Book Description

David Horowitz underwent the most dramatic political conversion since Whittaker Chambers. And at every stop of his intellectual journey, he has produced sparkling and provocative commentary. From his youthful days as a leader of the New Left in the 1960s to his current role as master strategist of the right, Horowitz's polemical legacy is unmatched in wit and integrity.

Horowitz's newest book, Left Illusions: An Intellectual Odyssey, provides the first map of his intellectual development. Complementing his acclaimed autobiography, Radical Son, the selections in Left Illusions range from his first book, published over forty years ago, to his most recent writings on the war against terror. The pieces include his polemics, journalism, and scholarship, along with select chapters from most of his books. Their subjects range from the origins of the New Left to the Cold War, from the fall of communism to political radicalism, race relations, the war on terror, the intellectual culture wars, and modern conservatism. Twenty-eight of the selections have not been published in book form or are contained in texts that are generally unavailable.

"I make no apologies for my present position," Horowitz writes. "My values have not changed, but my sense of what supports them and makes them possible has." He became profoundly disillusioned with the radical movement because of a tragedy both personal and political. The whole fascinating story is here for the reader to follow as it unfolded. Left Illusions is really the story of our times, lived out by an extraordinary individual.

5 out of 5 stars Another good read from Horowitz..........2007-05-29

Excellent read. I especially enjoyed his straight-forward organization of the book into chapters as opposed to a general narrative. Just more of the fact-based, logical, conservative thinking that has made him well-known.

3 out of 5 stars Hell Hath no Fury like An Ex-Commie Scorned!.......2006-11-28

While I definitely agree with horowitz on (and have experienced first hand)the extreme toxicity of the left-I'm not paying for any more recycled chapters! Also I am not a neo con and can't take their hypocritical support of the most monstrous affirmative action project of all time: Israel. While I seriously agree with him on the black power movement's "fatuous" and dangerous racialism-his obsession with anti-semitism and categorical support for Israel give him no room to talk. His "intrusions of ego" as some conservatives have labeled his work are tiresome, and his is just a sickly hungry wounded ego I have no desire to feed any longer. For Example, Horowitz's obsessive (which seems to be his most overriding and monotonous trait) self-pitying ruminations about his family just really aren't that interesting.

Definitely check this book out-I wouldn't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-05-15

This is a fantastic book that presents logical, well-argued ideas that are never heard on college campuses today. As a moderately conservative college student, I wish the moderate liberals here would read it. It says a lot about conservative ideology, refuting liberals' claims that conservatives are rascist, control the media, hate the poor, etc. His writings about conservatives on college campuses are so true, and it was really a shame. But what I found most disturbing was that much of the information and ideas Horowitz presents are topics that we have discussed endlessly in our college classes, and not once has anything from the alternative side. As Horowitz says, any view that strays from the exact far left view is either suppressed or subject to vicious attack. I really recommend this book, it is very enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely HIL-ARIOUS.......2006-05-13

I really love how people build entire ideologies off of totally illusory categorizations. LEFT. RIGHT. LEFT. LEFT. RIGHT. LEFT. Why o why are people so easily sold on these meaningless terms used solely for political gain/support. People that think him the great intellectual that he thinks himself, have mastered his same kind of ill-based logic and lack of self-awareness/introspection, critical thinking/analysis...Well since he was once on the "LEFT" and now bats for the "RIGHT" then he most definitely has some awesome insights. The only insights this maniac have are those insights on the corrupt world of politics and politicians whose only aim to maintain the establishment that exists. PERIOD. Well...for David...the establishment that supports him does him up pretty good so of course he's rahrahing for their team. Oy vey people...stop letting yourselves be rallied into illusory divided teams - conservatives vs. liberals...democrats vs. republicans...left-wing vs. right-wing...and go back real divisions - truth vs. falsehood...good vs. evil...right vs. wrong...justice vs. oppression...and don't bow down to worship the false gods (heads of state).

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating.......2006-03-25

David Horowitz is a unique individual whom has come out of a politically subversive family to become a contemporary conservative and who by writing shows the complexity of human politic and the internal drive towards a humane world view. One lesson he teaches to all is to stop behaving like a victim, a pandemic problem in the US.

It has been said that truth is stranger than fiction. "Left Illusions" is a real expression of this truism. In a thoughtful confessional, Horowitz rationally discusses the deceitful and destructive actions of the left, which have destroyed scores of people in our own nation and still rules the cultural zeitgeist in a jacobin fashion.

Illuminating are his stories of the left in the 20th century, the political ineptitude of the Republicans, the experience of being conservative on contemporary university campuses, the hypocrisy of race politics and more.

I dislike many of his anti-Christian statements in his chapter on The Passion of the Jews; yet, I appreciate his tribal frankness, which is a rare quality. This confirms my position that despite the religious difference between Christians and Jews, on religious grounds, we need to protect the Jews (though this does not mean beyond criticism) - again a growing threat. My father was a Christian man who fought as an American soldier and helped liberate Dachau - we don't want that sort of thing again.

While I don't hold all the same opinions as Horowitz, which many people who claim political alliance these days tend to do, I respect his clarity and illuminating writing. He takes us to a higher and more complex vista of the human condition.
