Book Description
This stunning volume focuses on the qualities of the old things in our homes (the patina of an old table, pewter dulled by age, old floorboards that creak) and how to live with and incorporate them into our personal aesthetic. Divided into chapters by the qualities of old—peeling, dried, tarnished, faded, chipped, frayed, rusty, and mossy—this unique book not only pays tribute to furniture, textiles, china, silver and other accessories with these qualities but also shows us how best to preserve, adapt, and arrange them. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs that highlight the warm colors and rich textures of wood and paint, cloth and leather, For the Love of Old also includes ideas and recipes for saving old items from the junk pile, preserving and caring for the old things you have, giving newer things a lived-in feel, and bringing an enduring personality to every home.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-02-07
I loved Mary Randolph Carter's book American Family Style so much and this book seemed to me like a part two of that original book. Although this book wasn't filled with pictures of her family it was filled with the same warmth and comfort as the original. Even though it may not be filled with exactly the things I might put in my own home it is something I enjoy reading. You can tell the author truly LOVES these lost, rusty, beautiful things. I truly can appreciate that.
Love It or Hate It - I Loved It.......2007-02-01
Many, indeed virtually all, of the books we see on interior decorating show rooms set with furnishings that are either brand new or antiques that are pristine and beautiful. They are a very, very long way from those long ago college days when glasses came from empty jelly jars and none of the plates or silverware matched.
Ms. Carter's book is a celebration of the old, the frayed, etc. The individual table settings don't have to be all alike. They just need to be interesting, attractive, have a story to tell. I particularly liked her comments regarding silver, probably because I've gotten a lot of it from my mother and grandmother.
Ms. Carter has an artistic eye that sees art where other people see junk. She matches her eye with her photographic skills that enable her to show exactly what she means. It's a book to be celebrated by those of us who like garage sales, thrift shops and making that special find.
FOR THE LOVE OF OLD: LIVING WITH CHIPPED, FRAYED, TARNISHED, FADED, TATTERED, WORN , AND WEATHERED THINGS THAT BRING COMFORT..........2007-01-10
AN AWESOME, INSPIRING, AND COMFORTING BOOK FOR THOSE WHO LOVE THE OLD AND ECLECTIC LIFESTYLE. SIMPLY WRITTEN AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOS FIT FOR FRAMING. A GREAT RAINY DAY READ AND SUITABLE FOR THE COFFEE TABLE.
Not her best..........2007-01-09
I love her other books, I was so looking forward to reading this one over a long afternoon. I fell hook, line and sinker for her romance with flea markets and flea market treasures. This one looks like she took the leavings off the cutting room floor from her other books, packaged it nicely and called it good. Except it is not, good that is. Sorry but this stuff just looks like junk that I would not give a second glance to at a yard sale or flea market. And the price is so high!! Mutton done up as lamb.
Yikes!.......2007-01-09
This book would be more aptly titled "For the Love of Junk" -- old things are wonderful, but they don't need to be broken, peeling, dusty or creepy!!

Great stuff.......2007-02-07
Many of the projects are pretty advanced, but there are some great ideas, and I always appreciate craft books that have sections on materials and step-by step instructions.
Exciting crafts ideas to use your 'stash' of photos.......2007-01-19
This book has some GREAT ideas for using those stored photographs! We've already gone through several boxes and made a really cool lampshade; a collage; and jewelry! The book has creative gift ideas, which will be cherished by the recipient. Fun projects for the whole family!
A Comprehensive List of Things to Do with Photos.......2006-05-02
Photocraft features fresh, inventive ways to display your photographs. I was inundated with photo storage boxes and was seeking a creative way to display cherished images when a friend gave me this book. Most of the projects are relatively simple and are accompanied with easy to follow instructions. I needed a quick fix wall treatment in my entranceway and borrowed an idea from page 100: using old CD cases, I created my own rotating photo gallery (FYI: I found that poster tabs keep the light weight plastic in place).
I've found this book to be an invaluable resource for both displaying photos and making personalized gifts.
Scattered Pictures.......2005-12-03
What a wonderful addition to my burgeoning craft-book library! This book is visually engaging and can serve as a creative inspiration to novice crafters and seasoned ones alike. 'Photocraft' engages the imagination while providing practical instruction as to how to manipulate all types of images artisically. A great find!

Facing a new home or upcoming remodel? Ah, a blank canvas that you can paint to reflect your singular personality and unique tastes. But what if you're not exactly sure what your tastes are? Yes/No Design will help you recognize your aesthetic attitudes and sensibilities.
An interior decorator and artist, author Diane Love understands that your home is your castle and that any castle's decor should jive with the personality of the reigning monarch. Using a list of adjectives, you evaluate your emotional reactions to a series of photographs. Be honest and you'll discover your true decorating sense (you do have one, no matter how buried it is), and there's no right or wrong. For example, I find the book-lined library cozy, comfortable, and unpretentious. You may think it's dark, cluttered, and predictable. We're both right! Through a series of exercises, you'll discover your decorating likes and dislikes. Do you prefer sophisticated and ornate? Casual and bohemian? Read about furniture styles, color combinations, and architecture, and then listen to your intuition--you'll be on your way to creating a personal space unique to you. Included are two workbooks (one portable) so you can jot down notes and ideas. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
Acclaimed designer and artist Diane Love shows you how, in this beautifully photographed volume, to discover and define your personal taste, then demonstrates how to build a decor that is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and truly reflective of your personality.
Within the pages of this beautifully photographed book, acclaimed designer and artist Diane Love presents a truly innovative approach to interior design by equipping you with an understanding of your unique taste and the ability to use it to create your personal decorating style. Through easy, fully illustrated, step-by-step exercises and examples, she helps you to discover and define your taste, then demonstrates how you can use this knowledge to create a functional and aesthetic decor that is a true reflection of your personality.
PART I: WHAT IS YOUR TASTE? Seven exercises, comprised of simple activities and questions, and free of self-conscious personal evaluation, help you to better define and articulate your taste. The exercises begin by asking you to select from magazines rooms that you love (your YESs) and those you don't (your NOs), then they help you to find words to express your impressions about a room's decoration, to distinguish the common denominators always present in the rooms you choose, and to pinpoint your likes and dislikes through your reactions to elements of a room's design, from architectural elements to furnishings to the color palette.
PART II: EXERCISE YOUR TASTE Eleven methods taken in sequence explain the step-by-step process of decorating a room and show you how to incorporate what you have learned about your taste in Part I in order to create a decor that is comfortable and aesthetically pleasing to you. Topics covered include: using space efficiently, evaluating architectural elements, renovating economically, making a furniture plan, achieving visual balance, arranging objects and pictures, choosing lighting, and working with mirrors.
QUESTIONNAIRE AND WORKBOOKS A questionnaire specially conceived to assist you in analyzing your decorating style enables you to track your aesthetic attitudes, reactions, and preferences. The two workbooks-one of which is separate from the book and easily portable.

Intuitive & Personal.......2004-02-21
A wonderful resource and a delightful read, Yes/No Design is an unique combination of tasteful "how-to", interior design consultant, and chic best friend. Through a series of pictorial and descriptive examples and thoughtful exercises, the author encourages the reader to recognize her own taste and to trust her own sense of style. The lessons learned and new awareness are meaningful and applicable in all areas --from interior design to personal styling. Yes/No Design is a book you'll want on your bedside table as well as on your coffee table. A great gift!
The journey home........2003-02-12
Not only is this book intelligent, but it calls on the reader to find her own creativity. So often we are told what to like and where to buy it. While these things can be helpful, if what you really want is to express yourself in your surroundings, then Yes/No Design will lead you within to uncover and create.
Living in a consumer culture, it is easy to get out of touch with our own expressive sides, and I really like how Ms. Love encourages us to take that journey back to our most original selves. If you are willing to complete the exercises and look at them as a whole, what you can find is nothing short of your self.
I think Yes/No Design is a text on how to distill out the essence of design as an act of personal creation. Rather than paying Ms. Love to tell us what to like, we are gaining something far more valuable with the purchase of this book -- a guide to our own creativity which we can then use to decorate our homes and every other area of our lives.
most useful to novices.......2002-12-17
Unlike some of the other people who reviewed this book, I did not find the quiz to be helpful. However, the benefit of the quiz may depend upon how knowledgeable you are about interior decoration and/or how fixed you are in a particular style. The reviewers who seemed to be helped the most were novices. That is why I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1. On the other hand, I think the basic tips provided by this book have been covered better in other books, and the pictures are only so-so.
At one point the author says "listen to your intuition." That is what I suggest people do instead of buying this book.
However, if you don't yet trust yout intuition the following are some good books:
Color Your Home Beautiful: Ideas and Solutions
- It has beautiful photos, a variety of well-chosen color combinations in a variety of styles, dozens of color swatches, useful tips, and quotes from designers.
Ultimate Home Style Guide by Katherine Sorrell
- Almost all styles are represented here with enough details on colors, fabrics, and other style elements to create the look your self.
Better Homes & Gardens: New Remodeling Book
- Despite the fact that remodeling is in the title, this is a good basic book about interior design. I like it better than BH&G: New Decorating Book.
Beauty Comes From Within.......2002-01-22
Diane Love's "Yes/No Design" is a joy. It's a gift that I gave myself not knowing the profound effect it would have upon me.
Having had little or no faith in my aesthetic sense, "Yes/No Design" helped me trust my choices through the simple understanding of my likes and dislikes (for things such as colors, sizes, shapes, space, and patterns). The book is beautiful, thought-provoking, validating and inspiring. I realized I don't have to be an "expert" to create a lovely home.
"Yes/No Design" helped me get in touch with who I am, what I enjoy and appreciate, and what makes me comfortable. For me, decorating my home has become a metaphor for changing and improving my life and my attitude. Diane Love has shown me that beauty most definitely comes from within.
Decorating with confidence.......2001-04-12
After hearing Diane Love speak about her book at a book signing in San Francisco, I purchased one for each of my married daughters (3). This lovely volume offers guidance and information that allows the reader to better understand and trust his/her own taste. I can't think of a better gift for my girls.

How to Really Improve Relationships.......2001-09-17
This book is an ingenious gift from the author. The secrets shared here have helped any number of lives, some of whom I know personally. Simons literally reverse-engineers ancient four pillar feng shui to make some of its most profound insights available to westerners. He approaches relationships not on the perfunctory level often prescribed by the latest fad book, but on the soul level where all of our relationship outcomes are ultimately determined.
This book is a TRUE how-to for relationship enhancement. It invokes feng shui in the way it is meant to be used, to enhance rather than substitute for self-knowledge. What a fantastic opportunity this book provides those who seriously want to improve the world through relationships and feng shui.
And it's not difficult! Simons' brilliance is that the complex Taoist calculations and philosophies are rendered here in common-sense terms that are accessible to and effective for all. Be prepared for a wonderful journey with this book.

Book Description
In this lavishly illustrated volume, Christine Churchill establishes the definition of the new American collectible and shows how -- by using a discerning eye and armed with basic know-how -- talented individuals and seasoned collectors can create their own signature design aesthetic and apply it to their homes and their lives.
American vintage style has evolved and changed. Gone are the old-style American antiques: Chippendale highboys stuffed with precious "smalls" in museum-perfect homes. Today, interesting and unique homes showcase character-filled objects; old number signs with bright graphics; weathered finials; funereal vases; mercury glass collections. The Collector's Eye shows that the best rooms are not the result of excessive spending and "decoration" but are a reflection of how the owner's passions and ideas can result in a collection that is both deeply personal and valuable.
By examining individual collections that range in aesthetic from folksy arts and crafts to urban modern, Churchill offers a wealth of ideas and information for all budding collectors and enthusiasts. Complete with informative sidebars and detailed caption photos, The Collector's Eye describes the intricacies of these objects, imparts tips on sleuthing for them, offers practical advice on their placement and upkeep, and guides readers on today's hot collectibles and how to go about building their own special collection.
Customer Reviews:
soothing .......2004-08-23
I have a very mixed reaction to this book. There are some very lovely rooms and objects, but for the most part there is nothing out of the ordinary here (with the exception of marvelous ironwork fence bits). Some interiors could be swapped out from one house to another without jarring the eye. Too much designer influence and not enough passion and eccentricity.
Luscious photos, unique collections.......2004-04-22
I'm a bit biased since our home is featured in the book, but Christine has put together a great design source that focuses on unusual collections. The photos by her husband are luscious and artistic, putting all the objects in their most glamourous light. Her sense of style and design comes through in the way she grouped items and focused the collections, and the text is thoughtful and tells some interesting stories. If you're the type who likes flea markets and antiquing for the unusual find, this book is a must. If you're contemplating starting a collection, you need this too. If you're a designer stuck in a rut of programmed newness, this book will help loosen your style and inspire you.
