5 out of 5 stars Living Gluten-Free for Dummies.......2007-06-17

This was the first book I read after being diagnosed with celiac disease. I am so glad I started with this one because Danna Korn's perspective is incredibly encouraging, entertaining, and informative. Some of the books that I have read since have scared me to death. Korn finds a way to give you the information you need and then point you to other resources. She does this without making her readers feel paranoid. Her enthusiasm and encouragement make you feel like going gluten-free is like going on a grand adventure. In reality, it certainly isn't always, but I found that her perspective really helped me in the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars dann korn is an angel in disguise.......2007-06-17

Writtn for a newly diagnosed celiac, she adds humor, science and practicality. If I had 2 books on my shelf they would be Living...and the Bible.

4 out of 5 stars Living Gluten-free for Dummies.......2007-06-08

The book was quite well written and complete except for the recipes. There should be more simple recipes that people use in ordinary meals. The book is for dummies!

5 out of 5 stars A Godsend.......2007-05-21

This book is a Godsend. It's as simple as that.

Danna Korn joins her readers by sharing personal accounts; she gives clear, well written definitions of celiac disease, wheat intolerance and gluten. There are 65 excellent recipes included that show just how possible it is to follow a gluten free lifestyle. Readers are also treated to tidbits of humor; gems of wisdom and a plethora of good information such as web sites as to where to shop for the wheat-intolerant/celiac regimen. It answers questions clearly and logically and readers come away with a good understanding of how they can live happily on a gluten free regimen. Many people with autism have shown marked improvement by following this regimin. Luke Jackson, the author of "A User Guide to the GF/CF Diet for Autism, Asperger Syndrome and AD/HD" A User Guide to the GF/CF Diet for Autism, Asperger Syndrome and AD/HD discusses how eliminating gluten and casein from his diet and those of his siblings improved their health and general performance.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is my Get Out of Jail Free Card and my Passport to a Healthier Life and a New Lifestyle. Hats off to Danna Korn!

5 out of 5 stars Gluten-free at it's very best!.......2007-05-21

Danna actually has lived the gluten free lifestyle since her young son was diagnosed with celiac disease over 15 years ago. This book is a must have for anyone who eats gluten free. I recommend this book to everyone who asks me about celiac and eating gluten free. Danna includes funny "I've been there" type stories that adds a significant amount of credibility and puts the reader at ease. Buy this book if you're not looking for the "doom and gloom" of the more medical-focused books and would rather be inspired about embracing the gluten free life. This book includes recipes, gluten-free friendly kitchen suggestions, shopping suggestions, raising happy and healthy gluten free kids and overcoming emotional obstacles.

Book Description

Shell scripting skills never go out of style. It's the shell that unlocks the real potential of Unix. Shell scripting is essential for Unix users and system administrators-a way to quickly harness and customize the full power of any Unix system. With shell scripts, you can combine the fundamental Unix text and file processing commands to crunch data and automate repetitive tasks. But beneath this simple promise lies a treacherous ocean of variations in Unix commands and standards. Classic Shell Scripting is written to help you reliably navigate these tricky waters. Writing shell scripts requires more than just a knowledge of the shell language, it also requires familiarity with the individual Unix programs: why each one is there, how to use them by themselves, and in combination with the other programs. The authors are intimately familiar with the tips and tricks that can be used to create excellent scripts, as well as the traps that can make your best effort a bad shell script. With Classic Shell Scripting you'll avoid hours of wasted effort. You'll learn not only write useful shell scripts, but how to do it properly and portably. The ability to program and customize the shell quickly, reliably, and portably to get the best out of any individual system is an important skill for anyone operating and maintaining Unix or Linux systems. Classic Shell Scripting gives you everything you need to master these essential skills.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn the basics.......2007-03-13

I've scrolled through lots of books, there is so much information out there, but this book has a tendency to keep it simple and to the point. It has good illustrative examples that not only are useful but also serve as a good practice guide.

5 out of 5 stars A good intro on Unix shell scripting and the problems it solves.......2007-02-16

The purpose of this handy little book is to help someone who is working with Unix through the labyrinth of tools available and learn how and when to use them. It is important to note what is mentioned in the preface - "Throughout this book, we use the term Unix to mean not only commercial variants of the original Unix system, such as Solaris, Mac OS X, and HP-UX, but also the freely available workalike systems, such as GNU/Linux and the various BSD systems: BSD/OS, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD." I quote the book because the word "Unix" is about as descriptive as the word "car". The intended audience is anyone who is computer literate, already knows how to program, and is regularly faced with diverse problems in the workplace that must be solved with Unix tools. This book should give you a taste of which tool to turn to and when.

This book can be divided basically into two halves. The first half is a tutorial on writing Unix scripts. The book starts with a brief history of the Unix language and the philosophy behind Unix tools. Slowly, each chapter builds up your skill at script writing. You are shown how to differentiate between shells, how to work with text extensively, how to use loops, pipelines, variables, and decision statements, and how to work with files. There are detailed example scripts at every step along the way. By the end of chapter seven, you should know enough about basic shell scripting to be dangerous.

Starting in chapter 8, you are showed more application-related information. First, Chapter 8 shows and discusses some ready-made scripts for some tasks for which there is no out-of-the-box Unix solution. Some of the handy solutions shown are for path searching and automating software builds. Chapter 9 is a crash course on awk, and is aptly named. It is just enough to be dangerous. You learn how to solve common text processing problems with awk, but you'll need more resources to be really knowledgable. Chapter 10 explains the usage of common commands for listing files, modifying their timestamps, creating temporary files, finding files in a directory hierarchy, applying commands to a list of files, determining the amount of filesystem space used, and comparing files. Next there are two applied chapters showing you how to merge several databases and how to perform spellchecking by using scripting. Chapter 13 changes the subject a bit and talks about the concept of processes in Unix and how you can use their statistics to accomplish a number of monitoring and control tasks. Chapter 14 talks about problems you may run into if you try to take advantage of shell-language extensions, while Chapter 15 addresses the issue of writing secure scripts to the extent it is possible to do so. Writing man pages, and the basics of the Unix filesystem are the subjects of the last two chapters of the book.

I would say it is a good modern introduction to the subject of shell scripting and Unix tools and how to use them. It doesn't dive deeply into any particular topic, but it will get you started by broadly introducing you to the problems most Unix script writers and system admins face regularly and how to get started solving those problems. I highly recommend it for that purpose.

4 out of 5 stars Nice overview of Bourne/sh scripting.......2006-11-17

This book provides a nice overview of the Bourne/sh shell's commands. I wish there were more examples with complete scripts. Korn shell users might want to consider "Korn Shell: Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Bash users might want to consider "Bash Shell: Essential Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Some of the examples in Randal K. Michael's "Mastering UNIX Shell Scripting" are also helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2006-03-12

I would say this is a pretty good book that covers it's subject very well, buti didn't use it much because i had also bought Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition, which covered the basics and differences between the shells briefly, which was all i needed at the time. but i looked through this and read some stuff that helped and it is a good book if you plan on doing extended shell scripting. it was just a little more than i actually needed

5 out of 5 stars Practical and useful .......2005-09-20

Great book. The emphasis is nicely split between actually using the shell itself and the whole supporting cast of unix tools (sed, awk, cut, join, sort etc.) The idea of carefully crafting solutions using the unix toolbox mindset is key. I also like the fact he doesn't try to teach to multiple shells, but first tries to emphasize portability by sticking mainly to a POSIX standard, and only later adds info about non standard shell topics. If I could only have one book on shell scripting, this would be it. The best description is 'Practical'.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good book.......2007-01-10

Good beginning and ending. Kind of lost me in the middle. A bit touchy, feelie.

5 out of 5 stars A good basic Introduction to TCM.......2006-11-10

For anyone looking for a basic, easy to understand introduction to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I can highly recommend this book. It focuses mainly of the five element theory of TCM, and it manages to explain a very complex concept in clear terms. It has nice self-test chapters to help the reader figure out their own predominant elements, and also offers good advice on simple herbal supplements and dietary advise based on the patterns.

However, it is very basic. If you are looking for more in-depth information on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or if you already have a basic understanding of the five elements, The Web that Has No Weaver is probably a better book to read, since it explains not only the five elements, but also the organ networks and their associated functions and spirits in much more depth.

I usually recommend Between Heaven and Earth to people who want to gain a basic understanding and introduction into the Chinese Taoist Philosophy that is the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I think it is a great introductory text, and will make subsequent, more complexly written books much easier to understand.

1 out of 5 stars The book is a mish mosh.......2006-09-06

It's too bad this book is a mish mosh and that neophytes in Chinese medicine are not going to know this. Some of the material is very standard and authentic, but a lot of it is the authors' own invention. So be careful with this. If you want the real deal, this is not the book you want. A better introduction to standard Chinese medicine is Kaptchuk's classic, The Web That Has No Weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Novice.......2005-10-04

I am a novice in the art of TCM and I do not speak or read chinese. This was an excellent guide for me in my studies in preparation to attend school for TCM and also how to get some practical benefit from my Chinese herbs. This was an Excellent Guide for the Novice.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the tenets of TCM.......2005-08-10

I recommend this book to all of my clients! With so much focus being placed on alternative therapies in health care, it staggers me that so much of the general public still thinks that acupuncture is for idiots acting as a human pincushion. While it is far from an instruction manual (which was never its intent), Between Heaven and Earth gives laypeople a simplified and elegant explanation of an ancient science. If you're looking for a definitive education in TCM, go to a university and get a degree. If you want an introduction to wellness through Chinese Medicine, read this book.

Book Description

The Korn shell is an interactive command and scripting language for accessing Unix® and other computer systems. As a complete and high-level programming language in itself, it's been a favorite since it was developed in the mid 1980s by David G. Korn at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Knowing how to use it is an essential skill for serious Unix users. Learning the Korn Shell shows you how to use the Korn shell as a user interface and as a programming environment. Writing applications is often easier and quicker with Korn than with other high-level languages. Because of this, the Korn shell is the most often used shell in commercial environments and among inexperienced users. There are two other widely used shells, the Bourne shell and the C shell. The Korn shell, or ksh, has the best features of both, plus many new features of its own. ksh can do much to enhance productivity and the quality of a user's work, both in interacting with the system, and in programming. The new version, ksh93, has the functionality of other scripting languages such as awk, icon, Perl, rexx, and tcl. Learning the Korn Shell is the key to gaining control of the Korn shell and becoming adept at using it as an interactive command and scripting language. Prior programming experience is not required in order to understand the chapters on basic shell programming. Readers will learn how to write many applications more easily and quickly than with other high-level languages. In addition, readers will also learn about Unix utilities and the way the Unix operating system works in general. The authors maintain that you shouldn't have to be an internals expert to use and program the shell effectively. The second edition covers all the features of the current version of the Korn shell, including many new features not in earlier versions of ksh93, making it the most up-to-date reference available on the Korn shell. It compares the current version of the Korn shell to several other Bourne-compatible shells, including several Unix emulation environments for MS-DOS and Windows. In addition, it describes how to download and build ksh93 from source code. A solid offering for many years, this newly revised title inherits a long tradition of trust among computer professionals who want to learn or refine an essential skill.

5 out of 5 stars Learning the Korn Shell (2nd Edition).......2007-01-28

I once was blind. Spending decades in the UNIX world I spent time with several shells. Down through the years I visited many shells and even bought a book on the Korn Shell by the designer David Korn. I sort of got complacent (know-it-all).

Now obtaining a position supporting AIX I once again find that the prefer supported shell is the Korn shell; even sh is linked to ksh93. Several times I came across unexplainable anomalies; sometime paths would be absolute and at other times they would follow links. Traps seemed to work a tad different and other outcomes seemed to be hit or miss.

The purchase of this book has been a real eye opener. What seemed to be arbitrary was in reality lack of personal knowledge of the latest version of the korn shell.

I could not believe that a book by David Korn of AT&T did not even mention signals.

Some of the highlights of the book are:
Job control
Functions
Command history
Command-line editing
Integrated programming features
Control structures
Debugging primitives
Regular expressions
Advanced I/O features
New options and variables
Increased speed
Security features
Major features
Security features
POSIX compliance
Arithmetic for loops
Floating-point arithmetic
Structured variable names
Indirect variable references
Associative arrays
Additional text manipulation facilities
More built-in commands

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-02

This book is just great. It has a lot of examples and every concept is well explained. Even for those who are not used to programming, this is a great book to start shell scripting.
The authors relate concepts (commands usage, for example) with those of bash and other shells, which is very helpful if you already know how to program with csh, Bourne, etc.
So... if you're looking for a GOOD book about ksh, buy this one!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Reference to KSH.......2005-11-22

I found this book very helpful in learning to write scripts for the Korn Shell. I keep it on my desk all the time now, even for other shells (Bash/etc). It's an invaluable reference to me.

5 out of 5 stars A must if you use KSH.......2004-11-30

While not as popular (at least in Linux circles) as bash, ksh is a powerful language/tool. Put bluntly, this is one of the few O'Reilly books I have read cover to cover. That isn't to say that the others don't warrant a thorough perusal, but that this book was readily accessible and provided excellent information. I have used it as a reference countless times over the years and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone using or considering using ksh. Moreover, if you are considering using ksh - or perhaps need a better background in Unix shell scripting - read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Straight to the top!.......2004-10-23

When I started my current position, I had little to no experience in scripting. After reading this book I have become the top scripter on our team. Now when tasks need to be automated, I've become the go-to-guy (not always good but at least it is a form of recognition). I have recommened this book to new memebers of my team. In fact, I think someone has my copy now. Hummm... who was it?

Based on a two-week course in woodworking fundamentals offered at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Camden, Maine, this book takes a traditional approach to teaching, with the idea that learning basic skills is essential to craftsmanship. In the process, the book covers all the bases, from working with hand tools to cutting dovetails. Over 250 color photos and drawings and two complete projects — a bench and a small cabinet — are included.

1 out of 5 stars Amazon hasn't shipped my order yet!.......2007-03-30

Amazon solicited my review of this book. I'd really like to provide a review, but as they've taken over a month to actually ship my book, and well, haven't actually shipped it yet I've had a bit of trouble getting into the text. I have high hopes that it's a good, informative, and thorough text. I'll only be able to find that out when Amazon finally decides to actually send it my way. Gosh it was silly of them to ask me what I thought when they know full well I haven't got the thing yet.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginner.......2007-02-10

I'm still fairly new to this, but I learned a great deal from this book about how to go about doing things the right way. I'm on my second read after attempting many of the different methods of joinery described. I recommend it to others just starting out!

3 out of 5 stars More of a project book.......2007-02-09

This book is basically a collection of projects, and then explanations of the various techniques used for each step. Good if you want to make an end table, but not that useful overall. A better book to learn all the different woodworking techniques would be The Complete Manual of Woodworking by Albert Jackson, et. al., which contains everything this does (explained and illustrated much better), and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent woodworking course.......2007-01-31

I have to say I agree entirely with Jason T. Amsden's review. A lot of woodworking books focus on one or two skills and just brush over the rest, so as a novice woodworker, you are left to figure things out for yourself.

While this book isn't as good as a live, hands-on course would be, it is the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Started.......2007-01-29

If you are looking to get started and pick up a general understanding of how to begin woodworking...this is a great book. I started out with essentially no knowledge of the subject...but I knew I wanted to get into it for several reasons. By the end I knew about the raw material, tools, terms, safety and how to get a basic project on track.
I ordered a second book on the subject, at the same time, (which will remain nameless), but it was difficult to follow and each page was too busy to follow easily.

4 out of 5 stars What a plethora of information!.......2007-04-20

Danna has taken what can be an overwhelming process and broken it into a seamless set of sections that have served me as a reference to my four year old's allergy needs. Korn gives a lay manner of understanding celiac sprue, wheat-free, gluten free and other issues that manifest from these special diets. She gives personal examples and guides the reader into being a positive person with an outlook towards family changes in order to keep everyone balanced.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opener.......2007-03-24

I thought I was buying a cookbook! This book does have many recipes in it but...Much to my suprise I bought this book and found out that I had Celiacs disease! I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and no one else knew either! This book explains allergy as well as the disease side of gluten. People with either will appreciate and benefit from this book tremendously! Thank you for the wake up call that changed my life!

4 out of 5 stars good for celiac.......2007-01-25

I have an interesting situation where I am allergic to gluten, corn, white potatoes...this book only addresses Wheat - and many of the alternative foods they suggest are corn and potatoes. So it is useful in the sense that if you only have wheat allergies then it's a great reference. If you have other stuff going on I wouldn't suggest it.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Fantastic resource for gluten free living!!.......2007-01-08

This book was an amazingly huge help when I first started my gluten-free diet. I wanted a book that would answer all the questions i had, and also the ones i didnt know i had! Danna Korn has written a very funny, yet extremely informative book that would help any person dealing with celiac disease, whether its them selves, or another family member or friend. There are recipes, and chapters dedicated to many subjects, many of which are questions likely on your mind, like how to dine out, what to do when traveling, what you can, or cant have, etc etc. This book is PERFECT for some one just starting out with gluten free living, who has no idea what they are doing. I wouldnt reccomend it particularly to those who have been on the diet for a while, as its just stuff you probably have already heard. but its good to have either way, because you can show, or lend it to ppl who have questions about your "eccentric" diet.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy one book on Celiac, this is it!.......2005-11-02

Thouroughly researched and up to date, this book is a wealth of information! Danna Korn talks about serious medical conditions without loosing her sense of humor. I have recently been diagnosed with Celiac, and this book is the greatest resource I've found thus far.

Book Description

How to apply statistical methods to survey data—a guide to effective analysis of health surveys.

With large health surveys becoming increasingly available for public use, researchers with little experience in survey methods are often faced with analyzing data from surveys to address scientific and programmatic questions. This practical book provides statistical techniques for use in survey analysis, making health surveys accessible to statisticians, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and health researchers. The authors clearly explain the theory and methods of survey analysis along with real-world applications. They draw on their work at the National Institutes of Health as well as up-to-date information from across the literature to present:
