5 out of 5 stars What an utterly FANTASTIC book!!!!.......2007-03-24

Wow! Forget for a moment that he was in all of the Beatles films. Victor Spinetti's life on it's own makes a great read! From his touching and poignant childhood through to his film, television and theatre work, Victor Spinetti has led a life I only WISH that I had one third of! The 'backstage' stories alone are worth the price of the book. He is very funny and 'up front' in many of his stories. The Princess Margaret story alone had me laughing out loud. But he is also very discreet and in the fashion of a true gentleman, will only give you as much as you need to know in some cases.

What class! What style! If only I could sit next to him in a bar and hear him tell these stories first hand. But this is the next best thing!!

Throughout World War II, cartoonist Bill Mauldin documented the adventures and misadventures of dogfaces Willie and Joe, symbols of the hard-pressed infantry, "the group which gives more and gets less than anybody else." In Up Front, recently reissued as a 50th-anniversary volume, Mauldin joins an absorbing narrative account of just how hellish combat is to a selection of those cartoons. Reading through this powerful book, one sees why Mauldin, in demythologizing the war, was often accused of undoing the efforts of the morale officers and politicians who assured the home front that our boys were having a fine time of it in Europe. No, Mauldin replied through Willie and Joe, our boys are being maimed and killed every day. For his honesty, the troops loved him -- and Mauldin loved them= back.

Book Description

The 1945 classic book of text and drawings with a spectacular foreword by Stephen E. Ambrose.

Up Front is one of the most famous books to emerge from the Second World War and remains an icon of the "greatest generation." In his drawings of the infantry dogfaces Willie and Joe, done while he himself fought in campaigns in Sicily and Italy, Bill Mauldin created the immortal archetypes of the American fighting man. He knew, as one who had been on the front lines and in the trenches, that Willie and Joe—with their unshaven faces, their gallows humor, their fortitude, and their dislike of privilege and cant—exemplify something enduring and noble about Americans at war. Up Front is a vivid piece of living history and a potent reminder of the sacrifices of the men who fought and won our greatest war.

What Bill maudlin said about the attitudes of combat soldiers in WWll still resonates today with todays generation fighting for us today during the global war on terrror.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2007-04-27

I have an orignal edition that I got from Grandafather who, although he wasn't an infantryman, still saw the dirty side of the war in Europe. Growing up with this book allowed to me to see the war with far more clarity than I could have through John Wayne movies. Now that I'm older and studying diplomatic history Mauldin's wonderul cartoons and stories keep the human side of history front and center. I'll always treasure my copy for both the value of its cartoons and the tie it represents to a fading generation.

5 out of 5 stars There's Nothing Funny About a Screaming Memee.......2006-07-28

This is a nice book about Bill Mauldin's experience in Europe, written in Europe during World War II. He spent some time in the infantry, I gather, but spent a lot more time drawing cartoons, first for a regimental paper and then for "Stars and Stripes." The gritty cartoons showed how Mauldin viewed the war. Rubble was strewn everywhere like it was rubble, uniforms were torn and rumpled and modified. Only the best of his WWII cartoons make the cut in this book. If you just want the cartoons, then pick up Bill Mauldin's Army, which also includes the demobilization process. However, the text in Up Front is what makes this book worth picking up.

Mauldin talks about his experiences, what it was like at Anzio, how much combat medics were appreciated, how people in the rear absconded with gear, and so on. These stories are all very similar to stories from the Pacific theater, except Mauldin also describes how the experiences affected his cartoons. I'm not sure why it isn't as bloody as the Marine memoirs With the Old Breed and Goodbye, Darkness, whether it's military censors or temporal proximity or the European theater, but you never get the feel of the meat grinder that makes the others so inspiring.

I'll end by paraphrasing what I found to be the funniest line in the book:

I never drew a cartoon about a screaming memee.

There's nothing funny about a screaming memee.

5 out of 5 stars Mauldin's Cartoons Are Timeless.......2006-04-21

It's amazing how Mauldin's cartoons, which were written 60 years ago, could have just as easily been written about American soldiers today.

Up Front was given to me by my grandfather on the occasion of my commission in the army. I think he hit the nail on the head with the inscription: "Enjoy the book. You will find it both humorous and instructional. Good fortune when you have to command your own Willie & Joes."

This book will be enjoyed by anyone who has ever spent a few years in the army because they will see some of themselves and their buddies in Willie and Joe.

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute to World War II Veterans.......2005-11-12

At 23 years old, Pulitzer-Prize winning Cartoonist, Bill Mauldin, experienced first hand, the ravages of World War II. His two archetypes, Willie and Joe, the epitome of the infantryman, brought the war experience back home for America to read and see. While taking an American history class in junior high, I recall the cartoon of Willie and Joe bound to the pages of my textbook in the chapter discussing WWII and the home front. Then years laters while taking a graduate course about the two World Wars and Literature, one of my reading assignments was to read Mauldin's UP Front.

Mauldin exposes his experience as well as World War II soldiers' experience in UP FRONT. His eye as an artist and his unforgettable cartoons provide an exceptional accompaniment to his narration about the war. The book was originally published in 1945, and takes an honest and gritty account of the war. In reference to how soldiers felt about the war, Mauldin states: "All he knows is that he is expected to make great sacrifices for little compensation, and he must make those sacrifices whether he likes it or not (128)."

Mauldin's depiction of WWII will add another dimension to the combatant aspect of the war. He shows how it felt to be in the trenches - dogface with all the mud and the gunk, but always there with a sense of hope for the end of the war.

I first heard Sara Holbrook present her poetry at a teacher conference in Orlando, Florida. She performed (yes, performed, not simply read) a few of her "kid" poems, which we all loved. Sara closed with "Chicks Up Front", the title poem, and I was moved to goosebumps and tears. I have since had the fortune of hearing her perform the poem many times, and it never loses its ability to grab me. I have read the book at least four times, and each time a poem speaks to me and makes me smile for a different reason. I have this book in my classroom, and I have purchased copies for all the members of my family.

So, as i sit in creative writing class my teacher pulls out a book. This book is called "Girls Up Front." Not thinking much of it i still scribble thoughts in my notebook, she yells to me telling my this will interest me. Sure I thought. I began to listen. The words flow from Sara Holbrook's pen to paper to my heart. She speaks the trusth in every piece. There are many different levels to each of her pieces. And honestly i was captivated by evey poem in the begining. Then it was almost like the book changed and her style changed. It became something unlike the first six pieces or so. Then it changed back to the way it was in the begining. Simple telling it how it is writing. I'm 17 years old and a women almost triple my age gave me the book to read and we both connected with the piece. On the same level and a different one. It is definatly worth your money.

He was the ultimate liberal cartoonist, a now extinct breed who knew how to afflict the comfortable, comfort the afflicted and always needle the pomposity of the smug Eastablishment.

Strangely enough by today's standards of spiteful politics and bitter cartoonists, he was always kind.

Mauldin was the best cartoonist of the past century. For years, as editor of a small newspaper, I used his editorial page cartoons which continued to poke fun at the inevitable congruities of life. He was a complete contrast to modern cartoonists who have forgotten the touch of kindness, humility, empathy and sympathy. Mauldin was on the front lines of the bitterest war of the past century; yet, even in his early twenties he realized vast numbers of people on all sides were more victims than perpetrators of evil.

As a product of the Great Depression, Mauldin realized life is a struggle against the fates, whether they be rules, bosses, officers and enemy shells. In recent years, an attitude has developed that our modern unearned luxury is a personal right and anyone or anything that interferes deserves bitter hatred, vilification and attack. From Rush Limbaugh to Ann Coulter, political comment is now based on hate instead of intelligence. Mauldin faced dangers and threats greater than they can ever imagine, and never lost his sense of kindly comment on the incongruities of even the toughest challenges.

He's an example of how World War II produced "the greatest generation". These were men and women who could at least smile -- and Mauldin often provided a laugh -- at the hardships they faced. When faced with great danger, brave people find a reason to laugh. Mauldin expressed this courage better than any other cartoonist of World War II. When faced with minor annoyances, spoiled brats find a reason to whine as you can see in the drawings of modern cartoonists.

America has turned from a land that bravely endures hardship into a society that whines, pouts and throws childish temper tantrums over ticky-tocky-tacky trivia.

"Up Front" is a magnificent tribute now, as in 1944, to everyone who endured incredible hardships to preserve freedom. Read the reviews of the reprint edition; they pay just tribute to Mauldin's genius to the relevance to the real maning of war and life in the military. Then, read the book. It will show up the modern whining wimps of war as privileged two-faced twits who don't know how to handle toy soldiers on a bedspread let alone true soldiers in a real war.

This book is a gem. Count yourself lucky there are still old editions available.

        Book Description

When World War II broke out in September 1939, it came as no surprise to the children of Germany: the Nazis had been preparing them for a war ever since they had come to power in 1933. To British children, however, it was an altogether different matter. Children all over Britain were deeply affected by the war: many were separated from their parents by evacuation or bereavement; all had "make do and mend" with clothes and toys; and some even died while contributing to the war effort at home. The author of this book describes what life was like on the Home Front during the war from a child's point of view. His illustrated, descriptive narrative includes details of evacuation, rationing, coping with gas masks and air raids, entertainment in the absence of toys, favorite radio programs and the important - and often dangerous - role of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Interspersed with personal accounts and reminiscences, the book provides a glimpse of how children were affected by the pressures of war and how they coped with the difficulties they faced. A selection of period photographs and ephemera shows children at work and play and is a main feature of the book.

When writer Sara Cameron went on assignment to Colombia to write a UNICEF report about the Children's Movement for Peace to submit to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, she was skeptical: "I didn't believe that children could do anything substantial to help peace." But she was soon convinced by the sincere teen leaders of the movement who had been through hell and lived to tell about it. Colombia is a country that has been torn apart by guerilla warfare, illegal drug trade, and gang violence for more than 40 years. In the late 1990s, guided by civic and religious leaders, the children and teens of Colombia decided to try and do what the adults of their country could not: make peace. Besides writing her report for UNICEF, Cameron collected these first-person accounts of nine young leaders of the movement, all of whose lives have been tainted by violence. Heartbreaking examples include 18-year-old Juan Elias, whose father was murdered right in his own office, and 16-year-old Mayerly, whose best friend was stabbed to death in a gang war. Still, these young leaders--despite threats by armed gangs and extreme poverty--organize peace rallies, speak publicly at schools, and lead workshops for other displaced or abused children. Sad, but ultimately triumphant, these stories will both inspire and shame the teens of First World nations who read them--shame them by showing how much of their lives they take for granted, and inspire them to do more with the resources and relationships they have been blessed with. The book includes an author's note and a list of resources to learn more about the Children's Movement for Peace. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

        Book Description

Through nine intimate first-person narratives, Out of War tells the story of the Children's Movement for Peace, a network of organizations struggling against the forty-year civil war in Colombia. Readers will meet young people like Juan Elias, who decided he could best avenge his father's murder by fighting to end the war; Maritza, who found refuge in the peace movement after her family and friends abandoned her in the communas of Medellin; and Beto, who works for the peace he never had in his abusive home. The voices of these children are raw and real, and their stories are nothing short of inspirational. In 1996, the Children's Movement for Peace helped organize the Children's Mandate, a referendum on children's rights in Colombia. Two million children turned out to vote for their right to peace, sending the Colombian government a powerful message about its inability to control the violence within its borders. Since then, the Movement has worked to help children cope with loss, displacement, poverty, and other effects of the war. It has also taught children how to resolve conflict without fighting. The movement's work is impressive, yet Out of War is really about the individual children who lead the group. Through them, readers will learn not only about the tenuous life of children in Colombia, but about what it means to give back to your community and face adversity with true courage and hope.

3 out of 5 stars Out of War.......2004-05-06

This nonfiction book is a collection of personal accounts of nine children who took one look at their beloved war-torn Columbia, saw how it was affecting the people around them and their families, and walked down the path to the right to live in a peaceful environment.
From each body comes a different voice, a different problem. Even though these nine children live in Columbia, each of them is affected, and how each child chooses to go about solving their problem is different. Some of these children face abuse by their parents or siblings, other face the travesties of watching a loved one being tortured to death by the local gangs.
Through thick and thin these children fight for peace in their country. That's one of the things that make this book a good one. I think that it's really cool how all the children who were involved in the Children's Movement stood up for what they believed in, even though that they knew the dangers of trying to stand up to the dangerous rebels. That takes true courage for kids to take on a cause that involves a whole country.
One of the things that I gained from this book is that I think that American news is drummed up a little too much. All channels like NBC 5 report about what is bad in America because it will sell, and when they report on something good like medicinal breakthroughs, the medicine has all the weird side effects that might possibly kill you. I thought that watching this at 10' o clock was depressing, but then in one child's section I read a description of the news. Basically it showed me how many people had been captured by the rebel gangs, the truly sad part was when the rebels allowed their prisoner's of war to speak on television. I would hate to see one of my loved ones on T.V talking about how he or she was safe, when I could sense that something was really wrong. I believe that is slightly worse then seeing a dead person's fuzzy picture on the news.
Another thing that I gained from Out of War was that we should be grateful that we have a justice system, a constitution, and a police force to protect our government from being ruled by rebel gangs or power hungry dictators. We are also fortunate that our country's government isn't in such disarray like Columbia's.
Do you know what barrio means? It means a district. At the beginning of the book when Juan was talking, I didn't know what that means. So I kept on reading it in context and finally looked it up. Barrio means district. Even though while I was reading the book I may have not know what the word meant, but when I looked it up in a Spanish dictionary, I felt as if Juan was trying to share his culture with me, not just writing to tell a story, but enrich people on their daily use of common words. When Maverly was using Spanish words, I felt I was walking right along side her as she told the story, actually looking through her eyes. Another thing interesting thing about the format was the aftermath written by Sara Cameron, who had taken her time to follow up on these children's lives. It was interesting to me to see how each kid had grown up and how they were still helping the movement in different ways.
If you want to be informed about what is going on in Columbia, and how these nine children walked down the path to peace, then Out of War is the right book for you. Maybe it'll give you the idea to help out a war torn country in the future, or maybe give you the courage to fight against something you think is wrong and have a better solution.

This book confirms Colombia's intimate relationship with war. However, "Out of War; True Stories From the Front Lines," offers a frightening new dimension of the conflict. Author Sara Cameron documents the tragic lifes of young poor Colombians who are disgusted with the violence and seek to reduce the warfare by fostering a better understanding of peace.

On the one hand, this book is uplifting. It is a sparkling display of courage. However, sprinkled throughout nearly each narrative is the reality that death is always present and that the violent actors still continue the pattern of killing unarmed civilians. The reality is so great that not one of the young poor adults that writes a testimony of how the conflict has impacted them dares to point a finger to whom is responsible for the murder and intimidation. All are careful to remain neutral and not trigger the anger of those responsible for the ruthless violence in Colombia.

Hats off to Redepaz(Colombia's Peace Network),UNICEF, The Red Cross and the Catholic Church for nurturing peace among the young. This book also provides useful web sites to learn more about the children's movement for peace in Colombia. Upon completing this book one is filled with pride for the bravery of the young in Colombia. But one is also saddened by the stark reality that the young suffer a great deal. Finally, this book promotes a greater awareness of the children's movement for peace but also drives home the fact that the young are defenseless to the harm of poverty and violence in Colombia.

5 out of 5 stars Child Heroes Reject the Horrors of War.......2001-12-20

Fortunately I did not experience the terror of mass murder, rape and callous torture as a child. For the children of Columbia such experiences are an every day occurrence. The courage of the young people whose stories Cameron relates is extraordinary. How does an ordinary fifteen year old girl rise to become a leader of children in a mass movement to bring peace to a country where war is the norm? How do children as young as eleven overcome their anger and personal pain to tell their fellow sufferers that anger and revenge will not work as well as forgiveness and conciliation?

This true story of The Children's Peace Movement of Columbia makes chilling reading, but it is also inspiring and enriching.

Cameron's simple and eminently readable style allows the children to speak for themselves and she does not fall into the traps of sentimentality or open-mouthed wonder. She allows them to relate their experiences, their failures and successes, to tell of their feelings, their joys, their hopes and their fears, and, most of all, of their overwhelming wish to bring peace to this shattered country.

My hat comes off to Sara Cameron for drawing the attention of the world to the work of these heroic children. I hope that her book will give them a platform from which they can continue to build the peace they so richly deserve.

5 out of 5 stars Important Stories of Peace in the Middle of Violence.......2001-10-21

"Out of War" has some amazing stories of Colombian teenagers who have survived the terrible violence that is tearing their country apart. Juan Elias has to cope with the murder of his father and cousin and the persecution of his family. Wilfrido lives in a town where assassins ride by killing people and armed groups recruit children as soldiers. The gangs that dominate Maritza's community sometimes attract her, but then she tries to make peace between them. This is true of all the young people in the book. They suffer from the violence but then they try to do something about it. Alberto's brother was kidnapped by one of the armed groups but still Alberto, who is only 15 years old, runs peace workshops for kids. He says he is working for forgiveness. He says that it is especially important for people like him who have suffered in the war to forgive because without forgiveness there cannot be peace. There still isn't peace in Colombia but Mayerly (who is 16 and whose best friend was murdered) says that we should never give up on peace, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes, because if you give up how will you ever achieve it. The book is not long. I read it in one go. Once I started reading I couldn't stop. I thought it was one of the most important books I have read, especially now! I recommend it to everyone, whether you are young or old because it can give hope to everyone.
