    Book Description

The Surrealists endlessly manipulated and fetishized the body—especially the female body. The emerging mechanics of fashion promotion ensured that this new vision of the body was widely seen as the fashion magazine played an innovative role in promoting a new and often highly eroticized femininity. From the extraordinary jewelry of Salvador Dalí to the collections of Elsa Schiaparelli and Meret Oppenheim, The Surreal Body is a stunningly illustrated look at mind-bending Surrealist fashion and adornment.

      Book Description

Surrealism remains a great inspiration for the fashion world. Designers embraced the ideals and aesthetics of such creative geniuses as Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Rene Magritte and Man Ray. With fun, amusing and extraordinary creations, they quickly began to unstitch the institutionalized notions of fashion, adding imagination, color and scandal to this ancient trade. Fashion & Surrealism is a testament to the fruitful infatuation that fashion has had with Surrealism, an infatuation that is still very visible in the works of contemporary designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier and Serge Lutens.

I didn't know much about Oppenheim before reading this book. But after exploring these pages I developed a fondness for her creative thinking. Oppenheim had a certain flare for novelty that many creative people seem to lack. You'll see exactly what I mean when you check out the various photos of some of her wild ideas (like a belt made out of arms - so it looks like someone has their arms around you). It was great to see so many artistic possibilities that I never would have considered. The book is very well written and gave enough information for me to feel as if I've learned something valuable about this artist. For any person who truly loves to explore creative possibilities I recommend this book.

From the author: John Ashbery's poetry has been the subject of numerous studies that established loose connections between his work and surrealism, often without resorting to close analysis of specific texts. In this essay I study Ashbery's surrealism with special attention to his adoption of metaphysical imagery from the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico. While I track the recurrence of this imagery throughout several of Ashbery's books, the main aim of this essay is to provide a new perspective on a stylistic lineage that stretches back to Parmigianino and reaches Ashbery via de Chirico. Rather than a collection of purely formal features, what links these three artists is a tension that lies "in the concept / Rather than its realization"--using Ashbery's own characterization of Parmigianino's painting.

You can look forward to the publication of "In a Surreal Fashion: The Creative Collaboration between Schiaparelli and Dali" by Robyn Gibson in January 2003 (Berg Publishers). I know I am!

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2000-07-25

This book explores the relationship between fashion and the surrealism art movement. It includes gorgeous photos and interesting text. I was especially interested in the section of Dali's works and Schiaparelli's designs, showing how the two influenced one another. Fashion can be and should be fun, and this lovely coffee table book demonstrates how this can be achieved. Truly a beautiful work.
