a great snapshot into the grandparent/children relationship........1999-08-28
a perfect coffee table book or present.
"Grandparents. . ." is heartwarming.......1998-10-07
I was moved by this book. I happen to be one of the grandaughters featured in this book, and I hate to admit this, but I really wouldn't have picked it up, but since I was given a free copy, I read, and it made me appreciate the relationship between my grandfather and me. Now everyone that has picked it up, wants a copy. It really is touching.
Poignantly written, beautifully photographed stories of love.......1998-07-19
This is a delightfully written book filled with poignant reflections of love betweem grandparents and grandchildren. In just a page or two, Carol Abrams captures the essence of these relationships and the photography illuminates the stories. As a recent grandmother, I readily identify with the unconditional love these grandparents share with the reader and only hope that my grandaughter will bond with me in a similar fashion.
Beautifully presented book blending warmth & nostalgia........1998-06-18
I was so touched by "Grandparents & Grandchildren, Shared Memories" that I began sending a copy to each of my family members--then to friends who are grandparents. The recipients are all so delighted with this "treasure" that I thought I might share my idea with others. It's a beautifully presented book, blending warmth and nostalgia through engaging vignettes. Each charming chapter reassures us that what seems ordinary is potentially profound. Kudos to Carol Abrams & Ferne Margulies for a gem of a book!
The book lets you into the lives of the families selected.......1998-06-10
This wonderful book is not just another coffee table photography book. The stories behind the photographs explore the special relationships many grandparents share with their grandchildren. Some have made incredible sacrifices in stepping into the role of parent, when their own children failed to fill that role. The devotion is so heartwarming. Reading these stories makes one stop and cherish their own special relationships with family. It is a book I know I will look at over and over again.

Customer Reviews:
This book is a TEN!.......2007-06-14
Congratulations to these two ladies for putting together one of the BEST books on heartfelt photography that I have seen. It's definitely centered on family life and children, so if you're looking to shoot landscapes you might want to go elsewhere.
Their new take on the 5 S's of Compostion and 4 M's of lighting are well illustrated with images and precisely detailed with words. Easy to remember, too.
The only way you could not benefit from this book would be not to read it! It's beautifully laid out, so scrapbookers will be inspired and equally well photographed so photographer will love it also.
Thank you Donna and Allison! When is your next book coming out?
WONDERFUL!.......2007-04-22
I love, love, LOVE this book!! This is wonderfully inspirational! For me, it was the perfect balance of text (basic explanations and ideas) and photo examples by some extremely talented photographers.
This book is all about photographing people (the author says as much right in the introductory paragraph), so you won't find photos of inanimate objects or sweeping landscapes, but aren't scrapper's mainly about people anyway. It gave me a ton of ideas for future photos of my daughter.
I also love that that in the back of the book, it offered links to the websites of several of the photographers featured in the book - I checked them out - even MORE great inspiration!
Did I mention that I LOVE this book?
Awesome Book and I've met Allison too!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27
What an inspiration! If you are looking for a book on how to get GapAd photos of your kiddos and family and friends...this is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It rocks I love it, two thumbs up. Allison is a joy and this book is readable and EASY to understand for the novice photographer.
A must for any photographer!.......2007-03-09
Such a great book! I carry it with me and study it cause there are great tips for taking better pictures. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better photographer.
Awesome!.......2007-01-25

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for beginners and more.......2007-05-07
I purchased this book before I committed to a particular software and it was so helpful. I used it to practice with free trial copies of various softwares to help me decide which one I wanted to go with. The examples are great. The text is easy to follow and thorough. I am very satisfied with this book and learned everything I needed to get started and even do some advanced techniques!
Great Ideas, Needs updated for Photoshop Elements 4.0.......2006-07-04
I bought this book for a start in digital scrapbooking. It is great for teaching some of the basics, but I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and the latest it includes is 2.0. Quite a few of the operations have changed when trying to do such things at adding shadows and combining layers. Needless to say I had to buy another book for 4.0. This has some great ideas however and some good information on filters.
The one book to buy.......2006-01-09
This is it, the one book you need to learn digital scrapbooking. Sally gives you clear concise step-by-step instructions that will take you from the basics of digital scrapbooking to more advanced techniques.
Chapter by chapter you will build your skills. Then have fun with the CD full of digital scrapbooking supplies. Paint Shop Pro is a great digital scrapbooking program and Sally is definitely a GREAT Paint Shop Pro teacher!!
(Sally's other books are great as well.)
Digital Scrapbooking Step-By-Step.......2004-10-22
If you are thinking of making the move to digital scrapbooking you will do well to read this book by Sally Beacham and Lori J. Davis. Assuming that you have not committed to one image editor, the authors use five popular image editors in the examples throughout the book. They demonstrate the similarities and differences between Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Digital Image Pro, Serif Photo Plus and Ulead Photo Impact. But this book is not about imaging software. It is about digital scrapbooking.
The authors begin by discussing the pros and cons of digital scrapbooking and what you will need to get started. Besides showing how to make completely digital scrapbook pages, the authors also show many ways to integrate digital scrapbooking with traditional scrapbooking.
Next, they cover scanning photos into the computer and what can be done to correct and enhance your photos once they are in digital form. They discuss image corrections such as cropping, alignment, noise reduction, red eye removal and color correction.
The authors discuss two popular styles for scrapbook pages. The first style, faux-paper, emulates the textured paper, fibers, tags and other embellishments of traditional scrapbook pages. The second type, graphic design, has a more commercial look which emphasizes enhancement of photos and elaborate word art. They discuss how to use pre-designed layouts and how to design your own pages digitally.
Next, they begin to build a digital layout. They discuss color and how it should relate to and enhance your photos. Once you have chosen a color and texture for the background of your layout, you add your photos.
Text techniques and word art are a natural extension of digital scrapbooking. The authors discuss the importance of fonts and the digital effects that can be applied to the titles and journaling on your scrapbook pages.
There is a large section on plug-in filters and how they greatly expand the creativity of your image editing software. The special effects from these filters can be applied to your photos, digital background papers and embellishments.
The authors discuss how to save your digital page in the various formats for printing, burning to CD, emailing or posting on the web.
The accompanying CD contains several tutorials, clipart, over 100 fonts, trial versions of popular plug-in filters, sample layouts and page kits.
Lori J. Davis is a technical writer and author of many books on Paint Shop Pro. Sally Bracham is an author and teacher of Paint Shop Pro and related subjects.
An Awesome book for Digital Scrappers!.......2004-10-17
What an Amazing book! It's for everyone that keeps asking "when will we have a book for digital scrapbooking?" This is THE digital scrapping book to have. There is something for everyone from the beginner to the advanced digital scrapbooker. There are almost 300 pages packed full of information and color photos. An added bonus is a CD that includes Tutorials, Page Kits, Templates, and Alphabets. That's not all either, there are over 100 Fonts, Clip Art, free and shareware Plugins, and Sample Layouts that were featured in the book. It is not program specific and covers Digital Image Pro, Paint Shop Pro, Photo Impact, Photoshop Elements, and Photo Plus. I work at a large digital scrapping website, Digital Scrapbook Place, and will definitely be recommending this book to our members.
I am also using "Digital Scrapbooking" as a reference book and keep it on my desk. There is an index so it's easy to find whatever you're looking for quickly. I only wish this book had been available when I was struggling to learn how to digital scrap. Thank you Sally and Lori for an awesome book! It's obvious that a lot of thought went into this book to give digital scrappers exactly what they have been asking for.

This is a book provides new ideas for cropping to enhance your scrapbooks. The page descriptions are clear and easy to understand. This is a good book for the intermediate scrapbooker.
Another great buy.......2006-09-11
As always with these kinds of books - another great read and guide for scrapbookers!
Another great book from Memory Makers.......2006-02-15
This is a fabulous book. Great ideas and detailed instructions. It can be challenging and time consuming but the results are well worth the time and effort. I'd say this book is for those who want some new and fresh ideas and methods to their work. I highly recommnend this book to beginners and seasoned scrapbookers.
Wow, one of the best and most innovative books on scrapbooking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-23
I was very impressed by this book. Memory Makers have really outdone themselves with this one. I haven't seen in any other book the wonderful and creative ideas as in this one. I've learn all sorts of fun, new ways to make my photos exciting. And after all, isn't scrapbooking really about the photos. So many books emphesize on embellishments and other do dads but what about the photos ?!?! Now you can really make those pics that we spend so much time and money on perfecting to be the real spotlight. I admit that page layout designs and embellishments can really help bring out the best in your photos. Some may feel that some of the ideas in here are a little intricate and difficult, but most are achievable and with a little practice and patience (patience goes a long way), you'll have wonderfully cropped photos and beautiful scapbooks in no time. And I really think that it'll be worth it. Hope this was helpful to you.

THE FUTURE OF MEMORIES: SHARING MOMENTS WITH PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND DIGITAL CAMERAS is for anyone with a passion for digital photography and a willingness to learn Photoshop Elements. Acknowledging that great images don't necessarily equal to great stories. Dane Howard uses his years of professional experience to show how new technology can bring these photos to life. It's the story which should dictate the process, not the image: THE FUTURE OF MEMORIES tells how to pair both, how to organize images to tell the tale, set up shots, and more. Examples and coverage of all modern photo-sharing media, from photoblogs to mobile devices, set FUTURE OF MEMORIES apart from others.

This gracefully written narrative weaves together impressions, memories, and analysis, negotiating history in a thoroughly original way, and moving deftly from photographic memories of the American Civil War and the Cold War to the iconic images of September 11.

BUYER BEWARE.......2002-07-06
If you're considering buying this book, don't. Doing a quick web search of the author's name, I found the e-text of a complaint which the Federal Trade Commission brought against Dane Spotts for false advertising. Many of his other products, such as quick fat-burning pills and and quick mind enhancers, were in the complaint. Particularly of note is the complaint that his company has not, in the past, honored its 30 day money back guarantee. Spotts' products seem to be little more than present day snake oil: dangerously false get-rich-quick schemes trying to capitalize on current fads and the general public's ignorance with no concern for product effectiveness or the buyer's safety and well-being. Dane Spotts needs to put out of business, as he obviously is a career charlatan. He has made his money playing upon people's insecurities and weaknesses. Don't let him do the same to you.
remember this one...........2002-01-03
$..and it contains what is covered in a paperback for less ... elsewhere. A CD with Baroque music is just to give it the 'whizz-bang' feel. More marketing than depth. Look for O'brien, Hancock etc or, for the good ol' days go for Harry Lorayne - one the very early popularisers and it has all the content of this for under half the price.
Photographic mind not photographic recall.......2001-12-12
First, I would like to comment on this particular book. Then I will comment on the Brain Supercharger CD contained with this book.
The book Photographic Mind: Holographic Memory System, is almost entirely based on mnemonics for memory improvement. As the title of the book is deceptive, as there is an explanation of this is contained inside. Dane Spotts states "The Photographic Mind applies traditional time-honored memory systems with a new holistic approach based on the latest scientific findings that support the existence of not only an intellectual memory (of your left brain and right brain) but an emotional memory (of your body) as well."
These time-honored memory systems are merely mnemonics. Dane Spotts does a fine job with some of the mnemonic systems provided. He does offer a fresh new look into them, also how to practice them. I wish to comment on them further, although briefly.
Dane Spotts goes through the link system, loci, peg, and the phonetic system for memory improvement. If readers have read other memory books, they will recognize these memory systems. Let us not fool ourselves here, they work very well. Although, Dane uses the classic phonetic system for memorizing numbers. This method of memorizing numbers is archaic and outdated. I would like to refer anyone to my previously reviewed books such as The Memory Pack of Andi Bell or any of Dominic O'Brien's fabulous memory books (true memory champions). However, Dane Spotts shows good and novel ways in becoming acquainted with the loci, peg, or the link system for memorization. His methods work well. In the mnemonic sections, Dane Spotts does an adequate job in using loci, peg, and the link.
Furthermore, a rather presumptuous statement from Dane: "There is a difference between a true photographic memory and the photographic mind you will be developing through the workshops of this book. A photographic mind is much more powerful than a photographic memory-a phenomenon which psychologists call "eidetic imagery."
I would be very ecstatic to witness the proof of this statement. My personal statement is that one cannot fully quantify memory or its functions, or even to the extent of pure photographic memory, we have not the capabilities. A powerful form of photographic memory, photographic recall, as well as eidetic memory, is proven to exist, check literature or hypnosis studies! At this point, we are just throwing rocks, and I will be happy to give in.
I was a little worried because of Dane's subchapter entitled "The Double Curse of Rote Memorization" pg. 36
He does not give much attention to rote memory and its important uses. His point is well deserved of using better techniques such as visualization and emotion. If one were to read Memory Search by a Memorist by Charles Thompson, one would understand rote memory and its importance. Also check Kenneth Higbee's book "Your Memory How it Works and How to Improve it."
This book does read of lecture material with very little references. No index or reference section or chapter notes.
I could have picked this book to pieces in light of the heresy information contained within. Nonetheless, there are good sound applications in this book.
In my view Dane Spotts, photographic mind is simply: high visualization with well practiced mnemonic techniques. Let us not confuse ourselves here, Dane Spotts Supercharged Brain CD is novel and useful. He briefly mentions "Georgi Lozanov." In the book, "Georgi Lozanov" is misspelled as "Georgi Lasonov" the popular Bulgarian scientist located in the books Supermemory, or Superlearning, or Superlearning 2000. He briefly comments on Georgi's work with learning improvement because this is the basis of track number two on his Brain Supercharger CD.
The Brain Supercharger CD included with this book contains three tracks. Track number one is an explanation -by Dane Spotts- of the other two tracks on this CD.
Track number two on this CD is the Accelerated Learning Music. I find this track pleasurable and useful. If anyone has listened to classical 40-60 beat music while studying, one will enjoy this track. A great addition to the CD.
Track number three is the Super Memory Transformation track. On this track there is "Brain Supercharger Technology" which is simply is 3-D sound recording and what is called Neuro-Entrainment Matrix, which is very simply, sounds and tones for brain synchronization or entrainment. In addition, there are affirmations contained on this track. These affirmations are to enforce learning and memory.
I am very impressed with the Super Memory Transformation track. This track is very relaxing, with a blend of running water and deep background base sound one feels relaxed in a short period of time. At this time, I have limited use of the CD but the results thus far are very encouraging.
In conclusion, there is much more I could articulate. I did leave some minor points, but the major details are worked out above. For memory books I recommend "Awaken the Genius by Patrick Porter" or my previously reviewed books. Nevertheless, there is some good reading here and I do recommend this book as a later choice for a memory book.
Photographic Mind.......2000-05-12
The title of this book may be a little misleading. If your goal is to attain perfect photographic recall, then you are looking at the wrong book.
However, if your goal is to improve your memory, this book is an excellent choice. The exercises in the book are superb. They lead you very methodically through the usage of the link system, the loci system, the peg system, and the phonetic system. What sets the book apart is the quality of the exercises. You are carefully guided through the entire process with real examples.
I have not decided whether the CD that is provided is helpful or not. There are two basic tracks. The first is baroque music for enhanced learning. It did provide a nice background while reading through the exercise. The second track is reported to help seal the learning into your brain. I used the track after each exercise but did not use it every day for the recommended 60 days. You be the judge.

Book Description
Many of William Claxton's photographs of American jazz musicians have become the iconic images by which we remember them--a young Chet Baker lying on his back in the studio, trumpet in hand; Bill Evans and Ray Charles at their pianos; a sparkling Sarah Vaughan; a somber Miles Davis; and countless more. Less well known is the fact that since the early 1950s, Claxton has also photographed scores of actors, directors, writers, artists, singers, and entertainers from outside the world of jazz. Photographic Memory, his first-ever monograph of these images, features more than 100 such wonderful and revealing portraits, only a handful of which have ever been seen before. Anecdotal stories by Claxton accompanying the images reveal the intimate and first-name basis with which he photographed the well-known icons of celebrity, wit, and style from the past five decades, many of them his dear personal friends. Here for the first time Claxton describes a backstage photo session with Marlene Dietrich; antique shopping with Gloria Swanson; unwittingly provoking Shirley MacLaine into a bawdy comment on a tense, crowded, film set love scene; and many other unforgettable moments. A stunningly intimate document of our most-loved film and entertainment icons, Claxton's Photographic Memory is sure to become an instant pop-culture heirloom.
