Great thorough photography book.......2007-05-30
I bought it for a beginning photo class and love it.
Best book to start Photography with.......2007-03-18
I am doing a Fine Arts degree, and my Photographer lecturer said this would be the best basic book to get as a starter, she is right, it spells all the basic things you need to know to get started.
Photography (8th Edition).......2007-03-09
Thank you very much for the book. It was in good condition and i have been able to study from it.
"Photography" It covers it all........2007-01-22
This is the most extensive book I have seen on Photography; it covers ever aspect. If you're serious about learning photography this is the book for you. At first I thought it was expensive, but it is well worth the money!
If you take the information in this book and put it into practice, you will have what it takes to be a good photographer; even developing an eye. Through the photographs used to illustrate the lesson, two things are accomplished; easier to understand the concepts and developing the eye to see the way the lens sees.
Photography updated.......2007-01-11
As an photographic educator I have found this book to be a great tool in planning leasons and teaching not only current photography but it's history and background.

Film Directing Shot by Shot offers a good introduction to the rudiments of film production. Steven D. Katz walks his readers through the various stages of moviemaking, advising them at every turn to visualize the films they wish to produce. Katz believes that one of the chief tasks of filmmaking is to negotiate between our three-dimensional reality and the two-dimensionality of the screen. He covers the number of technical options filmmakers can use to create a satisfying flow of shots, a continuity that will make sense to viewers and aptly tell the film's story. Katz provides in-depth coverage of production design, storyboarding, spatial connections, editing, scene staging, depth of frame, camera angles, point of view, and the various types of stable compositions and moving camera shots.
Book Description
A complete catalogue of motion picture techniques for filmmakers. It concentrates on the 'storytelling' school of filmmaking, utilizing the work of the great stylists who established the versatile vocabulary of technique that has dominated the movies
since 1915. This graphic approach includes comparisons of style by interpreting a 'model script', created for the book, in storyboard form.
Customer Reviews:
Mind-opening, even if you aren't interested in directing.......2007-06-30
I've worked in the graphics design business for years, but more recently I've grown interested in working with video, primarily shorts and documentary work. I was looking for a book that could help teach me the "language" of motion and visual storytelling, and this book fit the bill. In fact, I found it to be incredibly inspiring as a student of art in general. It's extremely well-written, chock full of practical examples, and contains numerous time-worn techniques as well as cutting-edge experimentation. One funny thing: since it was written a few years before the desktop digital video revolution began, it talks about some of the difficult aspects of shooting which are now in many ways moot. But it's good to hear about the history of the craft.
If you have any interest in all in shooting, directing, or producing any kind of motion picture, show, or short, you'll definitely want to buy this book. However, be forewarned: you'll never be able to watch movies the same way again. You'll begin to pick up all the subtle nuances of filmmaking without even realizing it, so don't feel bad if you have to force yourself to re-engage with the actual story as you're watching!
Useful, pleasurable.......2007-05-07
I'm a college student, not at film school, who makes videos as a serious hobby. I thought this book was much better than other titles in the same market, because it's so specific. Instead of telling you what anyone with common sense knows, like "keep continuity" and "composition can affect the mood of a scene," this film lays it all out in detail. I recommend this for everyone who wants to improve. Even if you're not particularly interested in storyboarding, you'll learn how to think about your sequences in advance much better.
Learning the Rules Before You Break Them.......2007-01-13
Even though many of the great filmmakers may have not utilized storyboards, every one of them has pre-visualized their films.
Pre-visualization is the essence of what it means to be a director. A director can only be effective if he/she properly prepares for each scene. Even if one does not have every shot precisely planned out, they will still have an idea of the look and the flow of the process.
There are certainly many people who feel directing should be intuitive, that there should be no structure to the process or else creativity is stifled. This is a valid point from the perspective of the artist.
What is wonderful about this book is that it gives extensive insight into WHY one should cover a scene in a certain way. Directing as a profession requires a certain amount of preparation and PROOF that you have a handle on the film. Producers want reassurance that you have a vision worth pouring tens of millions of dollars into. Armed with the ability to properly express yourself in regard to your vision, you will have a much easier time convincing others to follow you.
So, in the end, if you are interested in studying the language of film and the methodology behind classic film composition and editing, then this book and the accompanying Film Directing: Cinematic Motion are essential.
Good book.......2007-01-11
This book goes a little overboard with all the storyboard info in it, but its still a highly educational book for novices. This book really wants you to develope technique for visualizing your film before you start shooting. That is beneficial for writers and filmmakers alike. I also have Katz' "Cinematic Motion" which a very good film directing book as well. I recommend buying them as a combo.
I wish the books were more aimed at video instead of film, but it really dont make much difference. The rules still apply.
Great technical information, very useful resource.......2006-06-01
This book covers everything you need from the technical aspects of setting up shots and planning your action. It uses storyboards as an effective teaching device to convey the basic and some more advanced concepts and does a better job than most of explaining the 180 degree rule. Negative reviews of this book state that it is too focused on the technical aspects of filmmaking and not as much on the people skills needed, which is true, but can a book really teach you how to talk to people? A great addition to any filmmaking library but would need resources for the non-technical aspects of film. You could make a great looking film based just on what is in this book, but it might not be the most thrilling. The writer does a good job of focusing on the work and not in telling his own stories.

Say no to silicone: The greatest natural breasts of our times
Some call it the American obsession, but men everywhere recognize the hypnotic allure of a large and shapely breast. In The Big Book of Breasts, Dian Hanson explores the origins of mammary madness through three decades of natural big-breasted nudes. Starting with the World War II Bosom-Mania that spawned Russ Meyer, Howard Hughes's The Outlaw and Frederick's of Hollywood, Dian guides you over, around, and in between the dangerous curves of infamous models including Michelle Angelo, Candy Barr, Virginia Bell, Joan Brinkman, Lorraine Burnett, Lisa De Leeuw, Uschi Digard, Candye Kane, Jennie Lee, Sylvia McFarland, Margaret Middleton, Paula Page, June Palmer, Roberta Pedon, Rosina Revelle, Candy Samples, Tempest Storm, Linda West, June Wilkinson, Julie Wills, and dozens more, including Guinness World Record holder Norma Stitz, possessor of the World's Largest Natural Breasts.

A high quality book for the right audience...........2007-06-24
I review a lot of different kinds of books including art and photography. This is a large, heavy, well-made volume that is targeted to people who appreciate the beauty of the female form as it appeared in pop art between the 40s and 70s. It is printed on very high quality paper and the images are more "artsy" than "erotic." However, I'm sure people who enjoy the nudes of this period highly charged.
There are many creative shots in this book and the women all have natural breasts. While this type of art is not my cup of tea, all of the images are large and high resolution. Would you expect less from Taschen. There is a pin up quality to most of the pictures and certainly this book is of historical interest to photographers of nudes or anyone who appreciates female beauty.
I wouldn't personally classify this as "light porn." The pictures are more naughty than pornographic and there are a lot of good facial shots where the woman's personality or some quality of her personality is captured. The lighting is often creative and the images follow a similar style, but the pictures aren't redundant.
I also think this book is fairly priced. I'm going to sell my copy only becuase it's not my thing. I prefer nude photography that is more abstract, uses lots of shadows in interesting ways and focuses on form. The nearer the photographs approach a sculpture of painting, the better for me whether it is male or female art. I also like more variety, styles and other creative elements. Cygny would be an example of one of my favorite photographers of nudes as well as Robert Farber.
A regular dude.......2007-05-13
I wish I would have kept my money.
Some nice pictures, but not worth the money
Boy Does This Make A Good Birthday Present For A Guy.......2007-04-14
I speak from personal experience. I got this for someone and, heck, I've barely seen him since, and when I have, he's been smiling. Oh, sure, make no mistake, the photography work is excellent, as is the overall depth of the study of this subject matter, but let's face it, at heart it's a picture book. Trust me, this is one gift that'll never get returned!
Truly Awesome.......2007-03-03
This book is very well titled. Everything about it is big, including the physical size of the book itself. Its not one you can slip past your wife unnoticed. It's a joy to look at though. Famous names from the past such as Paula Page and Linda West. (Now she is the sort of woman you could happily marry) A cavalcade of great beauties, (and gorgeous women) on every turn of the page that will take your breath away. It puts me in mind of the erotic magazines of many years ago, that were filled with just pictures of beautiful goddesses. It would be wonderful to see those stars as they are now.
The book goes through the decades and all the models are a joy to look at. None of your scrawny cat walk size 0s here, just full figured natural womanhood. Also included are the very well endowed Chesty Morgan and the ultimate of ultimates, Norma Stitz. If you like your women well developed then this is the book for you. I would highly recommend it. Also in a similar vein, if you like erotic stories about mature well proportioned women (and indeed men) then have a look at 100 PERCENT EROTICA by Suzie Van Aartman.
This book is busted.......2007-02-21
I cannot recommend this book except to teenage boys. Too much of a good thing gets boring and this book is a yawner. Also the cover is printed incorrectly, so that the black bra is misaligned by 1/2" and hanging in the air on one end. Save your money for something more fun.

Misleading title.......2007-06-12
The book should be called "The New Female Nude Photography". No sex here. Nothing wrong with that, I just feel the title is a bit misleading. Quality is up to Taschen standards (they're really high), but the content is somewhat dull. There's nothing terribly creative or groundbreaking here.
Wonderful Collection.......2007-05-12
The book contains a variety of photographers, with each presenting a short series of well done photos, using many different models. The overall quality of the collection is outstanding. I was particularly impressed with the highly detailed nature of the photos. For devotees of erotic photography, I would definitely recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Useful source but needs an index.......2007-06-28
Like several other reviewers I was initially disappointed in the book and in its format. However, after a closer look I discovered tons of useful information.
The biggest disadvantage of the book is the lack of a detailed index at the end. The book's aim is to clarify and advise. For that purpose an index is a must. Many items are discussed in several places in the book. True, most often there is a page number referral to other pages dealing with the same topic. Still, an index is the best way to quickly find out the desired information. I strongly recommend that the next edition of the book should include a detailed index.
Goes beyond "how" and "what" to "why.".......2007-06-04
When I bought my D80, I immediately began searching for a good "how-to" book that would get me going quickly. The "Short Course" book on the D80 turned out to be a good choice.
The author has managed to distill the essence of digital photography technique and the specifics of the D80 into a book that you could read in a weekend. Most important is that along with explaining how different configurations work, their advantages and disadvantages he also explains why you might choose one configuration over another so you can begin right away making informed decisions about how to use your camera.
I spent the last weekend doing macro shots in my wife's patio garden. Any time I needed help figuring out a problem with focus, aperture or anything else, I was always able to find a clear answer in one short paragraph.
Maybe Mr. Curtin should consider writing a "Short Course" book on how to write a short instruction book. I'm an IT professional and I know a lot of technical writers who would benefit from reading it.
I love this book.......2007-04-15
I own a double DVD set on learning the D80. It's much easier for me to sit and watch someone explain the camera visually. However, I don't always have a DVD player at my side. The large format, lay-flat feature of this book really appeals to me. Each feature of the D80 is explained in layman's terms and amply illustrated. Ok, the illustrations are in B&W. This was not even a consideration to me. There's a nice CD tucked inside the book with the identical book in Adobe PDF format... in color. I put more emphasis on the content of the book versus the quality. I bought this book to learn about my Nikon D80 and it did this very well. In my opinion - putting subject matter first, this is one of the better Nikon D80 learning manuals.
It's not pretty but it's good........2007-04-14
If you're looking for an aesthetic coffee-table book this isn't it. BUT - if you want an outstanding teaching tool to learn how to use Nikon D80 look no further. Excellent!
A great introduction to SLR photography and the D80.......2007-03-16
Having read the other reviews I was a little worried about the quality of this product, however I have to say I was impressed. Yes the book is printed in black and white but the paper and print quality is good. Everything is in colour on the electronic version, but I bought this to learn more about the D80, and SLR photography in general, and have to say I've not bothered too much with this. The important thing is that it details all the camera's functions and explains how to take good shots rather then just showing you what nice shots look like.

Book Description
Digital photography has arrived once and for all. No longer do photographers have to be defensive because they prefer digital. Thanks to new technologies, digital cameras at all ends of the price spectrum can rival their film counterparts. If you have shifted from traditional to digital photography, and need to know what's different about shooting digital, this is the book for you. Now in its third edition, this bestseller has been fine-tuned and updated to provide you with the most current information on today's cameras that you'll find anywhere. Whether you're new to photography, or new to digital photography, you'll learn how to take the best possible shots. Even though your camera may pack an image sensor instead of film, taking good pictures still involves understanding apertures, shutter speeds, and metering techniques, as well as a few other issues that film shooters don't face. Fortunately, digital cameras also provide some unique tools to help you get the shot right the first time. Covering everything from the inner workings of your camera to the subtle intricacies of your image editing software, the book is divided into four sections. The first section provides a basic technical foundation that will prepare you for the rest of the book. It details the basics of how digital cameras work and gives you a quick photography primer. The second part explores everything you need to know to make an informed decision about which camera, computer, and software is right for you. In section three, you'll progress to the nitty gritty of shooting, including metering, choosing the right exposure, using histograms, flash photography, and much more. In the final section, you'll learn about digital editing and correction techniques, along with the various methods for outputting your images (print and electronic). If you're new to photography, you'll learn the basic theory that photographers have studied for decades, as well as the latest tools and techniques mad

Unlike so many biographies of dance maestros, Merce Cunningham: Fifty Years offers no litany of substance or psychological abuse. The volume, assembled by the archivist of Merce Cunningham's world-renowned U.S. company, records and analyzes Cunningham's work process and documents the provenance of his modern dance classics. Heavily spiced with biographical detail, Merce Cunningham packages the choreographer's life story in a lovely design that respects his whole body and conveys a rare sense of movement in its mass of still photos.
Book Description
Merce Cunningham celebrates the career of one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, from his first innovative and explosive solo dances to the present. This unique book incorporates images of performances by many world-renowned photographers, including Imogen Cunningham, Barbara Morgan, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Hujar, and Arnold Eagle.

Book Description
This brief text is designed to help both beginning and advanced students of photography better develop and articulate thoughtful criticism. Organized around the major activities of criticism (describing, interpreting, evaluating, and theorizing), Criticizing Photographs provides a clear framework and vocabulary for students' critical skill development. The fourth edition includes new black and white and color images, updated commentary, a completely revised chapter on theory that offers a broad discussion of digital images, and an expanded chapter eight on studio critiques and writing about photographs, plus examples of student writing and critique.

Yecch!.......2007-05-20
I am sorry I bought this book. It was written by a college professor for students, readers that have no choice but to buy the book, and it reads that way. The author does not use his own vision and voice to criticize and to explain criticism but instead relies on a survey of methods used by critics. The writing was wooden, and the book had an overwhelming emphasis on staged, "arty" photographs. I could not bring myself to finish this book and have given it to my local library for their book sale.
Important Book.......2005-08-23
Criticizing Photographs remains one of the most important books in the field, and Barrett has updated the text with new photos to discuss. His new editions include worthy changes and are not ploys to sell new copies. I have used his books for years in an advanced photography college class.

Customer Reviews:
Grat book for Grecco's insight.......2007-06-18
Love the book. It is very helpful to read the authors ideas behind the actual photo. The book is not a recipe for shooting styles, but is is helpful knowing the mindset behind the photos that we see.
I was hoping for a bit more of 'how'.......2007-03-16
This book is another artsy treatment of lighting that talks more about the art of lighting. He assumes you know how to do most of the technical lighting stuff.
While he does show a 'wire drawing' of some setups it does not go very deep into the technical at all. I was hoping for a bit more 'hands on' or 'how to set up' information. If you want to be inspired, maybe this is your book. If you are looking for instruction, look elsewhere. My copy will be up in the used book section.
excelent photos and prints, inspiring text.......2007-03-08
Wonderfull book with great pictures and first quality prints. In terms of didactic value it has easy to read diagrams for a portion of the photos and a writing more focused on what was important in the making of the picture rather than only technical jargon.
Superb guidence........2007-02-18
This is truly a good book. Michael Grecco shares secrects and know how that others try to keep to them selves. Weather you like the photographic style of Michael I belive that other photographers from almost all skill levels will gain from reading this book. A superb inspiration for all...
Fantastic...a wealth of information.......2007-01-21
This book is great for learning conventional and unconventional lighting methods. Most setups is explained-not only how the lights were positioned, but why, and the circumstances surrounding the choices. I would recommend it to anyone.

Book Description
Sammy Davis Jr.—iconic, legendary, in a word, classic. While the world has long known of Davis's unparalleled abilities to sing, dance, and act, only his closest friends and associates knew of his amazing talent and passion for photography. Now, in this collection of never-before-seen photos, Burt Boyar, Davis's longtime friend, exposes these memorable images for generations of his fans, portraying a side of Davis that has long remained a secret to the world at large. Here are Davis's candid shots including his closest friends—Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Sean Connery, and Paul Newman—not to mention scores of the twentieth century's biggest stars captured at their most casual and revealing moments.
But beneath this public veneer is also a strikingly private side of Davis, one that gives a glimpse into his difficult past and long road to success. Tracing Davis from his humble origins, the moments captured here demonstrate the struggle that he faced as an African-American performer during racially divided times and show the difficulties of being one of the country's most revered celebrities when his mere presence signaled the changes taking shape across America.
Accompanying these unforgettable images are Boyar's intimate remembrances of Davis, as he gives a history and a context for many of Davis's striking photographs. Together with the photos, Boyar's words offer a side of the performer far removed from his Rat Pack persona—one that is at once touching and fascinating.
Customer Reviews:
For Photograghy Fans Too!.......2007-06-22
I originally picked up this book as a curiosity and found its links to a bygone era utterly fascinating. The subject matter, i.e., rat pack photos were wonderful but the photographic mastery of Davis Jr. is, I think, equally as stunning. A look into Davis Jr.'s remarkable life is given by him in the way, like other great photographers, he insightfully choses to document and communicate with his subjects through the lens. Again, like many great photographers, the images are powerful and soft, crisp and dazzling. More talent revealed from a man who had more in his baby finger than most of us have coursing through our entire bodies.
Bravo. Well done.
An excellent "coffee table" book that graphically recalls the fifties and sixties, and the hedonistic style of the Rat Pack and Sammy's many friends and colleagues. Beautifully captures the mood and style of the period.
Great photos complement this wonderfully written book!.......2007-04-21
An extremely fun book that reminds the reader of a very happy period of US entertainment history (including old Hollywood, the Rat Pack, and more). Lets the reader see Sammy's world from the camera's view, and what a great world it must have been. Boyer is a talented writer and put together a fabulous collection of photos. A perfect book for the coffee table that includes some great stories to go with the rare photos. A must have for any fan of mid-century Hollywood.
wonderful photos!.......2007-04-12
Sammy was exceptional in every way, from his fabulous talent on. These photos express it all. A great collectors item!
Sammy Davis book is a real winner!.......2007-04-11
Fantastic never-before-seen photos in a real, solid coffee-table-type book. It's actually an art treasure. Everybody who sees it has to pick it up (but hopefully they don't have a bad back...).
