WOW!!! WOW!!!.......2007-05-31
"The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur is simply a superb book. This book of poetry gave an insight to the intelligence and understanding that the late Tupac Shakur possessed. Most people who did not follow his music or know anything about him in general, like myself, would not think that Tupac Shakur would actually sit and write poetry that is meaningful or write about what is included in the world or in the government. But I was so wrong to think that way when I did not even know the man. This just goes to show that people should never under estimate others. "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" had me wanting more each and every time I turned a page. This book covers many subjects that will have an effect on you from the beginning to the end. I strongly recommend this book for others to read, because you will most definitely learn a thing or two from "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur. I would give this book 10 stars* if I could. Again, "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" is magnificent.
Tupac is alive.......2007-05-09
Tupac's book of poems is important in considering his life. My favorite poem is "a rose that grew out of concrete". Why, you may ask? Well, I'll tell you...it has a great metaphor about a rose and the way it is able to grow and flourish even in the worst conditions. The concrete represents Pac's experience in jail and regardless of being in jail he was able to grow as a poet. I highly recommend this book because I think especially young people growing up the way he did will be able to see the life lessons and morals he has to teach.
Beautiful Poetry.......2007-03-19
This book is so inspiring. I bought this book about 3 years ago and I read it at least once a month it's that good! I even got a tattoo that says "The rose that grew from concrete'. Definitely check this one out!!
Great condition.......2007-01-13
I bought this as a gift. It was brand new and my friend loved the book. Would definitely do business with this seller.
Beautiful Poetry.......2006-11-12
This book is filled with very beautiful, thoughtful, stirring poetry. A must for Tupac fans.
Book Description
Flaunt magazine declares LAbyrinth "absolutely impossible to put down" -- a book whose stunning discoveries are nonetheless "incredibly thorough and surprisingly credible." Acclaimed journalist Randall Sullivan follows Russell Poole, a highly decorated LAPD detective who in 1997 was called to investigate a controversial cop-on-cop shooting, and eventually discovered that the officer killed was tied to Marion "Suge" Knight's notorious gangsta-rap label, Death Row Records. During his investigation, Poole would come to realize that a growing cadre of black officers were allied not only with Death Row but with the murderous Bloods street gang. And incredibly, he began to uncover evidence that at least some of these "gangsta cops" may have been involved in the murders of rap superstars Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Still more shocking is what happened when Russell Poole became lead investigator in the murder of Notorious B.I.G.: as his shrewd detective work pointed to crooked cops such as David Mack, who orchestrated one of the biggest bank heists in Los Angeles history, Poole found his investigation stifled by a police chief wary of doing further damage to a department already sullied by the O. J. Simpson trial, the Rodney King beating, and the Rampart corruption scandal. Could it be that the Rampart scandal -- in which dozens of officers were implicated in a conspiracy of robbery, brutality, drug dealing, and false imprisonment -- was only a smokescreen for a far more damaging debacle? Igniting a firestorm of controversy in the music industry and the Los Angeles media, the hardcover publication of LAbyrinth helped to prompt two lawsuits against the LAPD (one brought by the widow and mother of Notorious B.I.G., the other by Poole himself) that may finally bring this story completely out of the shadows. Entertainment Weekly insists that "no single source presents so complete or damning a record" of this "compelling" epic tale of L.A. noir.
Customer Reviews:
Mindblowing Information.......2006-10-12
This book is one of the main reasons I could not bring myself to vote for former LAPD police chief Bernard Parks, in our most recent mayoral race. Seems we were so worried about more negative press in this city, we too often just looked the other way. One of the better documented works on the subject; the background info on L.A. street gangs, Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. are worth the cost alone. Will keep you glued to the pages.
Great book, very well-written.......2006-09-02
I recommend this book for several reasons. First off, it is extremely well-written. There's no rambling, it's very well researched, and the way the stories and facts are expressed are not dry at all. The writer, Randall Sullivan, writes for Rolling Stone magazine, so it's presented in that style. Even if you aren't interested in the Tupac/Biggie story, this book still goes deep into the origins of the Bloods and Crips, East coast and West coast rap feuds, and especially, just how corrupt the LAPD was(and probably still is). I've read other books on these subjects, including the recently released book by "hip-hop cop" Derrick Parker, but this book is by far the best. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Mindblowing!.......2004-07-21
If ur a fan of either tupac or biggie GET THIS BOOK .....russell poole blows the lid on how death row was really run. He explaines the level of corruption within the LAPD, and how and why the investigations into their murders remain unsloved. After reading this book, and watching the Nick Sullivan Biggie and Tupac dvd, its plain and obvious to all who was behind their murders!
Biased author, unsympathetic characters.......2003-08-28
As a fan of both Tupac and Biggie, I was very interested in learning more about what really went down. Former Officer Poole seems to think he has the answers so I was eager to learn what he knows draw my own conclusions. I was very disappointed.
First of all, to my absolute surprise, nobody else seems to have picked up on the author's extreme bias. For example, on page 14 of the hardcover version, Sullivan notes that "[In the early 1960s], as now, black males committed a hugely disproportionate amount of crime in Los Angeles and across the country." WHAT? I can't even believe that went to print. Question: do black males commit a disproportionate amount of crime in this country or are they accused and convicted disproportionately? At the very least, if you're gonna make such outrageous comments, back it up. With no statistical data, I consider Sullivan's comment to be hearsay. Then, just a few pages later, on page 18, Sullivan gets a little diatribe going about how the LAPD hiring process has become less stringent over time, noting that "liberals had successfully argued that [baring applicants with juvenile records] limited the number of blacks and Hispanics who could join the LAPD." I'm not even 20 pages into the book, and my reading of the author is that he really doesn't like minorities or "liberals," whatever the latter term means to him because he sure doesn't define anything. Yet I decided to take these and similar comments with a grain of salt and press forward with the book.
If one-tenth of what's written in these pages is true, Biggie and Tupac were just as despicible as Suge Knight, the LAPD, the affiliated gangs, the attorneys and just about everyone else who graced the pages of the book. And that made me really sad because it's hard for me to listen to the music the same way. Tupac and Biggie were not innocent; they were just greedy [...] who courted violence successfully. Truthfully, none of the stuff about the LAPD or any of the other authority figures surprised me. Money and testosterone--bad combination. Lest you think I'm a man-hater, the women in this book are appalling, too. I hate to say it but Tupac and Biggie got what they deserved.
I do think that Sullivan's style is extremely readable and engaging. I also like the way he attempted to provide background on the LAPD history, the history of the Crips and the Bloods, etc. If you're not likely to be critical going into this book, it's not bad for escapism. Unless you were living in a plastic bubble or don't keep up w/ current events, I doubt that you'll be blown away by the overall picture Sullivan paints.
Outstanding.......2003-07-26
An outstanding book. Very well researched and a methodical investigtion of the underworld that the rap music business has become. To the few people who thought that this book was a waste of time I can't imagine that you read the same book. There is so much evidence that the top brass of the LAPD covered up certain investigations that it is overwhelming.

Inside the heart of Tupac Amaru Shakur.......2007-04-13
Tupac Shakur was shot again on September 7th, 1996, but instead of recovering from his injuries this time, a week latter he died. In this book, "inside A Thug's Heart with original poems and letters by Tupac Shakur" you will explore the emotions, thoughts, feelings, and out looks Tupac has for Angela Ardis or `Ms. Lovely' as he calls her. When at work one late night, Angela and he co-workers are playing around. One of the co-workers asked, " If you could have a `ruffneck' who would it be?" Angela says she would pick Tupac. Everyone laughs at her choice; for at the time he was in jail and everyone also thought he was no good. So a bet was made that she couldn't get in touch with him. Well it just so happens she did. She sent him a letter that stood out from the rest, one that smelled and looked nice. Inside the letter she gave him her number so he would be able to call and a picture so he would know what she looked like. With in one day he replied to with a phone call and soon followed by a letter. Now they're writing to each other. In Tupac's letters he expresses himself in so many ways you never hear the media talk about before. He is forward and honest, plus he wrote wonderful poems. What you read in this book you would never expected from Tupac. You think by the way he raps and acts on T.V. and/or magazines is the way he acts 24-7, but its not. There's another side to him. In fact there are seven as he explains in one of his letters.
My favorite part of the book is each and every time you get to read his letters and poems. It's my favorite part because I get to see the other side of idol. I get to know more about Tupac then what the media portrays. Also get its my favorite part because when I was reading his poems and letters I could feel what was getting at. You get to take a look into a real thug's heart. To show you what mean, below is one of my favorite poems written by him called " 4 those nights when u r alone".
U ever share your love with a stranger
Only To realize he was a long lost friend?
Ever Talk 2 A Man like u talk with a woman
And share what you can't with other men?
Can u picture your love being given
2 A criminal stuck in this hell
Can u promise 2 hold off from Judging him
Until the day when you know him well
Can u close your eyes and imagine
If everything went Right
The power of passion finally possessed
After all those sleepless nights
I bet you think I'm gaming you
Just like all the men in your past
Cuz' all of them promised u heaven on Earth
But none of them seem 2 last
After All, What can I offer u?
Besides lonely nights & sweet words
Promises of pleasures 2 come
And lines you've already heard
All I, can say is have faith in me
And in Time maybe you'll come 2 c
The definition and true meaning
Of friendship can be discovered in me
In my opinion this book is one of my all-time favorites and I would most recommend it. I recommend it mostly to Tupac fans because you get to see that there is more to him then what you hear from the media. Also because when you read it, you feel as though you where there when it was written. So if your looking for a good book to read I would recommend you read this one.
A crucial historical document........2006-01-06
I feel blessed that we are able to have access to these letters between Ardis and the late Tupac A. Shakur, and I thank Afeni Shakur (the executor of her son's estate) for allowing Ms. Ardis to publish this correspondence.
Some folks will question the motivation behind releasing these letters, an understandable criticism in this age of vapid kiss-and-tell celebrity culture. What does Ardis stand to gain from this? Is she exploiting her relationship with Shakur solely for personal gain? Fair questions yes, but in light of the fact that Shakur is no longer with us, the only connections that we have to him are through the artifacts that he left behind: his music, films, and personal documents. Collecting and preserving these artifacts is important for understanding the context of Shakur's life, his profession, and the society that he lived in.
The historical significance of this correspondence between Ardis and Shakur cannot be overstated. Here, we are exposed to Tupac Shakur as a human being, away from the exploitive glare of the media spotlight, during what was perhaps the most difficult time of his life, when he was imprisoned in upstate New York for sexual abuse. Confined in a place where he had only himself and his thoughts, he is compelled to reach out to a fan who decided to send a letter to him on a dare. For those of us who think we know all there is to Mr. Shakur, the intimacy and vulnerability displayed in his letters to Ardis is a real eye-opener.
Readers see multiple sides of Pac: friendly, inquisitive, erotic, humorous, frustrated, angry, depressed, reflective, obstinate, and self-critical. He reveals himself to be what astute observers knew all along: a deeply intelligent, spiritual, and complex human being. His uninhibited communication style allows the dialogue between him and Ardis to develop fully, and these two strangers share passions and secrets that most people would conceal from close loved ones. From reading this book, I gained tremendous insight into this person who is no longer with us.
My one criticism of the book is the title. Obviously the publishers saw the marketing potential of the "thug's heart" reference, being that Shakur's public image is defined by this term. However, I do not nor have I ever believed that Tupac Amaru Shakur was a thug. This word was thrown around by Shakur, his record company, his fans, his detractors, and the media as both a term of praise and an epithet. It's loaded with so many contradictions, namely racism and hypermasculinity, and it's a label that too many young Black men are saddled with, for whatever reason. The fact that Shakur was a Black man killed in his youth makes calling him a "thug" even more egregious.
More than just a kiss-and-tell memoir, "Inside a Thug's Heart" is a strongly recommended resource for any serious student of hip-hop and American cultural history.
We LOVE you TUPAC!.......2005-12-20
I would like to thank Angela for allowing us (the readers) inside the intimate relationship that she shared with Tupac. With each letter I felt the sincerity of Tupac's words. Even though many reviewers felt she got played, I didn't feel that AT ALL! He was honest and upfront with her. Initially, she didn't set out to fall for him. BUT, who can blame her?? I was mushy after reading every letter. So many WISH they could have shared a little piece of Pac. Angela had more than a little piece of him... she had his mind. Who cares if it was temporary?
Angela, thank you sooo much for sharing.
Greatest Book In The World.......2005-10-27
This is one of the best books I've ever read in my life. Tupac is just one of the best artist. His life is so amazing. I am like In love with him!!!!! I love reading all his books and all the review's because they all speak the truth, they always have the best review's , well duh it's the best book to read!!!!!! I'm 1 in a million 14 year old girls that love him.
Inside a Thugs Heart.......2005-09-24
I agree with most of the other people that commented on this book, Angela was definitely played. I think the book would have been much better without all of her comments (fantasies.) It was nice to see another side of Tu Pac through his letters to her.

An Incredible Book for the True 2Pac fan!!.......2007-06-07
WOW, what a great book! This is a must-have book to add to your 2Pac collection, if you are a true die-hard fanatic, like me! The inserts and reproductions of Pac's handwritten poetry will give you chill bumps! This book shows all sides of the man most of us never got to know personally, unfortunately. He was a very compassionate, very caring and very intelligent young black man,,,and not just the hard-core thug rapper "persona" he portrayed. You will not regret purchasing this book.
THIS WAS SO NICE.......2007-05-14
THIS BOOK WAS SO WELL PUT TOGETHER THAT THEIR IS NOTHING ELSE TO SAY
It's worth it!.......2007-01-04
Alot of new material. Some never before (or anywhere else) facts in this book. The 1/1 scale copies of some of his poems, scripts, and Letters ect. were amazing to hold in your hand. It's not a boring read either, its put together well.
If I could go higher than 5 stars, I would.......2006-12-18
Words cannot explain how wonderful this book is. I bought it to put on my coffee table and I don't have the coffee table yet. I just couldn't wait!!! There are dozens of inserts. Some of them are handwritten poems and letters he wrote throughout his life. Pictures of him and his family growing up. There are flyers of events he took part in, his correctional facilty ID card and even his grocery list. It's unbelievable how well this book was put together. A must have for any Tupac fan.
Tupac: A Precious Side to Remember.......2006-09-20
This book is so incredible!!!Just to turn the pages brings awe and goosebumps. The life and times of Tupac are captured in his words on CD and in his writings which are so eloquently reproduced that you feel you are holding the actual paper that he wrote upon. The personal memorabilia scattered throughout the book bring him alive. The man in all of his complexity and compassion is revealed. This is a book to treasure.

The book was very interesting. I learned soooo much about the government and the prison industry. I did some searching independantly to check on the things reported in the book and they are very true. Great Read!! Buy the book.
A Must Read.......2007-05-25
Mr. Demico's book is a must-read for anyone concerned about young African American men. Although I did not agree with every conclusion he reached, Demico's main premises are convincing. As a white woman who teaches mainly students of color, I am always impressed, and often in awe, of those young men who reach college with so much going against them. Demico's books lays bare not only the horrible inequalities of our society, but also the racist attitudes of our political system - - Democrats, Republicans, and most everyone in between.
why are so many black men NOT in prison.......2007-05-17
THAT really is the question; think about it.
Why are so many Black Men in Prison?.......2007-05-13
I is a well put together book. He really goes into a lot of detail of how our society is really set up.
Why are so many blacks in prison?.......2007-05-12
I found this book very interesting. As a white devil myself, I had no idea that I was responsible for forcing blacks into committing crimes and then subsequently clogging up the whole "Prison Industrial Complex"(tm). I will try to stop causing this, as I am sure it is creating a LOT of trouble for everyone! Sorry!
It is probably also my fault that young black men dressed in XXXXL clothes overtly threaten me and my family members routinely. Can anyone tell me what I should do to make this not happen?
I imagine it's also my fault that black on white violent crime is WAY higher than white on black violent crime, even though blacks constitute about 12.5% of the population, and whites are about 70%. But since it is impossible for a black to commit a hate crime according to our criminal justice system (since blacks are not under any circumstances racist), statistically, there are more white on black hate crimes. Boothe notes a statistic regarding hate crimes, but he skips the one about interracial violence in general.
In sum, Boothe notes that just about everything blacks do is actually MY fault, because my skin is white. Boothe, I've got a word for you.
Introspection.

One of the greatest of all time.......2006-05-03
After listening to Tupac ever since I can remember and reading The Rose that Grew from Concrete, I just couldn't get enough information on this legend. The artist born Tupac Amaru Shakur was born in the East Harlem section of Manhattan in New York City. But his family moved around alot and eventually, when he was 17, he moved to Marin City, California. Tupac's 1st album, "2pacalypse Now," was highly contreversial and didn't have any chart toping hits. But Tupac persevered and came out with "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z." This album went gold and boasted some great tracks. But as Tupac's fame grew, attacks were sure to be made on him. On November 30, 1994, Tupac was shot 5 times in the Quad recording studios where the Notorious BIG was also recording. But Tupac had surgery and recovered. Tupac couldn't help but feel that Notorious BIG had something to do with it and a war between Notorious BIG and Tupac broke out. And on September 7, 1996, Tupac was shot 4 times in a drive-by shooting. Tupac stayed on life support for 6 days and died of cardiac arrest on September 13, 1996. And so died the 25-year-old lyracist and the world lost one of it's truly amazing occupants.

Tupac's Resurection.......2005-03-17
I'm a senior in an independent reading class. I enjoy action and adventure novels as well as mystery and non-fiction books. As you can tell this book is non fictional book that tells the life and tragedies of Tupac Amaru Shakur. This book gives all the information you need about the life Tupac led as well as followed.
This book begins with giving background information on his mother and what she did and accomplished in her earlier years as a Black Panther. Not only was his mother a powerful and strong Black Panther but so was his father. His mother, Afeni Shakur, not only was a powerful and strong leader, but was also a motivational speaker.
Tupac's childhood was both bad and good. He grew up poor with no money, always moving around from place to place, ghetto to ghetto. This was both good and bad because nobody in this world wants to be poor, but his experience in those situations made him a stronger person. As he grew up he had no confidence because he knew he had nothing important in his life. Confidence didn't come until he became famous as a rap artist. During his career Tupac also got into a lot of trouble that involved gangs, fights, drugs, and many other things that got him into either jail or the hospital. Those experiences gave him the knowledge to do what he does best which is to rap and share those experiences with others.
Overall, most of the things Tupac did or accomplished in his life were for the good. Although he did bad things at times and got into trouble, the things he did helped people do certain things that they do today which is why this is a good book to read. This book helped me understand things in a different perspective.

Everything about 2Pac is good. He was and is the best rapper and always will be and at least he didn't go out like a punk, if he even went out at all because it's real funny that after he supposedly got killed, by fat biggy's people, his next album came out and the first thing it said was "ya'll can't kill me."
Elvis ain't dead either. If you don't like it then stay away from everything 2 Pac.

Book Description
With a new preface by the author.
Ten years after his murder, Tupac Shakur is even more loved, contested, and celebrated than he was in life. His posthumously released albums, poetry, and motion pictures have catapulted him into the upper echelon of American cultural icons. In Holler If You Hear Me, "hip-hop intellectual" Michael Eric Dyson, acclaimed author of the bestselling Is Bill Cosby Right?, offers a wholly original way of looking at Tupac that will thrill those who already love the artist and enlighten those who want to understand him.
Customer Reviews:
Hip Hop can be intellectual .......2007-04-26
Micheal Dyson's book "Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur" was a pleasant and refreshing surprise. I purchased the book thinking it would be another biography of my favorite artist and I got so much more. It spoke to me intellectually as well as making me culturally aware of the issues and concerns of the black community yesterday, today, and tommorrow. I felt like this is the best book about Tupac out there today, not because it follows every step of his life, but because I got to take a look at him as a protagonist and an antagonist in urban socieity. I found out what books he read, what people thought of him outside of his culture, the influence he had on society outside of rap, and most importantly I figured out about his thought process and honesty. Michael even gives us an interesting perspective of Tupac as a child of a Black Panther, the last of the Shakurs'. This book is for anyone who is a real fan of Tupac and wants to see him from every angle possible.
Solid book on the fallen rap star.......2007-01-09
I must give props to Micheal Eric Dyson. He did a good job on this autobiography of this rebel of the underground. Michael Eric Dyson writes pretty good detailed accounts on Tupac's life without the being bias or partial(something a lot of these trash ragazines couldnt do to save their puny lives!). This son of a Black Panther was a lot deeper than these egocentric clowns you compare him to in the rap game. Tupac was giving you gems since his first magnum opus 2pacalypse Now. A lot of the rappers you compare him to still talk abou absolutely nothing. Its sad that there are still some childish jackals out there trying to desecrate the memory of this conscious poet. Even though he was a flawed character(like everybody else!) he was still giving you treasures like Part Time Mutha, Trapped, Violent, Keep Your Head Up, Point Tha Finga, Dear Mother etc and Micheal Eric Dyson notes this. I strongly recommend Holla If You Hear Me. REST IN PEACE TUPAC AMARU SHAKUR AND PEACE TO MICHAEL ERIC DYSON
Would have been a better book If he actually would have TALKED ABOUT TUPAC MORE!.......2006-01-31
Tupac Amaru Shakur may not have been Hip Hop's "best" rapper of all time, but he is hands down, without question, the greatest and most compelling Hip Hop FIGURE, of all time. what amazes me so much about Tupac is how he seems to represent so many different things to so many different people. Some people see Tupac as nothing more then a foul mouthed Thug who got what he deserved when he was killed. Other people see him as a Hip Hop Martyr/revolutionary who was on the verge of becoming a great leader, when he was killed. Then their are those who who don't think of Tupac as anything more then a dead rapper. While others see 2pac as not only the voice for his genre, but rather the voice for his generation. To me, the truth is, Tupac was/is probably a combination of all those things to some degree. He is and probably will always remain the only true ICON in rap.Like I said earlier, he wasn't the best rapper, he wasn't the best lyricist, he didn't have the best metaphors, he wasn't the best battle rapper, but it was just somthing about him, something about his charisma, someting about his passion, something about his emotion, something about his words, something about his voice, that just somehow seemed to separate him from everyone else.If their was one M.C. who deserved a book written about them and their life, Pac was clearly that person.
I gave this book 4 stars, but it really deserves about a 3.5 star rating. The book is supposed to be about Tupac, but Tupac only seems to be a vehicle for Michael Dyson to discuss Young Black Males as a whole. That's all fine and dandy, but I didn't buy this book for that.I bought this book to get insight on Tuapc, and in terms of that, this book dissapointed to a certain degree. But what really grabed me in this book was when they were talking about his experiance in prison. They talked about how he may or may not have been raped. To me, that was nothing more then what it was, a rumer. A lot of people don't know this, and something they should have added in the book, right before he went to prison and after he was shot 5 times, he was suicidal. In fact, at his house one day, his family caught him sitting in a living room with F**k the world written across his forehead and a 45 pistal he was pointing at his head. Now imagine, on top of everything else, how he would have reacted, if the most degrading, humiliating thing that could possibly happen to a man(or women for that matter), happened to him, on top of everything else.Ive digressed.
The bottom line is, this would have been a very enjoyible book, sans all of the big words as well as all the interviews with people who not only didn't know Tupac but in all likelihood, never even so much as seen or came in contact with the brother before(Stanly crouch,Kephra Burns,Mos def Talib Kweli, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Ray Jay, Sonia Sanchez,ect.).In fact, I really don't even know what buisiness they had even being put in this book(W/ all do respect to all of them). The book Title is called; "Searching For Tupac Shakur" not, "What people who never even knew Tupac Shakur think about him". If you want a real book on Tupac Shakur, and only Tupac Shakur, Then you should pick up Darrin Bastfields book on Tupac. This, buy no means,is a bad book however.
I must confess that I am only half way through the book.......2005-10-18
and so it may be unfair for me to give an opinion but sense i am a book worm, the kind that prides myself on reading a book in one day, I feel that I am experienced enough to pick up a certain sense of the author by the first chapter.
Now, in saying that, so far, from what I've read, I feel the authoer (Mr. Dyson) is trying to appeal to people outside of hip hop because it is as if he's saying that Tupac was more than a thug, or there was something very dynamic about his thug formula at the same time tragic (to say the least).
There's no doubt in my man that Tupac (r.i.p.) was an intelligent person to some level because of how he articulated his words and I knew he had some grass root flavor because the brother was straight up real in what he was saying (interviews, appearences) outside of his music. But I feel that Mr. Dyson is trying to tell the world (white world?) that Tupac was a very soulful and artistic person who was gotten trapped inside of his art that lead to a very tragic ending; that he (tupac had more to offer the world) before his early death.
I feel that who ever Mr. Dyson was trying to reach with his semi-autobiography of the slain star is very least insulting towards the average person's intelligence because history dictates that once a person is stuck with interest by a person, place or thing, that person will go out on their own to find out more information about the object of their attention (be it elderly white rock n' roll types, blues people, whoever) and in saying that, perhaps, this type of mindset is who Mr. Dyson was aiming at.
Another thing that bothers me about hip hop journalism in general is that in general, I don't know who were the true ideal reader that these books are meant for: are they for the true hip hopper or is it the true hippor and a more broader reading base (with high literary skills?) because whenever I read this types of books (3 so far) I need a thesaurus next to me. And I figure hip hop isn't about using big words, and so if one wants to write about the art form, they have to also think like the fan and not like themselves to make a core impact. Not that I'm saying this book hasn't made a good impact (look at the other reviews) but when one makes a comparison (and you should), I like Chuck D's book, "Fight the Power" because it's simple, down to earth, and honest. Infact, I was surprised how Chuck D honest approach throughout the whole book because he was humble and not egotistical or biased.
Anyway, read the book, like I'm continuing to do so and judge for yourself.
The metaphysic of Tupac Shakur .......2005-02-21
Here is an overview of some of the issues and ideas expressed by the Reverend Professor Dyson in this book about Tupac Shakur.
Tupac's mother was a Black Panther, who had served as her own lawyer to acquit herself out of a COINTELPRO frameup. For the most part, it seems from the mid-70's onward, her involvement with the Panthers, had blacklisted her from the mainstream. By the early 80's, she had developed a severe addiction to crack cocaine. But she nonetheless managed to cultivate in Tupac a precocious intellect. He became a very literate young fellow, interested in political issues, art, literature and the theater. Tupac's family moved to Baltimore in 1986 and there he entered a School of Arts where he excelled. According to Dyson, he organized Stop the Violence and AIDS awareness campaigns as a student. However his mother was getting more crazy and kicked Tupac out on the street. He ended up in Marin City CA outside of Oakland in the home of the wife of the then wrongfully imprisoned Geronimo Pratt. The Pratt home was apparently very broken. According to Dyson, Tupac had a great difficult fitting in upon arriving in Marin City. He didn't know how to play basketball, wrote poetry, dressed like a hippy, and was a target of gangs. According to the taped interview of Tupac at age 17, that Dyson quotes extensively from, Tupac complained that he was rejected by a girl on the ground that he was "too nice." Tupac in the tape declares that he will keep treating the girls right and maybe they won't fall for the bad boys anymore and turn to sensitive, decent fellows like him. Tupac fled the Pratt house, and ended up in an abandoned apartment with some of his friends. He got a job at a pizza parlor. He started selling drugs but apparently some street people dissuaded him from it. He had just turned seventeen, when he met Leila Steinberg, a lovely young white woman with an admixture of Jewish and Chicano ancestry. Steinberg conducted workshops in the inner city high schools in the area that allowed youth to engage in various artistic forms. Tupac moved in with her and her then husband, a black rap promoter and children. He became her assistant.
By the early 90's Tupac with Steinberg as reading partner, was consuming religious tracts of all the religions, such novelists as Alice Walker, Herman Meliville and William Styron, the poetry of Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou, books of investigative journalism, Nietzsche,W.E.B. Dubois. He read Eurocentric works and tried to discredit them. He also read Sigmund Freud to discredit him, according to Steinberg; he held the opinion that Freud was "a frustrated homosexual who never fully formulated his opinions."
Beyond the great intellect, Dyson writes, Tupac struggled with some mighty demons. His relationship with his mother had really wrecked havoc with him psychologically. Like a lot of ghetto youth, he had identity problems. He came of age in an era of the "white blacklash" and "white flight",of the deregulation that allowed the fleeing of working class manufacturing jobs to poor countries, of declining government subsidies. Meanwhile, more and more blacks were hoarded into prison on such principles of justice that places harsh justice on the consumer of crack but relatively light sentences on the predominantly wealthy white users of powder cocaine.
According to Dyson, Tupac defined thuggery in terms of someone who is trying to survive and be a man in a society that shuns and oppress them. Tupac made an acronym of thug life-"the hate you give little infants f-ks everyone." Dyson quotes Vijay Prashad on the interesting roots of the word "thug." It apparently is rooted in the Indian subcontinent and referred to brigands who robbed bullion cargos being looted by the British imperialists.
The thug life gives ghetto youth self-esteem and fellowship with other males. Tupac had similar motivations according to Dyson for entering the gangsta rap world with his second album. He tried to live that life to the fullest, getting drunk and high a lot. He lived life very recklessly, challenging god to bring death on him. In this flirting with death, Tupac expressed the psychological state of all too many ghetto residents, including chiliastic impulses, a deep down severe pain with life on this earth.
Dyson writes that most folks don't really consider Tupac really guilty of the offense for which he spent eleven months in prison. The woman claimed that Tupac had participated in a gang rape of her. He was only convicted of "forcibly" touching her buttocks. The prison experience damaged him. He might have been raped there. Dyson discusses sexism in the black community. He writes that the Million Man March sponsored by Farrakhan was an example of black men getting together to affirm that they going to live constructive lives.
Tupac's embrace of thuggery seems pretty silly to say the least. No doubt he was trying to make some money by cultivating the image, as the Notorious B.I.G. later claimed Tupac told him.
Dyson at times writes clearly and simply, even musically; much of the rest of the time, he writes in a rambling, gnarled, bookish style. There are times particularly in the last chapter, when he is almost unreadable. Nonetheless, he paints of moving picture of Tupac, who, in the true style of the poet, could evoke profound emotion with simple words and his vocal skills in his songs.

Book Description
"[Tupac] was more than just a black man or an American, he was prophetic," Gobi writes in the foreword to this celebration of the life and legend of Tupac Shakur.
Gobi, a fellow artist and friend, reflects on the last year of the hip-hop legend, recording artist, and actor's life in words and images. He takes us from the moment he met Tupac at his house in a water-gun fight to when he stood beside his deathbed in a Los Angeles hospital.
Tupac Shakur was charismatic in life, strikingly beautiful on film, and extraordinarily talented whether the medium was movies, music, or words on paper. With intimate photographs and poignant but light-hearted prose, Gobi has created a fascinating portrait revealing the hip-hop icon's many moods, his moments of introspection, and his humor. We see Shakur clowning around -- dressed up as Rick James. We see him as a lover. We see him with children, and as a mythical Egyptian king.

Thru My Eyes:Thoughts on Tupac Shakur in Pictues and Words.......2006-01-07
I bought this book just to see what this book was about. This book should never been printed! Who puts out of focus photos in a book, has his lawyer put a review on this website raving about it and then sells it?! It's a disgrace to photography of any sort. This guy is just making money off 2Pac fans and laughing his way to the bank. You can download better stuff on the web. His storytelling is not fluid or sincere. Anyone can add made up stories to pictures. It's a joke!!!
Intimate.......2005-12-02
I bought a copy and finished it by the end of the day; I didn't want to stop reading and
discovering more. I had no idea Gobi shared such an intimate
relationship with the fallen prince. I have the cds and Resurrection
and other documentaries, but, honestly, this book was the first work
that actually humanized 'Pac for me and painted him as a person. I
think it was the first person perspective of a close colleague of his
that made the piece very effective. I got choked up when Gobi
described visiting him in the hospital. Congratulations. Very nice
work.
insightful and engaging.......2005-11-02
I was given this book as a gift by a Tupac fan (I'm not a huge fan myself). However, as a music fan and someone who is interested in pop culture, I found the book to be engaging because of the descriptions that come with the photos. Gobi traveled with Tupac for a few years up to his death, and has great insight about this man who is deified by his fans. . . this book (Gobi is a huge fan himself) gives you some "under the surface" perspective about why people think so highly of Tupac. This book is as good as the Kurt Cobain "Letters" book. I would highly recommend to any music fan.

Book Description
The ever-controversial Shakur offers a great occasion for a close, passionate reading of rap and ghetto culture. White's understanding of Tupac's art will uncork the bottled up rage and confusion that attends the way hip-hop culture is produced and received. Rebel details each step in Shakur's development, from his early exposure to racism and political activism to his move from New York to the West Coast and his innovative work with early hip hop culture and music. Through connections drawn between Shakur and Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Sister Souljah, White examines Shakur's life as a prism for the hip-hop world. Photographs, a useful chronology of important dates in the life of Shakur, and an updated discography and filmography of his career as a rapper and actor are included.

the worst book ever!!!.......2003-02-01
this book was not well thought out. it was just an attempt to sound intelligent, but failed. the purpose of a book the should be to enlighten your readers not with big sounding words but with good ones that best describe the situation you are trying to get across. to me the book had nothing to do with tupac, it dealt with the author's lack of ability to put words together to form a sentence that could capture his audience. he just used the icon's name to sell his book, and true we fell for it, the true fans of tupac. we try so hard to grasp hold on anything and anyone that can give us more facts than we already have, so it pains me when people do things like this book which was so so so poorly written. i would hate to have a face to face conversation with him. PAC will always be in our hearts, thoughts and thanks to the real Gs he will be on our radios, TVs, VCRs & DVDs. as PAC would say, "NEVER IGNORANT GETTING GOALS ACCOMPLISHED."
Better Than Dyson, Great Tupac X-Ray.......2002-08-17
A great x-ray of Tupac and a much better book than Michael Eric Dyson's foolish cashing-in on a dead rapper's tattooed body. A lot of stupid stuff has been written by the VIBE and Village/Stone people who just want to make money off 'Pac. REBEL makes you understand Tupac's confusion and the analysis of the rap lyrics are the best I've ever read about a rap star. (The chapter on "Dear Mama" should be included in every school literature class.) I recommend this book to anybody who loves 'Pac and loves hiphop. When Dyson's stupid book goes the way of the dodo, REBEL will still be read. It's the most serious and amazing Tupac book anyone could want.

This is a man that should've e still been here and listening to his new ablum makes me think if he is still alive and if you are may GOD be with you and you with him in your deepest glory. Bury me as a "G" RIP I LOVE YOU TUPAC. L-Boogie, OKC
