Book Description
DO YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT YOU DO BEST EVERY DAY?
Chances are, you don't. All too often, our natural talents go untapped. From the cradle to the cubicle, we devote more time to fixing our shortcomings than to developing our strengths.
To help people uncover their talents, Gallup introduced the first version of its online assessment, StrengthsFinder, in the 2001 management book Now, Discover Your Strengths. The book spent more than five years on the bestseller lists and ignited a global conversation, while StrengthsFinder helped millions to discover their top five talents.
In its latest national bestseller, StrengthsFinder 2.0, Gallup unveils the new and improved version of its popular assessment, language of 34 themes, and much more (see below for details). While you can read this book in one sitting, you'll use it as a reference for decades.
Loaded with hundreds of strategies for applying your strengths, this new book and accompanying website will change the way you look at yourself -- and the world around you -- forever.
AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY IN THE NEW & UPGRADED EDITION OF STRENGTHSFINDER 2.0

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Assessment Tool.......2007-06-28
I have used this with clients and have been impressed with how consistently on-target the assessment is. Rather than focusing on weaknesses to improve, the premise of the assessment is that one can be far more effective by recognizing their strengths and building on them. Most recently, I purchased a bulk amount of the books to issue to a client group of 12 people. (You have to purchase the book to get the "secret online code.") The group learned not only what their own strengths were (some initial surprises as the respondents had never considered some of the strengths before) but how the traits of other team members complemented the team. The individual reports generated include an action plan to build on your strengths. All in all, a good and deservedly popular tool.
Confirmed my suspicions.......2007-06-27
I bought this product at the suggestion of a counselor and found that it was somewhat insightful. It confirmed what I suspected about myself (...after perusing the themes previously...).
How much can one read into this type of examination? Not sure...but I will say that a recent job inquiry provoked a very similar online examination through an independent agency. This type of book + examination might be the next thing in HR.
Awesome work place team building tool........2007-06-27
We have recently used this book to engage employees in searching for their hidden strengths. We have found it an invaluable tool in improving employee performance and productivity. Give it a try!
Good Team Building Exercise.......2007-06-26
We used this book as a team building activity at our annual offsite planning session. It was valuable and reasonably accurate and helped to guide people on the team to a better understanding of the personalities within the group. It would be better if it ranked all 34 themes in the report so that you also knew where you were not strong.
What are your strenghths?.......2007-06-24
I have taken the strenghthsfiner test 3 times, and it has been consistant throughout every test. If you want to learn how to maximize on your strenghths vs. worry about your weaknesses, this is the best investment you can make. The book allows you take the test online, and learn how to use your strenghths to your advantage in all aspects of your life. A must do, in my opinion.

Book Description
Have you ever wondered why some relationships are wonderful and others are just catastrophic and tragic? Why do we get along with some people and with others just seem to constantly engage in bitter fighting? In this fascinating and helpful book, internationally renowned psychic
Sylvia Browne examines why we form our relationships with certain individuals . . . for better or for worse. From the lifelong connection of a loving marriage to the short and bitter agony of a brief encounter leading to divorce and heartache, she reveals why we have joyful and happy relationships on the one hand and chaotic, hateful and painful ones on the other.
Sylvia takes us on a remarkable excursion that covers all the different types of relationships we’ll encounter in life. From our childhood experiences to our golden years, she helps us see why we form both good and bad unions, and she also explores how our themes and charts of life can interact with others in both positive and negative ways—creating either lifelong love or friendship or a situation doomed for disaster. Sylvia enables us to come to a true understanding of why we have certain compulsions and attractions for some people while being totally repulsed by others. By utilizing Sylvia’s marvelous insights, we can all learn how to cultivate our relationships (and sift the wheat from the chaff) in order to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
Customer Reviews:
Can't get enough of her books.......2007-06-10
I loved this book as all of Sylvia's books that I have read so far and cannot get enough! Why? Because everything she says feels natural to me and I love the way she writes in a matter of fact style that makes you feel like she is in the room with you. For years I took on the beliefs of Modern Day Christianity which did nothing but depress me and felt strangled, but now I feel free for the first time in 56 years on this earth. Granted there is nothing wrong with Christianity per se it is more what man has done to it. Thanks Sylvia for helping to set me free.
Very Enlightening.......2007-06-01
I have always enjoyed Sylvia Browne's books and this is no exception! A fantastic book to reflect on to get a persepective on all levels of relationships. If people are willing to take the time to incorporate what she says, it definitely will build better relationships with everyone in their lives!!
I give it 5........2007-05-31
I love reading Sylvia's books. She writes in a way that keeps me interested. This book really makes you wonder! :)
Spiritual Connections.......2007-05-30
I really like all of Sylvia's Books. This one was great work also.
I know a few people who also read it and really liked it. It goes in great detail of the relationships we do have with other people. More people are involved in your life that we are aware of. Many people who we don't even know their names.
I highly suggest you read this book.
Easy to read and understand.......2007-05-21
This book was very down to Earth and I feel explains relationships on a much more deeper and personal level. Although, I did have a tough time trying to figure out what theme I have and what theme other people might have. I liked how she included all kinds of relationships, from casual aquaintances to family members to spouses. My favorite concept from the book is to stop looking for mr/ms perfect, because you'll never find them, and besides, you're not even perfect yourself, lol :p I've always known that, I just wish more people would realize that.
Also, she encourages people to take care of themselves and to have respect for their partners feelings and that to expect someone to love you for just you is not going to be enough. I had problems in the past with boyfriends who never took care of themselves and just expected me to love them the way they are, even though they haven't showered in days and smelled really awful :p Sorry pal, so long! So I could relate to alot of things from this book.

Sit at the foot of a native elder and listen as great wisdom of days long past is passed down. In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. It's the how and why one should do these things that make The Four Agreements worth reading and remembering. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
In The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting agreements that rob people of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, the Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform anyone's life to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love. These agreements are deceptively simple: Be impeccable with your word (speak with integrity; say only what you mean); Don't take anything personally (nothing others do is because of you); Don't make assumptions (find the courage to ask questions and express what you really want); Always do your best (and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret). Peter Coyote's resonant reading emphasizes the power in these remarkable tenets.

Easy Read....great message.......2007-06-29
Though the theme is kind of obviuos, alot of people miss this ship and still do not understand how to practice the purpose of this book.It should be called "easy buddhism" LOL. I love the book though, and it took me two hours to read...so I learned alot in that small amount of time.
Not unless you're already "into" this kind of stuff........2007-06-27
Personally, after listening to almost half, I have come to the conclusion that this stuff is a bunch of......poo. It rambles endlessly and whatever the author is trying to say is needlessly basted in an unending metaphor. It's just idiotic nonsense and unless you're already died in the wool mystic new-age please don't waste your money. Or send me a couple of dollars and a pre-posted envelope and you can have mine. Hurry before I throw it in the garbage.
We Always Come Back To This Source!.......2007-06-21
Over the course of several years of coaching leadership groups it never ceases to amaze me how often group members and I, myself, find crucial applications for these deceptively simple Four Agreements. When we don't KNOW we all have a strong desire to fill in the blank. When we remember Ruiz's guidance to Never Assume, and to not Take It Personally, we can hold off our anxiety, and leave it blank until we do really know the facts. The author does a great job of expanding our thinking on these simple principles and convinces us that life may not really be that complicated after all if we don't make it so. On the personal level I have bought a copy of this book for every one of my grown children and they all love it!

Started reading this publication and came to my senses. Jehovah God in his word, The Bible, has given wisdom necessary for over two thousand years. All I had/have to do is consult it, then DO.
Gave book to the Salvation Army.
A Master Plan for Life.......2007-05-29
The Four Agreements are ones that I follow. Basic rules for a good honest and Spiritual life. Have given it and recommended it to many over the years. It's hard to argue with the pure logic and mystical wisdom presented in these pages. The lesson of the Magical Kitchen has improved my life. Peace, Saint

Book Description
The book you hold in your hands is revolutionary, a groundbreaking exploration of the science of intention. It is also the first book to invite you, the reader, to take an active part in its original research. Drawing on the findings of leading scientists on human consciousness from around the world, The Intention Experiment demonstrates that thought is a thing that affects other things. Thought generates its own palpable energy that you can use to improve your life, to help others around you, and to change the world.
In The Intention Experiment, internationally bestselling author Lynne McTaggart, an award-winning science journalist and leading figure in the human consciousness studies community, presents a gripping scientific detective story and takes you on a mind-blowing journey to the farthest reaches of consciousness. She profiles the colorful pioneers in intention science and works with a team of renowned scientists from around the world, including physicist Fritz-Albert Popp of the International Institute of Biophysics and Dr. Gary Schwartz, professor of psychology, medicine, and neurology at the University of Arizona, to determine the effects of focused group intention on scientifically quantifiable targets -- animal, plant, and human.
The Intention Experiment builds on the discoveries of McTaggart's first book, international bestseller The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe, which documented discoveries that point to the existence of a quantum energy field. The Field created a picture of an interconnected universe and a scientific explanation for many of the most profound human mysteries, from alternative medicine and spiritual healing to extrasensory perception and the collective unconscious. The Intention Experiment shows you myriad ways that all this information can be incorporated into your life.
After narrating the exciting developments in the science of intention, McTaggart offers a practical program to get in touch with your own thoughts, to increase the activity and strength of your intentions, and to begin achieving real change in your life. After you've begun to realize the amazing potential of focused intention, and the times when it is most powerful, McTaggart invites you to participate in an unprecedented experiment: Using The Intention Experiment website to coordinate your involvement and track results, you and other participants around the world will focus your power of intention on specific targets, giving you the opportunity to become a part of scientific history.
The Intention Experiment redefines what a book does. It is the first "living" book in three dimensions. The book's text and website are inextricably linked, forming the hub of an entirely self-funded research program, the ultimate aim of which is philanthropic. An original piece of scientific investigation that involves the reader in its quest, The Intention Experiment explores human thought and intention as a tangible energy -- an inexhaustible but simple resource with an awesome potential to focus our lives, heal our illnesses, clean up our communities, and improve the planet.
The Intention Experiment also forces you to rethink what it is to be human. As it proves, we're connected to everyone and everything, and that discovery demands that we pay better attention to our thoughts, intentions, and actions. Here's how you can.

PERFECTION.......2007-06-13
Book arrived quickly and in perfect condition.
Fascinating, revealing, convincing... I hope to become part of the experiment!.......2007-06-11
Very interesting project. I intend to become part of this experiment. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in intentional focused use of the energy of which we are. I hope to learn a lot about how we use our thoughts to create our reality.
Charles
Finally ... the science behind the Law of Attraction!.......2007-06-08
The Intention Experiment answered many of the questions for me behind the Law of Attraction.
It provides well researched and detailed reviews of the significant number of scientific research experiments (all well referenced) being conducted around the world in this growing area of interest. Lynne's discussion of the different research methodologies, approaches and results was detailed yet accessible, and didn't shy away from negative results.
If you want to learn the science behind the Law of Attraction theories, this is the book to read!
regards
Ingrid

Well Written, but Questionable Research.......2007-06-02
Ever since reading the holographic universe, I looked forward to reading more scientific or thoughtful analysis of 'intention' or the power of thought. Too often new age advocates talk about the 'law' of attraction and how 'quantum physics' proves their philosphies. They might sell books but they do a great disservice when people find out their claims are dubious at best. So I looked forward to reading this, unfortunately she cites some pretty flawed research.
On the upside, it's one of the few books does offer some research and background to what you have to do to properly 'visualize' - and some of it is contrary to popular notion - for example, she says you need to 'power up' and get excited when visualizing goals which runs counter to prevailing notion of alpha state (which she recommends for other things)
Transformational.......2007-06-02
Scientifically based "The Intention Experiment" demonstrates awesome findings about consciousness, connectedness and how thought has the power to affect animals, plants, humans,-the very structure of our lives.
What I like most about "The Intention Experiment" are the easy to use, effective approaches to initiate positive change in our lives. Thoughts and intentions are tangible forces and we are all connected to everyone and everything. Of paramount importance is that we become consciously aware of our thoughts, intentions and actions, so that we can begin to manifest lives of abundance and prosperity.
Some further transformational reading can be found in the following books;
Nexus: A Neo Novel, a recently released, new age, psychological/spirtual adventure about compassion, life transformation and self-empowerment.

Blasphemy! Heresy! Who does this man think he is, claiming to speak directly to God?! Jesus did it, Muhammad did it, the Jewish prophets did it, but none of their Gods had the sardonic wit or raw verve of Prophet Walsch's God. Neale Donald Walsch isn't claiming to be the Messiah of a new religion, just a frustrated man who sat down one day with pen in his hand and some tough questions in his heart. As he wrote his questions to God, he realized that God was answering them... directly... through Walsch's pen. The result, far from the apocalyptic predictions or cultic eccentricities you might expect, turns out to be matter-fact, in-your-face wisdom on how to get by in life while remaining true to yourself and your spirituality.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Book, Not Very Satanic.......2007-06-21
I went out and bought this book after seeing the film version of Conversations with God. I was a little dissapointed that I could only find it in hardcover, but I still bought it. I have been raised Lutheran, but recently I've started to have different experiences and this religion is one that I don't think is right for me. I'm not saying its bad. This book really did help me to understand alot of things about god. Some christians hate this book because they say it is from the devil, but i have come to find out that anything popular or anything that makes money is from the devil.People need to stop comparing this to the bible, the author never said it was the bible. This book says to many good things about god and trusting him to be from the devil. Those who think that probably didn't even finish reading the book. Its ok to have religion, but dont think that just because something is different from what you have been taught it is from satan. Too many So Called Christians give him so much credit and publicity and they wonder why satan is such a big thing. this is a good book. You should read to see another view of life. And you don't have to believe everything you read. It's hard because christians give God a bad name by how they act and many people are scared away by the actions of some so called christians that they don't even get to see what god has for them.
nice thoughts........2007-06-09
I read this book when it first came out many years ago. The ideas are similar to other spiritual books put in a different way. A little old for present day philosophy but good when it first came out. I had however read a better book in this field so it made this one look rather lacking in foundation. Nevertheless a fun and interesting read.
Don't believe the hype!.......2007-05-25
WOW, i read this book recently after hearing about it from several different sources and it was actually purchased for me by a well meaning friend. I now fully intend to sit down with this friend whom i love VERY much and tell her what a blasphemous tragedy this book is.
While i did find some of the information in it helpful, such as praying with gratitude and having a more positive attitude about our lives and the events that occur, the one statement that rocked me to my core was that "God" doesn't CARE about us. He sits and watches us objectively and has no concern for what happens to us one way or the other.
God DOES care about each and everyone of us and I'm certain that God is deeply grieved to see His children being brainwashed and filled with such damning information. "Who said Jesus was perfect?" The BIBLE said so. The Bible is the answer, not this book.
I know from having read the Bible personally that satan knows scripture and will use it to his advantage when necessary as he does so frequently in this book but there is always the slight 'twist' on the actual biblical reference and THAT's where the problem lies.
As I read this book, I was reminded of another very popular book "The DaVinci Code". When i read that book, I remember thinking, "Oh MY LORD, can any of this be true?", and after an evening of much thought and prayer I concluded that this was an attempt to dilute my faith and pull me away from my belief in God and my place in His kingdom. This is exactly what satan has in mind. Attempts of this nature will only happen with more frequency as we rapidly approach the Lord's coming! I didn't finish reading that book, I threw it away and strongly recommended that others do not read it or only read it with the knowledge that it is a work of satan and to be better able to speak with the many that have read it and succumb to the lies.
The bible speaks quite clearly about these things occuring and MANY being fooled. It is a BITTER tragedy that many will be fooled with this one as well! The devil moves about like a roaring lion looking for those he might devour...i'm sure he'll have a full stomach from the many he'll take due to this book.
I want to end with this, there is much about God, the bible, Jesus etc. that I don't understand and am perfectly willing to admit this but my faith carries me through and my life experience PROVES to me that God LOVES me and has been present for me in many difficult times. One day when I see Him 'face to face' I will understand. Until then, I remember that I am just a puny human being on a tiny little speck floating through a vast universe and couldn't POSSIBLY have the knowledge or the wisdom in this relm to understand the workings of the Creator of the Universe.
I will continue to pray that the lasting impact of this book doesn't cause to many to fall by the wayside.
A Formula to Make Millions.......2007-05-20
This is yet another example of someone realizing that gullible people number in the millions, and therefore much money can be made, even from blatant lies, e. g., "I'm talking with God." Don't even bother - use the time to come up with your own ideas, based on your experience and knowledge!
easy meaningful read .......2007-05-19
I found Conversations with God an easy and intriguing read. The author's (God) ideas made me question and reflect on the guiding forces in my life. The idea that `God' is not making judgments, but human minds have constructed the idea of good vs bad, and right and wrong was provoking.
I too believe that God speaks to all, but most(including myself), listen with our ears and minds, but not our hearts.
The book introduced insights that were new to my mind. These ideas resonated; speaking to the unease that I indentlfy as the feeble human condition.
The book was an easy and entertaining read, give it a try. The depth and wisdom of `God's' conversations with the author were validating to feelings that float slightly beneath the surface of consciousness.
Again, give it a try.

Book Description
Toddlers can drive you bonkers…so adorable and fun one minute…so stubborn and demanding the next! Yet, as unbelievable as it sounds, there is a way to turn the daily stream of “nos” and “don’ts” into “yeses” and hugs…if you know how to speak your toddler’s language. In one of the most useful advances in parenting techniques of the past twenty-five years, Dr. Karp reveals that toddlers, with their immature brains and stormy outbursts, should be thought of not as pint-size people but as pintsize…cavemen.
Having noticed that the usual techniques often failed to calm crying toddlers, Dr. Karp
discovered that the key to effective communication was to speak to them in their own primitive language. When he did, suddenly he was able to soothe their outbursts almost every time! This amazing success led him to the realization that children between the ages of one and four go through four stages of “evolutionary” growth, each linked to the development of the brain, and each echoing a step in prehistoric humankind’s journey to civilization:
• The “Charming Chimp-Child” (12 to 18 months): Wobbles around on two legs, grabs everything in reach, plays a nonstop game of “monkey see monkey do.”
• The “Knee-High Neanderthal” (18 to 24 months): Strong-willed, fun-loving, messy, with a vocabulary of about thirty words, the favorites being “no” and “mine.”
• The “Clever Caveman” (24 to 36 months):
Just beginning to learn how to share, make friends, take turns, and use the potty.
• The “Versatile Villager” (36 to 48 months): Loves to tell stories, sing songs and dance, while trying hard to behave.
To speak to these children, Dr. Karp has developed two extraordinarily effective techniques:
1) The “fast food” rule — restating what your child has said to make sure you got it right;
2) The four-step rule — using gesture, repetition, simplicity, and tone to help your
irate Stone-Ager be happy again.
Once you’ve mastered “toddler-ese,” you will be ready to apply behavioral techniques specific to each stage of your child’s development, such as teaching patience and calm, doing time-outs (and time-ins), praise through “gossiping,” and many other strategies. Then all the major challenges of the toddler years — including separation anxiety, sibling rivalry, toilet training, night fears, sleep problems, picky eating, biting and hitting, medicine taking — can be handled in a way that will make your toddler feel understood. The result: fewer tantrums, less yelling, and, best of all, more happy, loving time for you and your child.
From the Hardcover edition.

no regrets.......2007-06-09
I bought this book because the first book, "The happiest baby on the block" was a lifesaver for me when my youngest was a baby 3 years ago. He is now 3 and while I bought the book a little late so all of the information does not apply to me, there is some very helpful things in the book, and suggestions that you can start using right away.
Limited value.......2007-05-31
The principles behind communicating with your toddler, such as communicating in a way that your toddler understands and showing empathy and acknowledging his feelings are valid. I, however am uncomfortable with the idea of emulating the toddler's undesirable behavior in any way and believe that parents should always strive to model the desirable behavior for the child.
Go for the meat of the book, not the toppings.......2007-05-22
The other reviewers basically highlighted the almost silly methodology of this book as well as the bizarre analogy; however, readers need to get past that dressing and toppings to go straight to the meat. It's a bit sad that Karp had to listen to his editors about dressing up the content to get parents to laugh and read his book, but this guide is still a valuable resource for parents embarking on the adventure to toddlerhood with their children. I cannot wait to try out the fast food rule, for example.
Oh, and just for the obnoxious religious extremist reviewer, my 10-month-old is definitely a chimp baby complete with the hoots, hollers, yells, Curious George looks, and monkeying around. Seriously though, the inability to see the analogy of toddlers as little neanderthals as a setup is just poor reading comprehension. And neanderthals are fact. I suggest you go to a natural history museum to see the skulls.
If you buy this book, read it for the content and techniques. Don't get pissed off at the presentation.
Great Guidebook.......2007-05-13
This is a great guide for those of us learning how to communicate again as a toddler. The author uses humor and common-sense approaches to the problems we all face as parents of little "neanderthals" as he refers to them. The book gives great insight and a different perspective that has helped us to really appreciate and understand how our son thinks and be better parents as a result.
Christians beware..........2007-05-12
If this book has helpful parenting advice I was unable to get to it. I couldn't get past the first chapter which gives a very detailed 'historic' account of the evolution of man from fish with gills through thought processing human and compares the gestational period from conception through age 4 as a mirror image of mans million year evolutionary process. As a creation beliving Christian I cannot stomach such 'factual' writing where evolution is concerned and had to put the book down. I was very disappointed because it seemed that it might have made some good points otherwise.

I am finally getting past the door.......2007-06-27
This book is an illumination of truth in a world wasting away in denominational and religious darkness. I thank God for the grace to stay with my faith until this point to read a book that is so dynamic and confirms the good work that God, through His Holy Spirit, has started in me. Prior to this book I thought I was crazy or that everyone else just wasn't getting it. If it's not the off the shelf cracker box Jesus, most people don't accept the idea that our faith is deeper than just Sunday morning church. Thank God for people like Myles Munroe who take the time to spend with the "tutor" and re-discover the truth.
Wow! Very good!.......2007-06-11
I found that this book really explained Kingdom living. We serve a king. We live in a kingdom (that we cannot see, but is much more real than what we do see) and not a democracy. When the king states something it is not a suggestion! Sin is sin! At the same time promises for everything are there for kingdom kids!
the kingdom.......2007-06-08
This book is wonderful and breaks down the principles of the kingdom in laymen's terms. I have not read Munroe's previous book on the Kingdom but will be buying it shortly. I would recommend buying both books at the same time
REDISCOVERING THE KINGDOM.......2007-05-15
I WAS ENLIGHTENED TO CONCEPTS REGARDING HOW TO LIVE AS A BORN AGAIN BELIEVER THAT I'D NEVER IMAGINED! READING THIS CAUSED A HUNGER TO BEGIN IN ME. AND I AM IN HOT PURSUIT OF UNDERSTANDING MORE OF GOD'S WAYS AND WANT TO WALK WITH HIM.
Life changing!!!.......2007-05-12
This is an incredible book that every Christian should read. It changes the way you think about life here on earth and your authority here. Monroe teaches about how God made man in His image and likeness, so that he/she could rule the earth. After mankind lost that authority to Satan through disobedience in the Garden of Eden, God sent Jesus to return dominion to man. This book will help you understand how the Kingdom works, what authority you have, and how to operate in it. You won't be the same after reading this book!

A Life-Changing Book.......2007-06-27
This is a very thought-provoking read. I am still reflecting on it and intend to re-read it. It has changed my perspective on myself and the universe. I liked parts 1 and 3 better than part 2, but all in all, I am glad to have experienced it.
The answers to life's most interesting questions.......2007-06-20
The book is amazing at the very least. If you are considering any of the first 3 books included here separately, get this instead! Everyone has asked the questions posed here by the authur, and the answers are SO simple, yet amazing. A must read for ANYONE who seeks answers to life's most common (to all of life) questions. If you chose to disregard the entire book as truth, it is still worth the read if you love experiencing 'streching of the mind'. I have turned several close friend's on to this, and they each thank me frequently-still.
More than a conversation.......2007-06-13
I purchased this book after I saw the movie......the movie was the appetizer and the book (volumes 1-3) is a delightful, savory, thought provoking, life changing main course that you can't get enough of. This is an important book for this time, I pray that people can really wrap their heads and hearts around this and affect a positive change in their individual lives, the planet and in the universe. This book could affect a "do over" for humanity if people open up to all this love, drink it in and pass it on. His new book "Happier than God" I think will be a sumptuous desert. I recommend this book every person on this planet.
Can I put 10 stars here????.......2007-06-13
I am still just barely into book one and I am HOOKED!!! This is some of the most insightful reading I have EVER come across. I can not recommend this book enough. Even if you are a person who believes that God stopped talking to us with John of Revelation, you will get something out of this book.
As Mr. Walsch says early on. Read the book, take what you know to be true with you and leave the rest behind.
I am willing to bet that even the most conservative Christian, Muslim or Jewish person will find at least parts of this book inspirational.
Note that I did say all three religions. Also Hindu and any other religion that believes in a supreme being will benefit from this book.
It is up to you as to how much you get out of it but I guarantee that you will not think you are wasting your money.
This is all three books together and if I had it to do over, I would have bought the three separate. First off it is cheaper if you read book one and do not find anything of value in it. But primarily because the book is daunting. I've been reading this book for about a month and have only made it to chapter 2. I have to read a passage and really think about it before moving on. It is THAT good.
This book could change your life...........2007-06-10
Healthy scepticism is always a good thing, so long as you don't close your mind! Read with an open mind and heart, there is little in this book that doesn't make deepest sense - you just know it's got many a profound truth in its pages. Whether you can accept its origins as stated or not, it gives a clear message about how to live your life day to day, minute to minute, and give it a whole new meaning and sense of purpose. Not to mention a healthy "re-minder" that only you can drive your own life - how many religions will tell you that? I'm recommending this to everyone I can who seems to be ready for it. Powerful, empowering stuff!

Book Description
Writing from his prison cell in Nazi Germany in 1945 Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian, sketched a vision of what he called "religionless Christianity." In this book, John Shelby Spong puts flesh onto the bare bones of Bonhoeffer's radical thought. The result is a strikingly new and different portrait of Jesus of Nazareth—a Jesus for the non-religious.
Spong challenges much of the traditional understanding that has for so long surrounded the Jesus of history, from the tale of his miraculous birth to a virgin, to the account of his cosmic ascension into the sky at the end of his life. Spong questions the historicity of the ideas that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, that he had twelve disciples, and that the miracle stories were meant to be descriptions of supernatural events. He also speaks directly to those contemporary critics of Christianity who call God a "delusion" and who write letters to a "Christian nation" and describe how Christianity has become evil and destructive.
Spong invites his readers to look at Jesus through the lens of both the Jewish scriptures and the liturgical life of the first-century synagogue. Dismissing the dispute about Jesus' nature that consumed the church's leadership for the first 500 years of Christian history as irrelevant, Spong proposes a new way of understanding the divinity of Christ: as the ultimate dimension of a fulfilled humanity. Traditional Christians who still cling to dated concepts of the past will not be comfortable with this book; however, skeptics of the twenty-first century will not be quite so certain that dismissing Jesus is the correct pathway to walk. Jesus for the Non-Religious may be the book that finally brings the pious and the secular into a meaningful dialogue, opening the door to a living Christianity in the post-Christian world.

Spong's Culminating View of Jesus.......2007-06-21
Although the title is "Jesus for the Non Religious," i received the impression while reading this book that Spong is attempting to put down his final conclusions about Jesus and our knowledge about him from the scriptures. It is a summation, a tying together his lifetime studies on this subject.
The book is interestiing and well written, but it has a certain quality to it that I will describe as an attempt to take the reader step by step through various stages that lead him to his final conclusion of who Jesus was (is).
Spong begins by a form of reductionism---separating what we know for sure about Jesus from the myths surrounding him. In this Part 1 Spong ends up with very little we can be sure of: Jesus was born in the Jewish homeland; he was a teacher and a healer; he was opposed by the civil and religious leaders; he died by crucifixtion. All the rest---his words, deeds, miracles, healings, prophecies --we cannot be sure about.
The Gospels are almost entirely the work of those upon whom Jesus made such a great impression that they largely created his life and words as found in the four gospels.
In the second part he shows how the original Jewish followers of Jesus saw him through their tradition, culture and scriptures. Jesus was seens as the "new Passover:. Jesus was seen through the lens of Yom Kippur as both the perfect lamb slaughtered to reconcile man with God --- and, the scape goat laden with the evil of mankind. To a lesser degree, Jesus was seen as the "Son of Man" in the work of Ezekiel, the prophet.
Jesus was also viewed as the suffering servant of Second Isaiah and as the "Good Shepherd".
In the third and final part of the book, Bishop Spong examines what is left of Jesus after identifying the myths and accepting that Jesus made a profound impression upon his early followers who then constructed his life story using as material and as a pattern -- sections of the Hebrew scriptures.
Spong describes evolution on several pages culminating when the creature we call a human being became such a person --- by the dawn of "self conciousness. However, when the first humans realized their identity and saw that they were surrounded by a possibly dangerous Nature, animals, other beings --- they were filled with insecurity. This result is the inate drive for survival found within human beings to this day. Spong identifies ways that human have sought to reassure themselves of their existence and value: tribal relationships, prejudices, stereotypes and --- religion.
Jesus broke through all the these barriers that effectively cut mankind off from true freedom and happiness.
I was waiting for the final section because I thought "What is there left?"
Bishop Spong that --even after his life's work (and, possibly because of it) he still is a God intoxicated man and one who sees what God is like in the being of Jesus.
Frankly, for me, the final fourth of the book was rather unsatisfying. For example, what Christian church can one become a member of that sees Jesus as Bishop Spong hascome to perceive him? This latest view of Jesus is a "work in progress" -- especially in that their are no structures, fellowships, etc. that are available to those who find Spong's conclusions --- the answers to their quest.
A Great Book with a Bad Title.......2007-06-12
The title of this book does not convey its thrust very well. I think that "Christianity for the Twenty-first Century" would have been a better choice. (Note: if you are a bible literalist, this book and this review are not for you.) In this book Bishop Spong continues his exploration of the meaning of Jesus for modern people. His message is that you can believe in science and rationalism without having to abandon Christianity. For example, on p. xii he says, "God and truth cannot be incompatible," and on p. 215, "So theism can die without God dying."
The heading for the first part is "Separating the Human Jesus from the Myth," where "myth" is to be taken in its best definition as a meaningful story that is the basis for a belief system. He then goes through many chapters separating the human teacher from the christology, rather successfully, I believe. If there is a weakness to his book, it is that his statement of what is left for a modern belief system could have been made stronger. I would have liked to have seen more on the idea of acting on the message of Jesus: help for the poor, the sick, and the down-troddened.
A superb summary for liberal christians.......2007-06-10
This book is the best book ever written for thinking liberal Christians who can see that our current theistic conceptions of religion and God no longer fit our understanding of how the world works. It is the best attack on biblical literalism I have ever read. It both challenged and strengthened my understanding of Jesus and Christianity. I would compare it to Richard Dawkins's "God Delusion" which also challenged and strengthened my beliefs. However Bishop Spong's explanation of the rationale for theistic religion was far clearer than that given by Dawkins (and far more convincing). My only minor criticism is that the last section of the book is really a cry for inclusiveness and tolerance rather than a clear summary of what atheistic christianity should be. Perhaps that's for the next book
Jesus for the rest of us!.......2007-06-05
Tired of Bible-thumpers, door-to-door evangelists and televangelists? Ashamed to call yourself a Christian because people will think you're a bigoted know-nothing? Do you have a deep attachment to the man Jesus but wouldn't be caught dead in a church? Well, take hope!
Jack Spong has thrown religious clutter overboard in this exciting new book and allowed people of the 21st century to see the wonder and awe which Jesus' original followers must have experienced in his presence. Not superman just a super man!
In the first third of the book, Spong, dismantles all the man-made supernatural rubbish layered on the human Jesus. The reasons why the early Church did these things are many and varied but "modern" scholars, over the past 150 years or so, now know that things like the virgin birth and bodily resurrection were NOT things that the earliest followers of Jesus would have recognized as having anything to do with what Jesus was about.
The middle third of the book focuses on how and why the original evangelists made Jesus look like the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy and/or a figure of importance like Moses or David. Most of us read this stuff in the Bible and just assume that it's "history" but once again, Spong points out that modern scholarship recognizes this as interpretive material to make Jesus the next logical step for Jews and eventually Gentiles in God's "plan" for us.
The final third of the book is really the pinnacle of Spong's thinking regarding where people of a spiritual inclination (Christian or otherwise) can go with this de-mythologized human Jesus. We don't need to grovel before a God and thank a God for getting Jesus killed so that in some bizzare way we think/believe that Jesus' blood washes away "original sin" that most of us don't even think/know we've got! Rather we, like the original followers of Jesus, need to see something "God-like" in the way in which Jesus lived and died.
If, as Spong argues, God can provisionally be described as "the source of love, the source of life, and the ground of being" then in Jesus we have seen someone who loves wastefully, enhances being and exhorts us to live fully. This is not just some New Age bumper sticker. This is a challenge for all of us to follow in Jesus' footsteps and create the world that we know God would want. Confronting injustice, corrupt power and killing prejudice can get us crucified, too - but that is the path of Jesus.
Don't bother reading this book if you're a "born again" Christian - it'll just make you mad and confuse you. But, if, like me, you see beauty and richness in the Christian tradition and the man Jesus DESPITE all of the ugliness of institutional religion (now and in the past) this book is a MUST read.
Highly recommended.
The usual from Sprong.......2007-05-16
Once you begin to discredit the Gospels and become your own authority what you get is Sprong. I trust the early witnesses of the Jesus story and Church father's far more than Sprong. Would I be called crazy if I mentioned the Holy Spirit and tradition of the Church. 'Jesus in the House' is much more to my liking. Peace

Book Description
Updated with a new 12 week companion Bible study, Joanna Weaver's popular book shows women how to blend intimacy with Jesus and service for Him.
An invitation for every woman who feels she isn't godly enough...isn't loving enough...isn't doing enough
The life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord's feet...but the daily demands of a busy world just won't leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him...yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.
Then comes Jesus, right into the midst of your busy Mary/Martha life-and he extends the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters of Bethany. Tenderly he invites you to choose "the better part"-a joyful life of "living-room" intimacy with him that flows naturally into "kitchen service" for him.
How can you make that choice? With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story and its creative, practical strategies, Joanna shows how all of us-Marys and Marthas alike-can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

Wonderfully informative..........2007-06-14
Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver is a wonderful exploration of two prominent women in the bible. I love how Ms. Weaver relates it relative to our lives today. As a Martha type striving to be more like Mary it was totally relatable and relevant. I loved the way Ms.
Weaver revealed her own struggles with Marthalike tendencies.
I recommend this book to any woman who is struggling with the busyness of life and would love to slow down and appreciate like Mary. Wonderful spiritual blessing, Ms. Weaver.

I teach a ladies class and we chose this book to study. We have just recently started and we are finding out that some of us are like Mary and some are like Martha. Very good book for everyone to read!

I am SO Martha!.......2007-04-19
I had so many women recommend this book that I finally gave in and picked up a copy. And I was not disappointed. Using the biblical example of Mary and Martha, as well as her own personal experiences, the author points the reader to balancing the Mary/Martha in each of us in order to achieve a deeper intimacy with God. Now if I can just put all of this practical and thoughtful advice into action... I am SO Martha!
