Book Description

In the richest neighborhood of Minneapolis, two elderly women lie murdered in their home, killed with a pipe, the rooms tossed, only small items stolen. It is clearly the random work of someone looking for money to buy drugs. But as Davenport looks more closely, he begins to wonder whether the items are actually so small and the victims so random-if there might not be some invisible agenda at work here. Gradually, a pattern begins to emerge, and it leads him to . . . certainly nothing he ever expected. Which is too bad, because the killers-and, yes, there is more than one of them-the killers are expecting him. Brilliantly suspenseful, filled with rich characterization and exciting drama, Invisible Prey is further proof that Sandford is in a class of his own.

4 out of 5 stars Another Prey, still good reads!.......2007-07-02

Sanford's reliance on titles with the word "Prey" is now becoming very confusing. Two word titles where one is always repeated tend to confuse even the avid fan. Occasionally a previously read "Prey" novel may be picked up expecting a new story.

That said, Lucas Davenport is still a great character, and Sanford is a competent writer with a flexible style that keeps the reader guessing. Solid plotting and interesting villians sustain the series and have the avid fan waiting impatiently for the next installment.

In this one a series of seemingly unrelated murders slowly become an obsession for Lucas Davenport, and the fact that each murder is done in a distinctly different manner makes the job of solving them vastly more complicated and difficult that it at first appears. Strong plotting and a master at the mystery/thriller genre gives "Invisible Prey" solid legs that carry it to a satisfying conclusion. A must read for Sanford fans, and a great place to start for the newbie.

4 out of 5 stars Invisible Prey.......2007-06-30

Read it in a day. Worth waiting for. Love this series. Lucas is aging like fine wine.

3 out of 5 stars Characters Were Right--Who Cares!.......2007-06-29

Never really got into the story. The murder motivation was weak and for some reason I never felt anything special for the victims. Even the author states the case when he says that the death of old people is just not interesting (sorry..do not mean to be callous).

I do not mean to imply that Sandford has sunk to the Patterson level and I love this series, but I thought this book was a little lame. The proof...it took me more than a week to read it and I was not looking forward to reading when I had the chance.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good - Not His Best.......2007-06-27

As with all his Prey novels, John Sandford keeps the readers riveted to the exploits of Lucas Davenport. Invisible Prey is a good story, of course, but it's not one of the best in the Prey series. I think it lacked a little of the suspense. I found myself missing Sloan, who, of course, retired to open his bar. With Sloan's retirement, maybe Sandford can bring back Del a little more.

Davenport fans will like the book... just not as much as some of the others in the Prey series.

3 out of 5 stars Lucas Davenport Has Lost His Edge.......2007-06-27

Invisible Prey was just not up to the rest of the Davenport character series. He somehow has become very tame. Much too nice a character now.

"Judy can pat the bunny. Now YOU pat the bunny." Sound familiar? Pat the Bunny is a part of childhood, as soothing as cocoa and animal crackers. Dorothy Kunhardt's interactive book for babies and toddlers was one of the first of its kind when it was published in 1940, and it has since sold over six million copies. We pat the soft fur of the bunny, play peek-a-boo, look in the mirror, and then do it all over again. (And again and again and again.) After you Pat the Bunny with your baby, why not Pat the Cat and Pat the Dog? These two sequels were written by Edith Kunhardt, the daughter of the author of the original book. Both use the same tried-and-true Pat the Bunny format: sturdy cardboard pages with eight activities that wee ones can explore, from sniffing some brownies, to squeaking a teddy bear, to unfastening Grandma's tennis shoe. The simple line drawings and pastel colors don't do much for adults, but somehow they are just right for babies. This boxed set is a fine choice for a baby gift or first birthday present, and a lifesaver on a long car trip. (Baby to preschool) --Marcie Bovetz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my daughter likes this one better than the modern versions.......2007-06-09

My 2 year old daughter has so many books which incorporate different textures to touch and flaps to lift and look underneath. When her Grandad gave her this book I thought that I would appreciate it more than her because of the sentimental value of it being such an old book. I thought my daughter would be less interested because it doesn't have the flashy colourful pictures of her more modern books.

I was so wrong. Out of all her touch and feel books, it is repeatedly this one that she looks for in her book box.

I think the difference with this book, and no doubt why it has been loved by so many generations, is that my daughter doesn't just touch - she actively joins in a whole range of activities with the children in the story. She strokes the bunny, plays peek-a-boo, smells the (very perfumed!) flowers, reads the book, looks in the mirror, and her favourites - stroking Daddy's scratchy face and putting on Mummy's ring. It is a story about child's play and a child's view of the world, and the not so flashy drawings do in fact add to that.

5 out of 5 stars Kids love it!.......2007-06-08

Now there are a bunch of touch/feel books out there, so they may be more appealing. I DO know that, when our kids were little (long ago), this was one of the few out there and it was universally loved by them and many of their friends. That said, I opt to send what I KNOW to be a home run to kids now.

5 out of 5 stars A must . . ........2007-05-14

This unpretentious little book is a must for every new baby. It is so simple and so accessible to the baby that it never fails to become the baby's first favorite. Buy it - the baby will love it.

3 out of 5 stars Both my children loved this book.......2007-04-26

My three year old still reads his copy that he got when he was a baby. My second baby received one when she was 8 months and also loves it. I just wish they were more sturdy. It's a wonderful book but my kids are a bit rough and have torn it to shreds. They have other touch and feel/lift the flap books that are much more sturdy. I think they should keep the storyline but re-design the construction.

2 out of 5 stars Son shows no interest.......2007-04-26

Got this book for my son when he was about 11 months old. He was mildly interested the first couple of times but, has shown little to no interest since. I should have had him check out a copy in a book store first. The artwork seems a bit dated and the colors lacks any vibrancy (is that a word?).

Book Description

The organization of letters on a blank sheet -- or screen -- is the most basic challenge facing anyone who practices design. What type of font to use? How big? How should those letters, words, and paragraphs be aligned, spaced, ordered, shaped, and otherwise manipulated? In this groundbreaking new primer, leading design educator and historian Ellen Lupton provides clear and concise guidance for anyone learning or brushing up on their typographic skills.
Thinking with Type is divided into three sections: letter, text, and grid. Each section begins with an easy-to-grasp essay that reviews historical, technological, and theoretical concepts, and is then followed by a set of practical exercises that bring the material covered to life. Sections conclude with examples of work by leading practitioners that demonstrate creative possibilities (along with some classic no-no's to avoid).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to type.......2007-06-30

To quote Ellen Lupton: "There is no playbook that assigns fixed meaning or function every typeface; each designer must confront the library of possibilities in light of a project's unique circumstance." Unfortunately, this seem too bit true, and this book is no such playbook. The author provides a brief history of the trade, and a nice overview of some of the basics of type, but I was left wanting for more. The book is nicely illustrated, and still remains among one of the better ones on the subject, but there is room for improvement.

4 out of 5 stars nice book.......2007-06-23

This is just another great type book - beautifully designed and a great guide for anyone with an interest in the subject matter

5 out of 5 stars easy read.......2007-05-20

this book is super informative and an easy read...what more could you
want. It also looks great and has wonderfull images and examples.
It gives some history of typefaces which is nice but not an overwhelming amount. I am halfway through the book and absolutely love it so far!

5 out of 5 stars Top.......2007-05-07

This book is excellent.

I am a design student, and bought "Thinking with Type" prior to the first of two classes about type, in the hope that I would get excited about what seemed to me to be a very dull subject. I made a great decision. "Thinking with Type" got me into type. This is a very well written book. I read and enjoyed it from cover to cover in one day, and refer to it regularly.

If you want to get a handle on type, buy this book, it's a great read, and you'll learn lots about type.

5 out of 5 stars A really good book on improving your use of font.......2007-04-28

Great book. If you are graphic designer, you can never have too much knowledge in regards to font use. And this book delivers, giving great advice, and history of fonts.

If you've ever wondered why the latest fad diet doesn't work for you... well, there are lots of reasons, mostly the fact that it's a fad diet. But it could also be that you're the wrong blood type for the kinds of foods the diet recommends. Peter D'Adamo makes a persuasive argument that your blood type is an evolutionary marker that tells you which foods you'll process best, and which will be useless calories. He covers the entire range for each of the four blood types, from entrées to condiments and seasonings, and also makes type-specific exercise and lifestyle recommendations.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

This abridged audiobook introduces Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo's revolutionary approach to dieting based on the connection between blood type and health. Read by audio pro Polly Adams, D'Adamo's bestseller details how different foods affect specific blood types both positively and negatively. We learn that "pastas made from buckwheat are better tolerated for Type Os," and that type As should eliminate all meat from their diet to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Adams blends an efficient, no-nonsense delivery and warm tones that may remind some of a favorite talk-radio personality. And considering the important subject matter, listeners will appreciate all of these qualities. While some dieters may find the suggestions too progressive--it's recommended that women with a history of breast cancer in their family introduce snails into their diet--this is a beneficial three-hour investment for dieters seeking alternative nutritional plans. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Cate Bick

1 out of 5 stars Blood Hype Diet.......2007-06-16

There is no reasonable scientific basis for the claim that blood type has anything to do with one's proper diet. D'Adamo has never done a controlled study on blood type diets. His assertions are almost completely anecdotal.

I did not have a profound experience utilizing this booklet and gave the booklet away after reading it. It's a skinny little booklet with a little information. In hindsight, I do not recommend this booklet. My recommendation is for the Atkin's book, New Diet Revolution, a great resource for eating healthy and is loaded with good practical information.

This is a condensed summary of foods for my blood type. Its small and fits into my purse just fine. I use it for grocery shopping and eating out. The more I use it the better I'm getting and learning/memorizing my plan. I can't believe the improvement this info has brought me as far as my arthritis and alergys go.

The information is most insightful, although troubling. Just when you think something is or maybe good for you, it's time to think again. It has been difficult to discover that the tastes of childhood or those that I have favored over the years could be a hinderance due to the Blood type diet. Thank you.

    Why We Love Harry
    Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

    * Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
    * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
    * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
    * Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

    * The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
    * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
    * The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

    * Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
    * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
    * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
    * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
    * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

    * Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
    * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
    * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
    * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    * Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
    * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
    * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
    * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
    * Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

    * The introduction of the Horcrux.
    * Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition." Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur's answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
    * Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling's most ingenious inventions.
    * Fred and George Weasley's Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
    * Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
    * The effects of Felix Felicis.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I'm sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling

    Did You Know?

The Little White Horse was J.K. Rowling's favorite book as a child. Jane Austen is Rowling's favorite author. Roddy Doyle is Rowling's favorite living writer.

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

Does your spouse's need to alphabetically organize books on the shelves puzzle you? Do your boss's tsunami-like moods leave you exasperated? Do your child's constant questions make you batty? If you've ever wanted to change your mate, your coworkers, or a family member, then "Put down your chisel," advise David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates in this book of personality types. We are different for a reason, and that reason is probably more good than bad. Keirsey and Bates believe that not only is it impossible to truly change others (which they call embarking on a "Pygmalion project"), it's much more important to understand and affirm differences. Sounds easier than it is, you might say. Well, this book is a guide for putting an end to the Pygmalion projects in your life and starting on the path to acceptance.

For anyone acquainted with the ubiquitous Myers-Briggs personality test, Please Understand Me will be familiar territory--but gone over with a fine-toothed comb. And for the uninitiated, this book will be a quick introduction to personality typing the Myers-Briggs way--with a Jungian accent. After presenting a brief rundown of 20th-century psychology movements, Keirsey and Bates encourage you to take the 70-question "Keirsey Temperament Sorter," a sort of mini-Myers-Briggs test that places you in 1 of 16 personality types. Like the Myers-Briggs system, this test sorts your personality into groups of extraversion/introversion (E/I), sensation/intuition (S/N), thinking/feeling (T/F), and perceiving/judging (P/J). Unlike the Myers-Briggs system, Please Understand Me also presents four easy-to-remember temperament types--Dionysian (freedom first), Epimethean (wants to be useful), Promethean (desires power), and Apollonian (searches for self)--that underlie the 16 possible personalities identified by the test. The book then delves into a detailed analysis of each type, with sections on mates, children, and leaders. An appendix paints portraits of the 16 possible personality types.

Unless you're already a true personality-typing devotee, this book may seem a little esoteric, especially the somewhat "in" references to psychological theory that few laypeople will be likely to understand. But give it a chance and you may find that you'll begin to understand why you always know where to find Anna Karenina on the shelf (you have an ESTJ husband), why your boss is sarcastic one day and praises your achievements the next (she's an NF), and why knowing the reason that the sun comes up in the same place every day is important to your little one (he's Promethean). You may even find that once you accept quirks and ticks in others, they will understand you a little better, too. --Stefanie Durbin

4 out of 5 stars The Advantages of Keirsey versus MBTI.......2007-01-25

Here finally is a man to bring order to the rather chaotic viewpoints of Isabel Myers-Briggs. "Please Understand Me" is an excellent work which goes into general explanations of personality type and moves to more specific, something which I find frankly lacking in many resource books for MBTI. The classification of typology into four categories is something which makes absolute sense given the processing style of the sixteen types: SP Artisans (the doers), SJ Guardians (the conservationists), NF Idealists (the identity seekers), and NT Rationals (the knowledge seekers).

The benefits of breaking down personality into general types cannot be understated; as a reader of MBTI for several years it was next to impossible to attempt to sit down with a person and attempt to explain how preference dominates our lives-- there were simply too many ulterior motives to explore and not enough framework to do it in. I would often score as an XNTX in MBTI with definite leanings towards ENTP, a concept impossible to explain to someone (say a concrete thinker) who is new to the ideas proposed by the CPP. Explaining motivation, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. It is far easier for a concrete thinker to state "I am hungry, therefore I might want to eat" than "if an ESFJ were hungry, they might... as opposed to an ISFJ, whose introverted behavior will...."

Keirsey's methodology further lends itself to the reason I became interested in personality type: communication styles between types and the need for the human brain to bias itself towards the world without, in other words, the "Pygmalion Project." This concept is an astounding and practical look at how the mind seeks commonality with its environment (with the cost being the individuality of the persons therein) and explains in honest, easy to understand terms why we try so hard to imprint ourselves into our mates, our children, and the people around us.

This book would have gotten a five star rating had it not been for the fact that "Please Understand Me II" is out and contains all of the information contained within this book plus more detailed explanations of functionality. I would recommend that anyone with an interest in MBTI start off with this one, though; Keirsey is NOT MBTI even though they have a common language.

I read the book over two days. The information is presented very well and in an understandable manner. It sets the stage for the seriousness of the disease but also gets you in a position to deal with it as best as you can. So far, I have liked this book the most of the diabetes related material I have ordered and highly recommend this. This should be the book you get from your doctor or endocrinologist with the diagnosis.

This lovely, well-written book is concerned foremost with creating beautiful typography and is essential for professionals who regularly work with typographic designs. Author Robert Bringhurst writes about designing with the correct typeface; striving for rhythm, proportion, and harmony; choosing and combining type; designing pages; using section heads, subheads, footnotes, and tables; applying kerning and other type adjustments to improve legibility; and adding special characters, including punctuation and diacritical marks. The Elements of Typographic Style teaches the history of and the artistic and practical perspectives on a variety of type families that are available in Europe and America today.

The last section of the book classifies and displays many type families, offers a glossary of typography terms, and lists type designers and type foundries. The book briefly mentions digital typography, but otherwise ignores it, focusing instead on general typography and page- and type-design issues. Its examples include text in a variety of languages--including English, Russian, German, and Greek--which is particularly helpful if your work has a multinational focus.

    Book Description

Renowned typographer and poet Robert Bringhurst brings clarity to the art of typography with this masterful style guide. Combining the practical, theoretical, and historical, this edition is completely updated, with a thorough exploration of the newest innovations in intelligent font technology, and is a must-have for graphic artists, editors, or anyone working with the printed page using digital or traditional methods.

    4 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2007-05-21

As a designer, you can't argue the value of having this book as a resource. Reading through it can be heavy at times but the amount of great information far outweighs anything negative you could say. It's become an important part of my collection and has given me a great perspective when approaching any projects that need a typographic punch. Well worth a purchase and will be for some time.

    2 out of 5 stars Hard Read.......2007-05-12

This boks is considered a must buy book for any one in typography or graphic design. I do not enjoy it one bit. It is a hard read, and it loses my interest. It is not good for reference at all and because the paragraphs are so long winded that you could not find what you were looking for. This may be a book more for the advanced typographer or designer, definatly not for a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Great Typography book -A Must for serious designers!.......2007-04-03

From A to Z, this book covers all aspects of typography. If you thought you knew a lot about fonts, their history, usage, manipulation and every aspect -this book will show you how much you really don't know. A definite must read for the serious type nut.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-03-24

Great reference manual for years to come. I REALLY don't like the design of the cover, though; it was the weakest design out of everything else in the book. Far weaker than the perfect layout of every page inside - even the paper is top notch. GET THIS BOOK. I've yet to come across another so well put together, and such a joy to read.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-03-19

A really useful and interesting book for every person interested on typography and book editing. Really well writed and presented. Thanks!

For over 10 years Do What You Are has helped hundreds of thousands of people find the job that suits their personality type best. It lists the wide array of occupations that are popular with your personality type, including todays hottest career tracks in growth areas such as e-commerce, biotechnology, new media, and telecommunications. Throughout, the authors provide savvy career advice and highlight the strengths and pitfalls of each personality type with real-life examples.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Learn about yourself with insightful tools.......2007-04-27

I've taken personality tests before as part of my college entrance exam and for work and to be honest most were outdated, general and at times mind-boggling. Authors Paul Tieger and Barbara Barron put a stop to these confusing tests as they pool their years of expertise and share their knowledge in their revised and updated, Do What You Are.

Readers will walk away with a thorough understanding of the sixteen personality types and correlating job fields that will enable readers to preview recommended career choices and learn how these personality types apply to their field of choice.

As I read Do What You Are I especially enjoyed one area: Part Two: The Formula for Career Satisfaction. In this section of the book the authors explain that while our basic personality type doesn't change, the ability to access all type preferences does change, and it is in this process, which happens naturally, that most of us allow ourselves the opportunity to become a well-rounded person. Simply stated, we age, experience life, and mature.

Another key element is realizing that we may choose jobs based on pressure. As the authors state, "Pressure to be what you aren't can cause lifelong confusion. If you are obliged to fit into a certain group mentality that really doesn't suit you (this could be a family dynamic, a school or community setting or a professional environment), you may end up denying your true nature and not enjoying your required role." How many of us have fallen into that trap? Our parents want us to be doctors or lawyers yet we yearn to be an architect so we spend years in jobs we hate to gain acceptance from those we love.

All in all, Do What You Are is an excellent reference tool that can be used over and over, year after year. So whether you're getting ready to graduate high school and are trying to figure out what to study or whether you're contemplating a job change, I think you'll find every aspect of this book helpful and insightful.

Armchair Interviews says: Helpful information for many aspects of your life.

5 out of 5 stars A ray of hope in the darkness of chaos..........2007-04-21

An invaluable guide, written in an easy to understand and conversational style. I have used this book often - for myself and also to guide others. It helps to know your type before hand - however - even if you dont, the book will help you figure it out.

The tips the authors have given on ascertaining the personality type are extremely useful: "if you are not sure how to answer or make a choice - ask yourself what would you rather do or be." This helps you get off the hook - when you struggle with I think I am an 'I', but behavior wise it feels like an 'E'. This they have done for each of the 4 dimensions.

I have read several books on MBTI; however - found this one to be of the most value in identifying natural fit careers as part of my coaching work.

Very highly recommended - read it early!

    4 out of 5 stars Advisable information.......2007-04-18

Well this book is good but not good enough. Because it truly puts you in a category and provides you suitable careers according to your personality type, i.e., what careers you'd possibly find enjoyable based on the functioning of your brain.

But each type offers varied fields of career. For example, as in my INFP type, you could be an actor as well as a psychological counselor. That means you have to pounder into what your abilities and interests are before you can find the right career.

Thus I worked with "Discover What You Are Best At" by Linda Gale, which shows your aptitudes(abilities) to narrow the focus. And now I've found the right direction thanks to both books.

5 out of 5 stars My First Choice for Career and Self Development Counseling.......2007-04-15

I borrowed the 2001 edition of this book from the library and was so impressed I purchased the 2007 edition as soon as it was released. I strongly recommend you purchase this book if you want to understand yourself and/or others better.

Readers of this book will have the opportunity to understand:

    1. That there are others like the reader, and that what may seem like a character "flaw" of the reader is a totally normal way for the reader to behave. This alone can improve one's self esteem.
    2. That there are four different types of temperament and how the temperament impacts relationships and decision-making.
    3. Their own "Personality Type's" strengths and some problem areas.
    4. Why the reader, and others, do things the way they do.
    5. How things change as we grow older.

The authors list 10 specific situations that "define" what could be the "ultimate" job for each Personality Type. I have read these 10 situations to a number of high school students and young adults with differing types and in each case the person said, "yes - a job like that would be fantastic".

Then the book presents a number of occupations that the person might find enjoyable, gives suggestions on how the person should "Customize Your Job Search" (different for each type of person), various Pathways to Success, and Possible Pitfalls of the type.

They then have a chapter on "Putting It All Together" which has "Ten Steps to Creating a Personal Career Plan," complete with questions and blanks for the reader to complete.

This is a book that is worth buying and keeping on the shelf, after you have used it, for reference as you deal with others and have to deal with situations where understanding yourself and others might result in a better outcome than if you don't understand yourself and the people you are interacting with.

This book will help the reader, or the reader's friends, children, or relatives understand themselves and in fact enables them to improve their decision making process.

This book is not intended to be the final step in finding a career or job, but it is the best place I know of to start.

I have found it useful to use this book along with:

    1. Nurture by Nature: How to Raise Happy, Healthy, Responsible Children Through the Insights of Personality Type to help myself and parents understand how to best deal with their children and to help the children to better understand themselves, and

    2. Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type to better understand how to improve my interaction with the people I am counseling. I understand that this is a book designed to deal with, how shall I say it, possibly romantic relationships, but I have found that it helps me understand how my type can interact most productively with other types. I read the appropriate section just before having a meeting with a student and the student's mother and the meeting went much better than my previous meetings and I could clearly see how changes I made, in response to reading just two short sections of this book, really made a difference.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-04-09

Choosing a career based on personality type is not a new concept; in fact, the first edition of DO WHAT YOU ARE was released in 1992 (and I can actually remember reading it when I was a junior in high school). In this, the fourth edition, hopefully even more teens will be exposed to this great resource.

The authors, both experts in personality type and career development, put forth the idea that choosing a career path based on your individual personality will be beneficial to your success. For those worried that discovering your personality type is a difficult process, don't despair, because the authors make it quite easy.

There are four dimensions to personality type:

Whether you are extroverted or introverted.
Whether you notice things by sensing or intuition.
Whether you make decisions by thinking or feeling.
Whether you prefer to live by judging or perceiving.

Once you've discovered the answer to each of these four questions, you'll be able to discover which of the sixteen possible personality types you fall into. Once you do, you can quickly skip to the relevant section in the book.

In my case, my personality is ESTJ - or extroverted, sensing, thinking, judging. According to the authors of DO WHAT YOU ARE, my strengths lie in organization, being objective, working alone, and being a good decision maker. My weaknesses are also outlined, and include impatience with those who don't follow procedures, a tendency to overrun people, and difficulty listening to opposing viewpoints. Some suggestions for careers, based on my personality type, are as a teacher, government employee, sales, supervisor, or a manager.

Of course the above is not a full list of the strengths, weaknesses, or recommended career choices for those whose personality type is ESTJ - the above is merely a sampling. But I can say with truth that DO WHAT YOU ARE can be a great resource for those beginning their search for a career choice. I can agree that ESTJ is definitely my personality type (faults and all!) and have no doubt that this book has the power to help everyone looking to correctly match their strengths to the perfect career.
