The next best thing to an actual visit.......2006-09-23
I too have had the privilege of visiting Mr. Metz's garage-cum-museum, which is only a half hour's drive from here. If you can't get to see his collection first hand, this is the next best thing.
fascinating reading and a fascinating museum.......2002-06-28
this book is an excellent pictorial trip through one of the world's finest collections of bicycles and related items. i have actually been to the Metz Bicycle Museum in Freehold, New Jersey and have had a personalized tour by David Metz, the owner of the museum which is the basis for this book. this book is a very good introduction to the history of bicycles and the photograpy is excellent. however, on an actual tour of the museum you get some of the most interesting stories first hand from David Metz. this 87 year young collector is only too happy to share his knowledge of bicycles with any visitor to his museum. the book and a trip to the museum if at all possible will both be something to remember

Book Description
Following the tremendous success of her book of portraits, Wise Women, acclaimed photographer Joyce Tenneson now turns her lens to the life of flowers. In this enchanting series of photographs, Tenneson breaks new ground by recording the often unseen and overlooked later phases in a plant's life, and finds exquisite beauty in their blossoming and gradual decline. These stunning portraits celebrate the life cycle and allow the reader to appreciate flowers in a new way, as well as contemplate the poignancy, fragility, and continual beauty of life itself. Tenneson's photographs follow in the long tradition of botanical illustrations of the 18th and 19th centuries as well as photographic masters such as Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Irving Penn. Just as Tenneson's Wise Women chronicled the energy, vitality, and beauty of older women, FLOWER PORTRAITS offers a compelling look at the radiant and exquisitely individual metamorphosis of flowers in the later phases of their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Exquisite, sensual, and life-affirming.......2003-12-02
I absolutely love this book! Joyce Tenneson has captured the ephemeral and exquisite cycle of life in these sepia-toned photos. Each photograph is on a black background, bringing the "subjects" into sharp relief, allowing the viewer to examine in delicate detail the life cycle of flowers, from young bud to mature blossom, and on to dried yet beautiful perfection... and often, once again on to new life in the form of seed... a poignant analogy to the cycle of human existence. I bought this book because of its beauty, because it made me feel inspired to create beauty myself, and because it is simply very sensual and life-affirming.
Different in a very good way.......2003-05-30
Not just pretty pictures in this terrific book, but a deep insight and understanding of flowers and photos. I saw several of these photos in an exhibition at a gallery in Bethesd, MD and fell in love with the work by this master photographer. I bought the book and am now saving my pennies to buy a photo!
A real disappointment.......2003-05-15
I saw this book excerpted in the May issue of Oprah magazine and was delighted by the rich, colorful close-ups of flowers in full bloom. Right away, I ordered one book for myself and one for my mother-in-law (should have read the Amazon editorial review that notes the flowers are in the later stages of life). We were surprised and dismayed to find that every one of the photos is a dull brown flower on a black background--and nearly all of the flowers are dead or dying. We could still appreciate the beautiful photography and the theme of death & dying, but with the subtitle "The Life Cycle of Beauty" it would have been nice to see more of the full life cycle--as in colorful buds and full-blooms in rich hues. All of the bright, colorful photos that were in the magazine excerpt were instead rendered in dull browns. We're both sending our books back. Totally depressing.
Seeing flowers in a brand new way.......2003-05-02
What makes a great photographer? In the case of Tenneson, it has always been her own unique style, which translates so well across the many books and works that she has done over the years - ending in last year's best selling "Wise Women." So when Tenneson focused her considerable skills on the world of flowers, it's no surprise that she discovers that the beauty of a dying or dead flower, in its own unique decay, often delivers beautiful new insights - a Tennesonian insight - into the world of flowers. This is a photography book for people who not only like flowers, but a great photography book - period.

Book Description
Since 2000, Ilkka Uimonen has been photographing the seemingly endless cycle of violence between Israelis and Palestinians--seeking all the while to illuminate both sides of the story. Surrounded by history, he represented the present, knowing that one could never truly photograph the past. The images in Cycles do not follow the chronology of the events--they are very much Uimonen's personal narratives of his experiences. The sequence of 60 photographs of combatants and innocents is presented without an introduction: the violence and defining sentiments require none. All of the images are full bleed, and collectively provide a mesmeric testimony to the aggression, despair, and pride that exist without boundaries in Palestine. The starkness of Cycles closely reflects Uimonen's stark realism.

Excellent Q and A on the Whitetail and other wild life.A must for those who appreciate the wild.
Great book for the beginner and the experienced hunter........1999-02-05
This book is a question and answer book. The entire book is full questions about the whitetail deer. Leonard usually has data to support his answers to the questions in his book. He also gives other people credit when he uses an answer that he learned from their studies. This is a great book for either beginners or experienced hunters. I have been hunting for 14 years and I learned a lot of things from this book.

Book Description
The Archipelago paintings were first shown at the Honolulu Academy of Arts in 1991, and it is gratifying to bring them together again in this publication.
Archipelago, Tam's last major series of paintings, embodies his life-long quest to capture the essence of the world that surrounded him. These works were inspired by the life cycle of the Hawaiian Islands: new land forms emerging from the ocean floor, seamounts gradually building undersea, and islands erupting, growing, and eroding before ultimately being submerged and drowned beneath the swirling waves.
Tam was preoccupied with exploring the dynamic forces of geologic evolution, yet he approached this series of small, acrylic wash paintings and larger oils more systematically than any other project in his career. The works conform almost identically in size by media, and Tam organized them into six groups, reflecting the various stages in the evolution of a volcanic island - Pacifica, Magma, Islanding, Atoll, Tidal, and Abyss. changing physical state of the earth. Often working in series, he culminated his painting career with a body of four oil and acrylic wash paintings dating from 1988 to 1990. Closely related in theme, style and composition, the works in the series focus on the evolution of the Hawaiian Archipelago.
