Book Description
"I have no wish to play the pontificating fool, pretending that I've suddenly come up with the answers to all life's questions. Quite that contrary, I began this book as an exploration, an exercise in self-questing. In other words, I wanted to find out, as I looked back at a long and complicated life, with many twists and turns, how well I've done at measuring up to the values I myself have set."
âSidney Poitier
In this luminous memoir, a true American icon looks back on his celebrated life and career. His body of work is arguably the most morally significant in cinematic history, and the power and influence of that work are indicative of the character of the man behind the many storied roles. Sidney Poitier here explores these elements of character and personal values to take his own measureâas a man, as a husband and a father, and as an actor.
Poitier credits his parents and his childhood on tiny Cat Island in the Bahamas for equipping him with the unflinching sense of right and wrong and of self-worth that he has never surrendered and that have dramatically shaped his world. "In the kind of place where I grew up," recalls Poitier, "what's coming at you is the sound of the sea and the smell of the wind and momma's voice and the voice of your dad and the craziness of your brothers and sisters...and that's it." Without television, radio, and material distractions to obscure what matters most, he could enjoy the simple things, endure the long commitments, and find true meaning in his life.
Poitier was uncompromising as he pursued a personal and public life that would honor his upbringing and the invaluable legacy of his parents. Just a few years after his introduction to indoor plumbing and the automobile, Poitier broke racial barrier after racial barrier to launch a pioneering acting career. Committed to the notion that what one does for a living articulates to who one is, Poitier played only forceful and affecting characters who said something positive, useful, and lasting about the human condition.
Here is Poitier's own introspective look at what has informed his performances and his life. Poitier explores the nature of sacrifice and commitment, price and humility, rage and forgiveness, and paying the price for artistic integrity. What emerges is a picture of a man in the face of limitsâhis own and the world's. A triumph of the spirit, The Measure of a Man captures the essential Poitier.

Hard-Earned Wisdom From a Master of Accomplishment.......2007-07-02
Sidney Poitier exudes dignity, as both an actor and a man. Few are those in Hollywood who have received the admiration and respect which fans and colleagues alike bestow upon this man. Poitier is, indeed, one of our most revered cultural icons. So, when such a figure puts out a book detailing what it was that took him to become the person he is, it is worthwile to read it.
One of the joys in reading this book is its intimate style. Poitier writes in the same inimitable way he speaks, giving a reader the impression of somehow being alone and in conversation with the man as he shares some of his story and much of his wisdom. And what a story it is!
Sidney Poitier recollects the tale of a young West Indian boy who is the son of impoverished tomato farmers. One of many children, he went without most of the things we now take for granted and consider basic and necessary. But, as he tells it, he never thought to be in need of anything back then; rather he remembers this time as nothing other than filled with love and contentment. Such he credits to the hard work and good home provided by his mother and father.
The boy grows into a young man, leaving the Bahamas behind to find his own way initially in Miami and later on in Harlem, ultimately achieving success and celebrity in Hollywood. What he never could leave behind, however, were those lessons learned from his father. Lessons which enabled him to overcome the loneliness and the rising anger of a kid in a new and mostly cold land. According to Poitier, it was the role model provided by his Dad which gave him the strength to confront --and to eventually help diminish-- America's race and class prejudices. Interestingly, Poitier points out the two faces of American racism: The one which is explicitly ugly and in your face, and the softer, more subtle one that is often accompanied with smiles of condescension. The latter he would witness personified in the faces of certain producers, directors, co-stars and those with otherwise impeccable liberal credentials.
Poitier pulls no punches here. Rationalizing nothing away in telling this story. Some things will surprise you, other things will even shock you. For example, the time spent in the US army, and the things he'd done during this brief enlistment, aren't the actions one would expect from the distinguished gentleman we now know and admire. Also he makes no excuses for the troubles and failures of his first marriage, or for the emotional suffering this had caused to his beloved children. Unlike too many of us today, Poitier steps up and accepts the wrongs he has done without exceptions.
This leads to what Poitier found to be the most important lesson he'd learned from his father:
That it is what a man accomplishes in his role as a husband and a father which most clearly defines him. For his Dad --and for Poitier-- this is the true "measure of a man."
I expected more...........2007-06-27
With all the hoopla about this book I expected more. This was pretty mediocre as far as I was concerned.
AWESOME & INSPIRING.......2007-06-27
From the moment I started to listen to this autobiography (audio) I was immediately hooked. It not only gave me an insight into the authors life, his relationship with his parents, his own children and his journey to success. I was inspired and motivated by his tenacity to stand up and be counted against the odds, particularly in era and environment where you are judged not as a Man who is gifted with a talent to inspire others but by the colour of your skin.
Mr Poitier has not only been an inspiration to me, he has helped to pave the way for other African Americans.
Thank you
what adds more weight to the measure of a man---fear, anger, or resignation?.......2007-06-21
I want to start by saying that I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Sidney Poitier as an actor and artist in his industry. He is perhaps one of the greatest living actors of all time. I don't mean Black living actors. I mean one of the most accomplished actors, across the boards (he could be White, Latino, Asian or green with purple stripes, and this would still be my opinion). He received a well-deserved Academy Award, for his role in LILIES OF THE FIELD, high recognition for films including A RAISIN IN THE SUN, PATCH OF BLUE, TO SIR, WITH LOVE, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER. Just one word from Sidney Poitier, and who wouldn't melt?
THE MEASURE OF A MAN: A SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY is exactly what it says it is. It is indeed spiritual and it is Poitier's autobiography, taking an intimate look at his trials, tribulations, joys and accomplishments in the field of acting (both, on stage and screen). Poitier's formative years were spent in the Cat Islands and Nassau, before relocating to Miami, Florida (where he was born, while his parents were en route to the Bahamas) and then took a train to Harlem, New York on a whim. Little did he know that this move would secure his path to acting. As a young boy, Poitier dreamed of going to Hollywood to become [in his words] "a cowboy." He didn't realize, at that tender time, that those cowboys were actually given instruction to learn how to portray those cow ropers, fighting for the honor of young maidens, while kicking aside bad guys and tumbleweeds, in the same breath. I found these early passages fascinating and wonderfully written. Poitier clearly has fond memories of his childhood. Though, he was poor, his parents instilled in him a great sense of dignity and a very strong work ethic. This served him well when looking for work, barely scrapping by as a dishwasher in New York. He endured racial epithets and had to stand tall in the face of great racism and oppression. Yet, he didn't take guff from anyone. In fact, he made a point of outwitting guff at every turn in the road.
The second half of the book, on the other hand, takes a decidedly diifferent turn. A--shall we say--more self-righteous Poitier emerges here. I won't argue that life threw him some very tough obstacles to overcome. His early upbringing in Barbados did not prepare him for the racial inequality he faced in the United States. I don't believe this was something he was ever able to accept. Poitier caused rifts between his White and Black audience members, because, although his characters exuded great dignity, class and eloquence, this was not enough to earn the respect of some of the more radical people who went to see his films. In fact, he came across as "white washed," particularly when Blaxploitation films were surging in popularity (SHAFT and SUPERFLY, to name a couple of examples from this genre). Poitier's characters were men who fought with words, and rarely with their fists, while his raging counterparts were blowing away villains with their pistols. I could feel Poitier's anger for people who mistreated him swell at this point in the book, especially. It's like he was sitting on a cauldron about to boil over with the heat of rage. Poitier's bout with prostate cancer most likely gave him the push he needed to write his life story, with full knowledge that he, too, was mortal and on borrowed time (not unlike everyone else on the planet).
My verdict? Poitier's legacy lives on in his beautiful body of work in film. His book is a very visceral portrait of a man burnt by the very industry that he drew his finest creative expression from. It is at once brutal, unflinching and (at times) ponderous. I leave it up to you to read this and derive your own opinion about this body of work. For me, it could have easily left out the last rambling passage, because it leaned more toward purging. And, though purging (as they say) is good for the soul, there is a fine line between catharsis and collapse.
Sidney -- Applause, Applause!!!.......2007-06-14
I could hardly wait to read The Measure of a Man, as I am a huge fan of Sidney Poitier. It was everything, and more, I had hoped. Sidney is an eloquent and elegant man who chose to turn his life's lessons into his "rock". Stubbed his toes here and there, but used it to further his drive to choose the right path. He never compromised those very basic, solid ethics and morals in life. No sell-outs for this man. It wouldn't hurt us to take a look at our own actions now and then to see how well we're measuring up!

Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. In The Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father. To call the elder Walls's childrearing style laissez faire would be putting it mildly. As Rose Mary and Rex, motivated by whims and paranoia, uprooted their kids time and again, the youngsters (Walls, her brother and two sisters) were left largely to their own devices. But while Rex and Rose Mary firmly believed children learned best from their own mistakes, they themselves never seemed to do so, repeating the same disastrous patterns that eventually landed them on the streets. Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover. --Brangien Davis
Book Description
The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant and charismatic father captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn't want the responsibility of raising a family.
The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.
The Glass Castle is truly astonishing -- a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar, but loyal, family. Jeannette Walls has a story to tell, and tells it brilliantly, without an ounce of self-pity.
Customer Reviews:
A harsh judgement perhaps........2007-07-01
The story starts out as a compelling peek at a dysfunctional family. It soon degenerates into a narrative of poor decisions, repetitive mistakes, and cycles of poverty. This would be interesting if some of the characters actually grew. But no - the adult children in the tale actually aid and abet their parents' unhealthy and criminal behavior (with the possible exception of the son, Brian.) Despite Ms. Wall's (and siblings') prosperity and rise out of destitution, they continue to enable bad behavior in their parents, all under the guise of love.
This was a confusing and preposterous saga of family life run amok. Ms. Walls did not have the good sense to feel embarrassed by her complicity in her parents' downfall.
WOW.......2007-07-01
Couldn't put it down.. for such a dysfunctonal family it is amazing how well the chldren turned out
UNBELIEVABLE!.......2007-06-30
I couldn't put this book down. As soon as I thought she'd gotten to the most outrageous thing these parents of hers could have done, they went and outdid themselves again! I'm amazed that Ms. Walls isn't in 24/7 psychotherapy after her upbringing! (Maybe she is!)
Almost there.........................2007-06-30
I feel compelled to write even though I haven't finished the book! I have been reading 100 pages per night and will probably suffer from withdrawl
at the end. I saw Jeanette Wall on one of the Primetime shows when her book came out and made a mental note..........The other day someone handed the book to me and said you must read it. Today I was even reading the 600 reviews posted! It was like eating peanuts; just one more review. Then I googled Welch, West Va. and you can see an overview of the town. Back to the story. It seemed like early on in school and beyond everyone around them was poor and somewhat neglected thus they did not
stand out as much. As they got older they were probably on the lowest rung. I am wondering what Rex might have achieved with his brilliance if
he had a decent upbringing and drinking didn't get in his way. They say behind every great man there is a woman. He didn[t have a great woman.
I think Rose Mary was always a little wonky as her mother didn't seem that out to lunch. A little mental health might have helped both of them.
A different time a different place. Now back to my chores so I can finish the book tonight and read the rest of the reviews. Since I grew
up in NYC I will never look at a homeless woman the same way again. Each one has a story to tell. Didn't one of Grace Kelley's bridesmaids become a homeless woman. So it can happen to anyone. One of my daughters said many people are one paycheck away from homlessness. So beware and be thankful for whatever we have.
Amazing Story of Human Resilience.......2007-06-29
As a parent and grandparent, one always worries they are doing the right thing, providing the right thing, having a good enough home, and being a good parent (grandparent). I will worry a lot less after reading this book. The story is often hard to read just because of all the horrible things the children go through, but it is also a story of a child's ability to surviveand even thrive. I work with children and I will never look at a child in "poor" conditions again the same. EXCELLENT book to read.

With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.
Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru," suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)
As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"
That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy

The OCD's best friend.......2007-06-27
Being a nerd and more than little obsessive, I find leaving work at work when coming home a difficult challenge. With Allen's methodology I stand a chance when things are hectic and overwhelming at work. I've only been using it for a little while but already I feel less neurotic and more in control. It's simple and that's the beauty of it so give it a go. Even if it isn't for you, it will at least tell you a lot about the clutter that is your life.
God bless GTD!.......2007-06-15
GTD (Getting Things Done) is the martial art of personal productivity management. It teaches you a systematic way to keep projects, tasks, wishes, and "stuff" managed in a universal list system, and off your mind. It leaves you free to devote your full attention to the present moment, knowing that everything you "should be" taking care of is tracked and WILL be taken care of in time. It allows you the flexibility to change your plans when necessary without losing track of your SHOULDS.
I've been using GTD for over 4 years now, and I keep rediscovering its beauty and applicability to new situations. Whenever I feel stressed, or find myself working at less than stellar productivity rates - I find that it's because I've neglected some aspect of the GTD system.
David Allen is an excellent communicator, and his system is bullet proof. If you would only experience the relaxation of a clear mind that GTD offers once, you will swear by this book like I do.
I have purchased gift copies of this book because .......2007-06-14
... so many people struggle with systems that promote productivity. In fact, as a business coach, I teach a program the incorporates some of Allen's ideas. I love the simplicity of parallel physical and digital systems. The cd is useful on long drives, although there are many lists. I strongly encourage you to purchase this book. A Balanced Approach - 4th Edition.......2007-02-10
I purchased this book for a class I took in spring 06 and found it extremly helpful. I've applied the balance approach method in working with young children. I've also applied the information helping my 3 year old learn to read. He is now 4 and enjoys reading. I highly recommend this book.
Great book!!!.......2006-12-27
I found this book to be fantastic!!!! The green pages at the back give many great ideas for teachers of literacy.
Very useful.......2006-03-11
I needed to order this book for a class. It is well written and easy to read. As a reading teacher I can say that I will keep this book as a reference long after the class has ended. This edition comes with a CD (or DVD) which I have not previewed yet, but the instructor of my class raves about it.
A must have!!.......2003-03-08
I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it!
Excellent resource for teachers.......2002-11-17
This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children.

Book Description
In one of the most anticipated books of the year, Lee Woodruff, along with her husband, Bob Woodruff, share their never-before-told story of romance, resilience, and survival following the tragedy that transformed their lives and gripped a nation.
In January 2006, the Woodruffs seemed to have it all–a happy marriage and four beautiful children. Lee was a public relations executive and Bob had just been named co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. Then, while Bob was embedded with the military in Iraq, an improvised explosive device went off near the tank he was riding in. He and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, were hit, and Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him.
In an Instant is the frank and compelling account of how Bob and Lee’s lives came together, were blown apart, and then were miraculously put together again–and how they persevered, with grit but also with humor, through intense trauma and fear. Here are Lee’s heartfelt memories of their courtship, their travels as Bob left a law practice behind and pursued his news career and Lee her freelance business, the glorious births of her children and the challenges of motherhood.
Bob in turn recalls the moment he caught the journalism “bug” while covering Tiananmen Square for CBS News, his love of overseas assignments and his guilt about long separations from his family, and his pride at attaining the brass ring of television news–being chosen to fill the seat of the late Peter Jennings.
And, for the first time, the Woodruffs reveal the agonizing details of Bob’s terrible injuries and his remarkable recovery. We learn that Bob’s return home was not an end to the journey but the first step into a future they have learned not to fear but to be grateful for.
In an Instant is much more than the dual memoir of love and courage. It is an important, wise, and inspiring guide to coping with tragedy–and an extraordinary drama of marriage, family, war, and nation.
A percentage of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury.

In an Instant: A Family's Jouney of Love and Healing.......2007-06-30
What this is, is a journey of Yuppie-fication of a combat trauma. If there was ever a disclosure of modern life with all its benefits and right connections, this is it. "Feeling, oh God, I am feeling...." This is a salute to what the young, privileged adults are living and dealing with ever since graduation into law firms and PR firms, where a job always awaits them, while they move across the country and the globe. Never are we pounding the streets here, reading the want-ads and being unemployed for months at a time with this bunch. Tennis courts and White House dinners, and "Oh, God, for a conversational friend who understands!!" This book is meant for the time machine, and inserted into a capsule to be opened maybe 150 years from now to illustrate this time period, and the network news media. I love some of the quotes to their children who are to be ultimately protected from the real world: "Is Dad in danger??" "No, he is embedded with the US Military!!!" Wow. About the time one has read at least 150 pages into superwoman Lee addressing every twinge of an emotion, this reader is prone to say, "GOOD LORD, do you think all those young widows at Fort Bragg think this way??" C'mon; the Woodruffs got the best medical treatment within the US Military one could get--without wearing a uniform, and thankfully this book will illustrate that fantastic medical technology leap into the future due to our doctors who are in uniform taking care of these IED tragedies that George W. Bush and his band of freaks in the White House have incurred for all time. Just think, he may be out of the Presidency in a short while, but he will get to look at these head trauma victims for the rest of his life. (There is some justice after all.) Like Bob says, walking the halls of Bethesda, some of these guys had no one there at all to help them out. Lonely, without care and compassion, they had to face what he did by themselves--and so will. Make sure the VA gets the funding it will need for a very long time if you care at all after reading this book.
Excellent Book, Very Insightful.......2007-06-27
I purchased this book for my mother for a Mother's Day present and then read it myself. My father is quadriplegic and my mother and I both thought there was more than one instance in this book where she shared our thoughts word for word. A powerful and fascinating read.
An inspiring story about love and determination.......2007-06-13
I was extremely impressed by this book. I followed the news coverage about the injuries ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, sustained in January 2006 while reporting in Iraq, so I was familiar with the severity of Bob's condition. I also knew that he made a remarkable recovery, and I watched the documentary he made for ABC that detailed his experiences in Iraq as well as his time recovering in the hospital and rehabilitation facility. I figured that "In an Instant" would just provide more details that had to be cut out of the TV documentary, but I was wrong. This book is so much more than that.
First of all, Bob only wrote half of this book. The other half was penned by Bob's devoted wife, Lee, who remained vigilant at her husband's side throughout his recovery. In addition to chronicling the circumstances leading up to the explosion in Iraq and the difficulties that Bob faced during his recovery, the book also provides a history of Lee and Bob as a couple. When they first reconnected after college, Bob was a hip young lawyer, but he was soon bit by the journalism bug. Both he and Lee made numerous sacrifices and dragged their family around the world on more than one occasion so that Bob could fulfill his dreams and have a successful career in journalism. The life of a journalist takes a toll on the family, though, and both Lee and Bob discuss the many challenges and personal struggles their marriage faced over the years.
Despite the hardships caused by Bob's career, nothing could prepare this couple for what happened in Iraq in the winter of 2006. The details of what happened to Bob are horrifying, and it's amazing that he's made such great strides in his recovery. "In an Instant" is an inspirational story about how miracles can happen, but it also paints a portrait of an incredibly solid marriage, which is always nice to see.
A gripping tale of a news anchor's recovery.......2007-05-30
Lee and Bob Woodruff were a poster couple for success. However, "in an instant" they became a terrified, grieving wife and a mortally wounded man whose gripping story was played out in a fishbowl of headlines and public sympathy.
Lee was a powerful public relations executive married to a news anchor who had risen in the competitive world of broadcast journalism like a shooting star. His career sometimes put a strain on their marriage, separating him many times and for long periods from Lee and their four children. But the couple's love was durable and overcame a number of obstacles. In his biggest leap up the ladder of achievement, Bob was named co-anchor of ABC's "World News Tonight" with Elizabeth Vargas in December 2005, replacing Peter Jennings.
Bob's star fell and nearly burned out when he was embedded with troops in Iraq barely a month later. His armored vehicle was hit by a nearby improvised explosive device (IED), and he and a cameraman were injured. Bob's head was bwoodruffed by hundreds of rocks of various sizes that broke his skull like a melon, and one large rock lodged in his throat. At the moment of impact, Bob was blessed with a vision of white light and a sense of pervading peace. But soon afterwards he awoke, aware of spitting blood and feeling someone touching his head. He recalled being relieved when he learned that the cameraman was fine.
Then followed the slow and agonizing healing process. IN AN INSTANT is written in tandem by Bob and Lee. We learn that being at the bedside and in the waiting room can be as painful as lying on the operating table. Lee describes feeling grateful that she loved her husband, and praying and working for his recovery. As anyone knows who has ever dealt with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), it's excruciating to watch someone who used to be intelligent and on top of his/her game struggling to remember the word for "bird" or "lettuce." Bob talks about how simple words would float by, but he just couldn't catch them. He had to learn how to speak again, and his balance was affected by the loss of that large section of cranium.
Lee and Bob know how lucky they are. They had many allies and advantages to speed Bob's recuperation. He had cranial reconstruction and every necessary therapy. Above all, he had a caring wife who oversaw his treatments --- though she was often in a private hell of worry.
Seeing soldiers with injuries similar to his own has made Bob crucially aware of how much he has regained and how great the loss can be when the brain is affected. Bob has improved sufficiently so that he now feels like a father and husband again. Though his career is still an open question, he participated in producing a documentary called "To Iraq and Back," which highlights his extraordinary journey and the suffering of soldiers with TBI.

Just to let you know that i have ordered this book a month ago and I'm still haven't receive it !!! Of course they already charged my account. If you really need it just go over to the nearest Borders and buy it,Illustrated Guide to the NEC: Based on the 2005 National Electrical Code at least you will not have this headache waiting for something that may be in your house six months later !!!! I will never buy from this distributor again in my life. I have ordered things two weeks after this one and they are already with me !!!!!
The National Electrical Code 2005.......2007-03-29
This book is the quintessential book for all electricians who work actively in the field. It is almost necessary for all electricians looking to take their journeyman or master electricians test. A new NEC book is released every 3 years making it one of the tools an electrician must buy to keep up on the code changes. It's too bad it's so expensive. If you are considering becoming a licensed electrician you can look forward to shelling out at least $100.00 every three years to renew your license, and about $40.00 every year for licensing fees. But you can make a very good living being an electrician, so don't let the costs scare you away form this great trade.

Requirement for All Electric.......2006-11-10
Not much to say other than bring a highliter when you start reviewing the book. The FEC can get a little confusing, but that is what you can expect from any regulating body or entity.
The softcover is nice, but I can see where a smaller version of the FEC would come in handy. Plus, if you are working in the field with the FEC, a hardbook or looseleaf may suit you better in that you can carry just the sheets you need to the job site. All in All I am happy with AMAZON's price. Best I found for the book/guide. Overstock was more and so was half.com.
Buy the Handbook.......2006-11-07
For experts, the National Electrical Code is the absolute standard for electrical and wiring regulations. For other than experts in the field, the Handbook is a better investment because of the examples, illustrations, and diagrams of different regulations. The index of the National Electrical Code is also incomplete and difficult to use for non experts. Terms, items and topics that are definitely in the Code are not listed in the index. The most complete investment is the Handbook and the CD.
Anyone who does purchase the paperback, standard version should also purchase the tabs.

this is everything i would ask for in a code book. it has details and is very comprehensive. this code book is great for keeping everything up to code.in reality sometimes compromises need to be make for pratical sake, electical inspectors i've dealt with understand that too. sure follow the book to perfectlly in a test exam but in real life something are not going to be happening.
Important Resource.......2007-02-19
Wanting to make internal wiring systems safer is the right thing to do. However, knowing how to meet that goal has never been more difficult. And with internal wiring systems more complex than ever, having a resource that provides correct answers about the NEC rules along with details in a simple explaination, is even more useful. That's exactly what the NEC 2005 Handbook does.
I have used this resource for years and can always count on it to provide answers in a clear and concise manner. The latest Handbook continues to improve with the increased use of illustrations and expanded discussions to help the reader know the NEC rule specifics... while helping in its understanding.
The Handbook is a "must have" reference if you are serious about doing all you can to meet the safety goals of the NEC Rules.

Book Description
Forty years in the making, a new cultural canon that celebrates truth over hypocrisy, literature over totalitarianism.
Echoing Edward Said's belief that "Western humanism is not enough, we need a universal humanism," the renowned critic Clive James presents here his life's work. Containing over one hundred original essays, organized by quotations from A to Z, Cultural Amnesia illuminates, rescues, or occasionally destroys the careers of many of the greatest thinkers, humanists, musicians, artists, and philosophers of the twentieth century. In discussing, among others, Louis Armstrong, Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Franz Kafka, Marcel Proust, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, James writes, "If the humanism that makes civilization civilized is to be preserved into the new century, it will need advocates. These advocates will need a memory, and part of that memory will need to be of an age in which they were not yet alive." Soaring to Montaigne-like heights, Cultural Amnesia is precisely the book to burnish these memories of a Western civilization that James fears is nearly lost. 110 photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Not persuasive at all.......2007-07-01
I expected from the title that this book would provide a canon of people who have contributed to culture and the arts, and explain what these people have done that merits their inclusion in this canon. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The author provides little justification for the people whom he has chosen to include, and does not discuss their contributions in any organized way. It is more a collection of his own private reflections, as though he hadn't intended for it to be read by anyone else at all. I was turned off from the beginning when in the preface he acknowledged that it was sexist to refer to men by their last names and women by their first (but that he was going to do it anyway), and then also by a later comment that such-and-such was a time when it was "prudent" for homosexuals to leave Australia, in a tone that I felt was rather nostalgic for those good old times.
The Opium of the Over-Educated.......2007-06-24
I spent a small fortune having this book flown halfway across the globe so I could read Clive James' insight into the world of arts and history that I, as a "young reader", normally would not be privy to. Now admittedly, I'm not as learned as Mr. James' and I personally can't write a book reciting hundreds of famous and forgotten names of people and text that by their mere mention would make me look like a pseudo-intellectual. I'm just a "young reader" deeply disappointed and a bit alarmed by the praise this man and this book receive.
I guess my biggest problem with "Cultural Amnesia" is that the book itself seems to suffer from lack of direction and purpose. If I'd known the book was merely a collection of ramblings about James' idols of intelligentsia, I could have save myself a fair bit of money.
In some ways, these "necessary memories from history and the arts" are a bit insulting. I can't make any firsthand claims on the greatness of a man like Louis Armstrong, but I feel he's owed more than an essay about how great his rival jazz players, who happened to be white, were. I mean, couldn't James' have said a little something on Armstrong's behalf? Like the fact that the man broke through all sorts of bigoted and racist barriers while being exploited the entire time in order to pursue a career in music and by doing so led the way for other black performers to establish themselves in the industry, versus glorifying Armstrong's mutual admiration of a fellow white jazz musician as the basis for an essay on how great white jazz players are. Out of the six whopping pages dedicated to Armstrong, I believe about a paragraph's worth is actually about the man, the remaining dribble is actually about Benny Goodman.
The rest of the book follows pretty much the same pattern as the Louis Armstrong essay; mention somebody famous, give a brief bio, and then go on to actually talk about some other obscure intelligentsia wet-dream of James'. Mix in at least 20 titles of books in other languages and assume the reader has a clue as to what you're talking about. Use a whole lot of unnecessary verbiage to justify your years of university education and insult everything that isn't left wing, liberal, or "humanist". And pride yourself on your incessant spewing of your vast knowledge of French literature. Or just merely dissect a line of poetry for its use or non-use of a common and rant about how great a book title it would make - he actually does this in his essay about Sir Thomas Brown, instead of talking about Sir Thomas Brown, for a whole seven pages. And Bam!! There you have "Cultural Amnesia" or alternatively known as "I forgot exactly who or what I was writing about".
I had no idea Johnny Rotten.......2007-06-22
was a storm trooper (xvii) or that Trotsky matters only to people who have maxed out their credit cards (748). A fascinating look at egomania, James is able to sprinkle bits of cultural effluvia between mountains of self promotion. He has no arguments but many pronouncements, the main one being that our current system of globalizaton and economic disparity is the best possible way to organize the human species, and we must preserve that system through reflecting on people whom that very same system has thrown on the cultural rubbish heap. This forces James to make Thatcher, among others, a good guy, which might make you, dear reader, throw the book across the room. James' idea of art seems to have stalled around 1956, he out-twaddles French theory and hilariously self-destructs whenever he tries his hand at humor. Well, we all make mistakes. We just usually don't make them in books of this heft. I give the book one star for James' appreciation of Ashley Judd, who really is a fine actress.
The Mentor I never had.......2007-06-10
For me Clive James became the Humanist mentor I never had until I began to read Cultural Amnesia. A kind and gentle, superbly qualified teacher with a gift for using the English language to open new windows on my world. I have had five wonderful visits thus far with Clive James of four hours each reading the entire work. I am a far richer man for investing in the book not only my money but my time. His forty years at this labor of love is not lost
as long as honorable men seek truth through the written word.
Close, but no cigar........2007-06-01
This book is filled with people well worth knowing about. Most are literary folks and some are `personalities' in the best sense of the word. The majority are urbane and literate. The author, Clive James, is very erudite and sophisticated. Yet in the end this book is disappointing. Why should this be the case?
Perhaps it is because James is a bit too taken with his own erudition. This comes through in many of the essays in this book and is sometimes quite annoying. Then there is the simple fact that most of the essays are far too short to really develop their admittedly fascinating subjects. Of those subjects whose writings this reviewer is familiar with such as Albert Camus and Marcel Proust, both were treated in a rather superficial and not terribly original way. In the essay on Edward Gibbon, James treats one of the most monumental historical works in the English language as a literary exercise and fails to note how much fun Gibbon obviously had in writing it. In his essay about the existentialist philosophy of Jean Paul Sartre, he fails to note that Sartre the novelist provided a far more authentic (so to speak) rationale for existentialism than Sartre the philosopher. James may have gone astray by trying to tackle complex individuals too succinctly to do either them or James justice.
Yet James also produced a very sensitive and well crafted essay on F. Scott Fitzgerald which surely adds new dimension to that subject's character. His work on Thomas Mann was also well crafted and original. Interestingly, both are substantially longer than most of the essays in this book. In the end when he is good James is very good, but when he is bad he is indeed horrid much like the cliché which he must abhor.

$67 for a paperback book is highway roberry.
Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.
This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.
Here is what counts.......2000-08-24
I am an affectionate critic of "Legacies," as both editors were teachers of mine and many of the contributors were co-teachers with me in the mid-1990s. Regardless, I used the book for several years and the results speak volumes.
This is a college literature/composition reader that tries to do it all -- and succeeds. For its hefty heft, one must acknowledge that each lesson plan (day-to-day lesson plans handed happily to you by real teachers, talented teachers) belongs here. I used many of them before they were "lesson plans" -- they engage and involve students.
Whether you are a reader/student simply looking for a great resource of singular texts or a college literature professor/adjunct composition instructor searching for sure-fire ways of directing your students away from the window and towards what counts -- "Legacies" is the book.

I looked all over for this type of book only to find that the price was out of our range. Then I went to faithful old Amazon.com. Need I say more.
