Dolce & Gabbana Fashion Album.......2007-06-08
There are few books in which every page is a work of art in itself. This fashion album is such a book. Everyone should experience the artistry of each photographer and his subject. Awesome work!
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.......2007-03-01
The volume is fantastic in a number of ways: it's not a chronological compendium of photographs which is a plus in my opinion. Photos are arranged by photographer, which gives well deserved credit to those who bring fabulous images to life. I also like the fact that each photograph is captioned with the name of the publication, month and year, and the model's name. It gives the ladies credit, and reminds us of the fleeting nature of their work. Linda and the rest of the ueber-models don't need a caption, we all know who they are, but so many of the other ones have come and gone :) Be prepared to see about a 50/50 mix of color and BW photography. And enjoy photos from major European magazines, some of which select styles and types of photos that one may not find in the US. It's not just nudity, but a certain flair that is so european.
In sum - get this wonderful book, it's well worth it.
P.S. It weighs a ton, so don't lift the package too swiftly when it arrives at your door :)

Book Description
Sarah Kramer is a vegan cooking superstar. Her first two books, How It All Vegan! and The Garden of Vegan, co-authored with Tanya Barnard, have sold well over 100,000 copies; How It All Vegan! won the Veggie Award for favorite cookbook of 2004 by VegNews magazine, and Herbivore magazine, in a cover story on Sarah, called her "The World's Coolest Vegan."
Sarah returns with her first solo cookbook, featuring more of the delectable, easy-to-prepare recipes that vegans around the world have come to adore. For Sarah, vegan cooking-which eschews all animal products, including butter, milk, and cheese-can be an adventure in dining, without a lot of investment in time or money. In fact, most of the recipes in La Dolce Vegan! can be prepared in 20 to 30 minutes or less. From soups and salads to entrees and desserts, they are sure to inspire both committed and part-time vegans alike.
At the heart of the book is Sarah's wholehearted commitment to the vegan lifestyle that has changed her life completely-from a childhood plagued with health problems to an adulthood filled with the pleasures and joys of living vegan. For Sarah, an animal-free diet will make you happier, healthier, and more content with the world around you.
In addition to the wonderful recipes, there is a fun do-it-yourself section of vegan tips and non-food items. Learn to live the sweet life of veganism and you'll never look back!
Recipes include: Beauty and the Beet Borscht, Mocked Clam Chowder, Roasted Cherry Tomato Pasta, Sloppy Janes, Blessed Broccoli Stir-Fry, Apple Pie Pancakes, Carob Almond Truffles, and Tomato Soup Cake.
Sarah Kramer is the co-author of How It All Vegan! and The Garden of Vegan. She lives in Victoria, British Columbia, with her husband, where she manages a tattoo shop in addition to creating her vegan masterpieces and maintaining her popular website www.GoVegan.net.
Customer Reviews:
My good 'ol standby cookbook, when I'm in a hurry.......2007-04-02
This is it! The good 'ol standby when you know time is of the essence and you have to have dinner fast. I would compare this to the "Betty Crocker" in the typical diet world. You know you can turn to it and find a recipe and have dinner on the table in no time. There is a great mix of recipes, but I have to admit I really love her dessert recipes the best. I have taken some cookies to friends and they have commented on how good they were and even asked for the recipe. I explained that they are from a Vegan cookbook, but they didn't care. Unfortunately there are no pictures in this book (if that is something that you must have) but it hasn't stopped me and she hasn't written all of these recipes. Many are credited to other people and not everything is original -- you can find similar things on the internet. All in all a decent book to turn to when you are in a hurry and have some general ingredients on hand.
A great book for beginning vegans.......2007-03-17
Not sure exactly where the recent negative feedback is coming from on this book. I've been vegan for over ten years now. When my omnivorous guy and I got engaged, my mother-in-law didn't know anything about veganism or vegan cooking but was incredibly open to it--she thought it was an interesting new culinary challenge (yup, I lucked out in MIL department). This was one of two cookbooks she got.
Let me tell you, the recipes out of this book are AMAZING. They are very easy--anything that requires over 30 min of prep time is marked with a little clock, and the ingredients are very accessible. My MIL, with minimal experience cooking vegan, has made incredible feasts with this book.
For example, not only did she use it for holidays (Thanksgiving & Christmas); this cookbook was also the basis for a vegan-friendly bachelor party on the request of one of my fiancee's friends--all with fantastic results. Friends of ours have asked for the recipe to the fantastic chocolate frosting that for once isn't made out of chocolate chips, and the cake (a depression-era crazy cake with tofu that even my tofu-phobic brothers enjoyed and asked for more) to go with it. Just a moment ago, I finished a lunch of leftover fantastic peanutty soup that I made from a recipe in this book. I think we've found one recipe in the book that didn't really work well (a pie crust recipe), but everything else we've tried so far has been GREAT. In fact, MIL loaned us the book, and I am hard-pressed to give it back any time soon :)
Some recipes make a lot of food, but I like Sarah's idea of just inviting over friends for a dinner party to use it up, or I just freeze/chill it and eat it for lunch at work. I especially appreciate Sarah creating recipes that use whole cans of ingredients. Recipes that require half the can, leaving you to strategize using it up or leaving it to rot forgotten in the back of the fridge, drive me crazy.
I also appreciate that Kramer is very down-to-earth and not preachy--being vegan is at least as much about celebrating fantastic food as it is making a political point.
Sorry to gush. Yes, the recipes are easy, and sometimes, yes, they could be things that you might come up on your own. But for those of us with "cook's block", or those new to vegan cooking, this is a very good start.
Nice try. .......2007-02-26
So you know how the internet is chock full of weird recipes by everyone and their grandmother involving ketchup and mustard as the main seasoning ingredients and how most of it tastes only palatable?
Well, sadly, that's this cookbook in a nutshell.
I've tried six of these recipes and they all failed to pass muster in much the same way unrated recipes off the internet tend to. This doesn't surprise me too much since most of the recipes are actually recipes sent to the author by her fans and her friends. A nice thought but she really should have done some serious culinary editing. If a free recipe I've jacked from some website bombs I just shrug my shoulders - I should have known better. If a recipe from a cookbook I've payed about 20 bucks for bombs I get a little tetchy.
Sometimes people don't like a vegan or vegetarian recipe because they've never eaten tofu before or think that tahini is the misspelled name of a pacific island and why is it being called for in this recipe?! Sometimes people just aren't used to the way carob chips taste and get testy when they were expecting them to taste EXACTLY like chocolate chips. This is not my problem. I've been vegetarian for 12 years, vegan for 1 year, I grew up in a hippie household eating health food and I've been cooking for myself since I was ten.
I feel sad about having to write such an unfavorable review. Sarah seems like someone I would really like and the book does have a section of fun vegan stuff (plus cute retro pics of Sarah) that aren't without merit. However since her book is marketed as a COOKbook and not a neat-vegan-stuff book I feel obligated to warn other not terribly wealthy vegans to save their cash. If you want to know how to make a vinyl cuff that says vegan on it or think pictures of Sarah Kramer being silly are worth 15 dollars than go for it. If you want delicious vegan recipes look elsewhere.
Skip this book........2007-02-12
As an enthusiastic fan of How it all Vegan and Garden of Vegan, I'm sorry to say I was very dissapointed with this book. La Dolce Vegan is overloaded with stirfrys and other simple recipes you could pretty much figure out for yourself. There are also a lot redundant recipes for the same dish, and just silly fluff like chocolate-covered pretzels that nobody needs a cookbook to make. There may some gems in this book, but they get lost in a sea of what seems to be filler.
Also, I would have to agree that it is pretty onboxious that there are more pictures of Sarah Kramer being cute and quirky than there are pictures of the actual food, especially since many of the recipes are credited to other people.
I was once told that a cookbook is a good purchase if you find just a handful of recipes that you enjoy enough to start making regularly, but I didn't find any such recipes with this book. I didn't even pick up any useful cooking tips. Pick up the first two books from this author if you like, but skip this one.
New Vegan and love this book!.......2007-02-08
I just became vegan recently and this book is truly fab! Now I'll never miss my old dishes....sooo many yummy, versatile recipes in this book, as well as vegan versions of classics ("meat" loaf, carrot cake, etc)Most require little time or very many ingredients and there are so many helpful basic cooking tips (vegan or otherwise)
The author has a charming and amusing writing style and this book makes you feel like you have a great friend in the kitchen. Her enthusiasm and passion for veganism is a wonderful inspiration!

20 Years of Dolce & Gabbana is a collection of memories and iconic images that mark each step of their evolution. The book features images from photographers such as Steven Meisel, among others and models of the likes of Gisele, Linda Evangelista, and others.
Customer Reviews:
Behind the concept curtain.......2006-08-24
I'm reviewing this book not as a fan of Dolce Gabbana, which I am, but as a photographer who loves their ad campagians, especially those of the past decade. WOW. Unlike the movie business, not a lot of behind the scenes stories are written about the production of the biggest fashion ad campagians with the top photographers. I was surprised to find that Steve Misel shot most of their recent ones. More than that it is great to see the drawings for how they were developed and what the thought process was. PLUS the Photos, which looked amazing in teh magazine really shine when printed on high quality paper. A great book, but a bit pricey unless you find a killer deal on a used copy, which I did.
Kevin
All I can say is 'Wow.'.......2006-06-30
I did not think that anyone could put together such an amazing book. The book starts off with the spring/summer collection of 1986. It features runway photos and describes every season. The photos include advertisements, editorials and runway photos. The quality of the pictures are amazing! There is a page dedicated to every season where Domenico and Stefano are interviewed and they describe the theme of the season.
There is one big flaw that really makes the reading of the seasons terrible. The author misspelled words and then just crossed them out and kept it in the text. There is also underlined text and even whole sentences that are circled. This makes reading about every season difficult because the sentences do not flow.
Please get this book. The price is worth it and you'll love all the beautiful pictures.

Touring Italy.......2005-05-02
Instead of reserving this book to a coffee table, read it, enjoy it and see what Italy has to offer. Now that your interest has been sparked, travel to the places in Italy that are featured in this book.
O To Live In Italy!.......2004-11-07
Catherine Fairweather has honed her skills as a writer from her days as a contributing editor to House and Garden and here joins forces with photographer Mark Luscombe-Whyte to present a volume of life in Italy that not only makes for a beautiful and informative book, it makes the reader long for the pleasures of living in what surely is the world's most romantic country.
Separated into chapters - Grand Style: classic villas and country estates; Bohemian Chic: rural and island retreats (Tuscany, Lazio, Puglia); Urban Elegance: city apartments and townhouses (Milan, Rome, Venice) - Fairweather enters private homes of the rich and famous and describes how the regions and the atmosphere dictate the home's ambience. The photographs are gorgeous: full views of each home entered as well as separate views of rooms and bibelots, both inside the home and from the garden make us feel as though we have at least spent a full day in each location.
For a coffee table tour of the places rarely seen in Italy, this book is as fine as they come. Other volumes may offer more sophisticated history and cultural input, but Fairweather and Luscombe-Whyte take the personal approach - and that works very well! Grady Harp, November 2004

The title of Living, Studying and Working in Italy says it all: this book is intended for would-be expatriates with an eye for Italy. The authors have both had extensive experience living and working in the Bel Paese--Neighbor was in Florence for four years while Larner still lives in Rome, where she is a journalist for Business Week. Together they have pooled their experiences and collective knowledge of living abroad to address the practical side of living, working, or studying in Italy.
The first thing you might notice about this book is that it lacks references to Italy's great art, popular tourist sites, and best hotels. But remember, this is no ordinary guidebook--leave the tourist stuff to others and let Neighbor and Larner take you on a tour of everyday life as an expatriate in Italy. Here you'll find information about taking language courses and teaching English, volunteering for archeological digs, and starting a business. There are plenty of practical tips about visas, banking, residency requirements, and--alas!--taxes. There are lists of language schools, volunteer opportunities, and internship programs as well as information about freelance, part-time, and full-time employment opportunities. In short, this guidebook extraordinaire might just be an expatriate's best friend in Italy.
Book Description
So, you want to move to Italy for six months but you don't speak the language well. How do you look for a job? Your heart is set on buying a farmhouse in Tuscany. What are the legal pitfalls to avoid? You'd like to study in Rome, but your college doesn't have a program. Which schools should you apply to? With all-new information on the Internet and on the effect of the conversion to the euro, this essential companion guide to Italy features - hundreds of addresses and Internet sites, from real estate agencies to job banks - details on visas, banking, taxes, and residency permits - freelance, seasonal, part-time, and full-time employment options - more than two hundred language schools, American colleges, and Italian universities Written by two seasoned expatriates, Living, Studying, and Working in Italy is packed with candid insider's tips and practical, up-to-date information for travelers of any age.
Customer Reviews:
Only Brushes the Surface.......2007-06-02
I moved to Italy to live, study and work, taking with me this book as the ultimate resource for an American looking to make a life there. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be the exhaustive guide I had hoped.
Not only did it brush the surface on important questions any American moving abroad would have (such as those addressing legal requirements, getting proper paperwork and visas to stay, finding work, etc.), I found it to actually contradict itself in the discussion of some important subjects.
I am afraid that whole-heartedly trusting this book to help you navigate through some of the legal implications of moving to Italy may result in much frustration. I also found the helpful lists (compilations of schools and universities, English-speaking organizations, etc.) to be less-than-comprehensive. These lists mainly focus on the big cities and American-draws (Rome, Florence and Milan).
This book is fine as a starter guide to help you to begin to plan, but it is not "everything you need to know."
The Guru.......2007-04-19
This book arrived today, and I have read most of it already-- absolutely wonderful! It addresses answers to 98% of my questions, as well as issues I hadn't even thought about. There are also useful addresses and resources, as well as basic, but necessary tips, including how to convert measurements (for butter, sugar and clothing!), saints' days, and everyday etiquette (don't walk around your hosts' house barefoot!). How can someone who doesn't speak much Italian find a job? Which visa is actually right for you and what's the process? How do you prepare for your Italian job interview/write your resume? What's the garbage tax? What if you need emergency medical care? How do you get covered by Italy's public health care system? What is the proper way to go shopping in Italy? I've spent several months living/studying/traveling in Europe before, and I wish I had access to this book earlier. Full of tips, tricks, and tools to make you a successful individual in Italy (and beyond). Go eat some pasta and read up!
Italy made easy.......2006-01-30
To those who are either considering moving to Italy or just going for vacation, this is the book for you. It provides not only the basic information, but also answers questions that you would not normally consider or even think of. It also provides valuable information about embassies/consulates, education, and every day life. Even as a seasoned traveler, I found this book very useful, as I plan my relocation to Italy. It is an asset to any traveler's library.
Very thorough and helpful.......2004-12-17
This book is great because it gives you things from an American perspective. I've lived in Italy before on a study abroad program, so I was familiar with some things, but the lists of contact information alone are enough reason to buy this book. It covers everything from student visas to getting dual citizenship and from teaching ESL to starting your own business. A must read for anyone thinking about moving to Italy.
What great ideas! Maybe I won't be homeless after all..........2003-07-25
This book is literally a goldmine of useful information. I had no idea that the university system began at different times then the university system in the States... no wonder I didn't meet any cute Italian boys until two months into my stay! Hehe. But beyond that, I would recommend this book to anyone who, like myself, dreams of one day calling Italia home. I went through some of the avenues listed in the book (i.e., post-graduate study abroad, mingling with the locals, etc.) before even knowing this book existed, so the authors must be doing something right!

Book Description
Basic Cooking and Baskic Baking served as solid foundations for learning how to cook and bake. Now, even more enjoyment, fun, and knowledge about trendy and classic cooking is possible. Italy epitomizes vivaciousness--la dolce vita--and its cooking is probably the best-loved national cuisine in the world. The first section of this book offers basic how-to's on shopping for key ingredients (like pasta, cheese, balsamic vinegar, espresso, and wine), explains these necessaries, and lists Italian souvenirs that will infuse any home with "that Italian feeling." The recipe section is divided into starters, snacks and salads, pasta, risotto, pizza and polenta, soups and vegetables, fish and meat, and dolci. But this is not a simple collection of ethnic recipes; it is a new approach to Italian cooking and an eclectic group of meals that will well serve any party or gathering, big or small.

This book delivers what it title implies. After a description of the basics you will need for making Italian food, it takes you through recipes by main ingredient.
The food is basic, the recipes are not too complicated, and the ingredients are easy to find in any standard store. My only complaint, albeit minor, is that the instructions are a little too detailed at times. This gets in the way once you figure out what they mean in the description, but ensure that your meal comes together at the same time.
Easy to follow.......2003-10-04
This is a wonderful introduction to Italian cooking. The meals are authentic, and recipes easy to follow. This is a must have for simple Italian cooking, and this comes from someone who lived in Italy for 5 years.

The First English Language Study of the Giallo.......2007-05-18
Mikel J. Koven's academic study of the Italian genre known as giallo is destined to become an important part of the discourse surrounding this much maligned culturally specific form. This book is the first of its kind, an English language study which takes a broad approach to the genre, and doesn't just centre in on a few exceptional directors and films. The first few chapters are the most interesting and add to the debate around popular European cinema and the possible reasons for its dismissal and marginalisation. Koven proposes the term 'vernacular cinema' rather than popular, and argues that giallo films were constructed formally and thematically for a working class rural audience. Therefore the language of these films is one that is formed by and recognisable too a certain type of audience in Italy. An audience which would have both a fascination and ambivalence toward the chic cosmopolitan modernity represented by these films. Koven further argues this was a distracted and unfocused audience, hence the giallo's reliance on punctuating dull narrative exposition with graphic and violent set pieces. I would suggest that it is in Koven's discussion of the reception and consumption of giallo that holds the greatest interest. The remainder of the book is a broad, but extremely well written exploration of the formal and thematic conventions of giallo, for die hard fans of these films this will seem familiar, but its very nice having it written down in academic terms for future reference. Koven's discussion of the set piece is also noteworthy, in that he suggests the set piece, which seems to continue long after its narrative justification, is very close to Pasolin's concept of poetic cinema. It is hard to argue for these films in the terms of art cinema, but Koven pulls it off. This is certainly not the last word on giallo within academic terms of reference, but it is an excellent starting point and will become a crucial book for students of popular European cinematic forms.

Book Description
The allure of postwar Italy continues to seduce and captivate us, and now our love affair is rekindled through these remarkable and candid photos of stars whose timeless glamour endures: Audrey Hepburn with her hairstylist; Anna Magnani hailing a cab in Rome; Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini on Capri. The Italy of the 1950s and '60s was a time of high style that bedazzled Americans and ignited a love of all things Italian, particularly film and fashion. Through these unabashed portraits of the cult of celebrity we can revisit an Italy that was sensuous yet innocent, simple yet courageous, cosmopolitan yet insulated. This book is both a visually stunning tribute to larger-than-life personas and a unique reminiscence of a time when being bold and outrageous was to be at the height of fashion. With more than 130 lovingly executed duotone separations, Dolce Italia celebrates la dolce vita and allows us to relive this stylish era anew.
